Justine stands up for FWR in The Times

Justine is quoted in The Times today saying that TRAs are pressuring advertisers to withdraw from the site but they’re willing to take the hit to keep the discussion open. It’s very heartening after the threads of the last few days re FWR being hidden and the worries about this space being censored.

Flowers to @JustineMumsnet - thank you.

@DawnMumsnet Indeed, here's to civil debate Gin

When they go low, we go high. #TGLWGH

And thank you.

Newsofas · 15/04/2018 11:51

Fantastic Mumsnet. I feel quite emotional. Power to women. We will not be silenced by anyone. We are major consumers. We are over 50% of the population. Financially no company can afford to fall out with women.

*someone upthread asked what this means - Michelle Obama said it first:

whitehandledkitchenknife · 15/04/2018 11:58

Women are wonderful.
Thank you Mumsnet Flowers

LefkosiaTigers · 15/04/2018 11:59

It was me asking, BoreofWhabylon, thank you.

FencingFightingTorture35 · 15/04/2018 12:03

Thank you Justine. It is brave when anyone takes this kind of stance publically. I hope you and your family don't get targeted as a result of speaking out.

It matters so much to me that we have this space. I don't feel I have any particular voice in life as someone with a disability but that changes when I come here because the media and politicians do care about what we're saying. I fundamentally believe that the demands gender critical women are making are reasonable. It's quite frightening when you think how few other places we can speak openly despite that fact.

PencilsInSpace · 15/04/2018 12:04

Thank you! Flowers

From the Times Article:

"Justine Roberts said she had been approached by three significant advertisers who had been threatened by trans groups.

“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said."

Justine - perhaps you could tell these advertisers that if they wish to go public about this, they will be find that many grateful women will support their not bowing to demands to stifle the free speech of women.

Also, these Trans Groups should have their feet held to the fire for this sort of bullying

Winewinewinegin · 15/04/2018 12:23

Another way of mumsnetters showing tangible support would be to click on adverts of interest when visiting this board (and mumsnet in general).

Thank you Justine 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻
Some brilliant replies on twitter regarding this

Thanks mumsnet. You are the best ♥️

cornflakegirl · 15/04/2018 13:40

Thank you Justine.

TurningWood · 15/04/2018 13:40

We are all in danger of bending to the TRA right-wing ideology of loving capitalism. I am not buying any more than I need as an answer to bullying by a group of toddler men.

Merchfach · 15/04/2018 13:41

I have signed up in the last few weeks just to support this issue.

All thanks to Justine and the MS team for enabling and continuing to support the debate. Dread to think how much more difficult the fightback would have been without you.

Tell me which advertisers have stood firm in the face of TRA attempts to get them to withdraw and I will support them and tell everyone I know why. Women have money and women do pay attention to the ethicals of the companies they purchase from. Any company revealed as having boycotted Mumsnet over this issue had better watch out!

HairyBallTheorem · 15/04/2018 13:54

Thank you Justine and Mumsnet.

And for any advertisers following this thread, I'm another one who checks out review threads here for suggestions on products, and I'm another one who will boycott any firm attempting to silence women's voices.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 15/04/2018 14:00

I basically don't buy anything any more without first checking what mumsnetters think of it.

Will also withdraw my custom from any company who withdraws advertising from mumsnet over this issue.

Thank you Justine and mn! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

And we can add the SNP to the boycott list!

Ekphrasis · 15/04/2018 14:08

Thank you Justine ThanksCakeGinWineWineWine

And great cartoon @SandyDrawsBadly!

(Which steam mop is it mentioned on the Sandy Twitter thread; I really need one...)

OlennasWimple · 15/04/2018 14:21

This is brilliant news, thank you Justine, Dawn and all the mighty women of MN

dorothyparka · 15/04/2018 14:27

Thank you MNHQFlowers

SwearyG · 15/04/2018 14:31

Mumsnet is getting a bit of a pasting on twitter from the TRA usual suspects. Can we all post why we #lovemumsnet - whether it's generic or a personal anecdote and get a whole load of love going?

I was so ill a few years ago and MN meant I could interact with the world when I couldn't leave the house and the bright, wonderful women on here kept challenging what my crazy brain was telling me and literally kept me alive. I'm not the only woman still here because of MN (I remember the woman with the "heavy period" that turned out to be sepsis). Let's celebrate the good!

I was feeling quite depressed yesterday. Saw this news in the middle of the night - today I feel buoyant.

Thank you so much Justine, and MNHQ. It means a lot that in the face of everything going on, you've stood firm for WOMEN.
