In The Times today:

He is uneasy about some aspects of the transgender rights debate.

‘If you have people who have no intention of changing sex but think it would be fun to go into the women’s changing room, we cannot ignore that.’

did someone say strange bedfellows?

Mumsnut · 02/04/2018 13:17

I bet you could share a sleeper compartment with Moggy and be safe, actually.

Hooray for J Rees Mogg I say!

Sadly, I think he may be coming from a place of bigotry, rather than feminism...

I do agree with him though, obviously. I just think we need to be careful with allies like him.

SophoclesTheFox · 02/04/2018 13:22

Bloody hell, it is strange times indeed when Rees Mogg can say something that doesn't make me instantly tense up with rage Shock

yikesanotherbooboo · 02/04/2018 13:25

Hilarious! My old fashioned right-on thinking mind is blown!

theuntameableshrew · 02/04/2018 13:28

I agree with you Trumpdump

Badbilly · 02/04/2018 13:28

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend"

DullAndOld · 02/04/2018 13:32

" coming from a place of bigotry "

oh so if this thinking isn't 'correct' then we should ignore him, is that it?

I say let's raise a toast to the old bigot for stating the truth, unlike most others.

Bluetoo1 · 02/04/2018 13:34

I’m pretty impressed. No other mp dares even comment.

SeaWitchly · 02/04/2018 13:36

Yes, this is the first thing J RM has reportedly said which hasn’t made me furious or want to vomit, sometimes simultaneously.
Still holding on to my Labour Party membership for now...

Ereshkigal · 02/04/2018 13:36

Yes, I will raise a toast to anyone who states the truth about this because it is an act of bravery in these times. It doesn't mean I agree with them on anything else.

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 02/04/2018 13:37

I think this is some of the problem with POMO thinking - I don't judge an opinion based on who's giving it (although obviously I do take the source into account when thinking about reliability), but on its own merits.

If someone I dislike tells me that something is shit, they might still be right, if someone I love says something's fantastic, they might still be wrong.

DullAndOld · 02/04/2018 13:38

what is POMO?

terryleather · 02/04/2018 13:41

It's short for Postmodern DullAndOld

DullAndOld · 02/04/2018 13:43

oh God, really? Grin OK.

spontaneousgiventime · 02/04/2018 13:46

This doesn't surprise me. JRM holds very traditional Conservative views. The good thing about him putting his head above the parapet is he holds a respected view in the Tory party. I don't agree with him on many of his opinions, I do on this and am thankful he has spoken out.

TerranceandPhilip · 02/04/2018 13:48

Because the two are usually mutually exclusive....Smile

SadAboutTheBoy · 02/04/2018 13:51

I know he's not everyone's cup of tea, but he is actually quite sensible about a lot of things.
I was impressed when his speech was stopped by protesters and he went to chat and engage with him - it showed them up for the idiots they were when they couldn't articulate what they were even protesting about!

The good thing about this quote about the transgender rights issue is that he sums it up in a way everyone can understand. I was talking to DH about this today and he had no idea that self ID was even being debated!

puckingfixies · 02/04/2018 13:55

Well said JRM, and I don't think this sounds bigoted - he sounds like he is concerned about safeguarding.

DullAndOld · 02/04/2018 13:57

just because somebody is 'right wing' it doesn't mean that everything controversial that they say is 'bigoted'.

If that is what you think, then maybe he is not the one who is 'bigoted'.

He is just stating fact, and fair play to him.

AngryAttackKittens · 02/04/2018 13:58

Agreed. If he also said that fire is hot, would people go stick their hands in one just to prove him wrong?

SophoclesTheFox · 02/04/2018 13:59

Because the two are usually mutually exclusive

yes, they are Smile

Rees Mogg and I come at this from radically different perspectives - he believes that the drive to eradicate sex segregation is troubling because women and girls are to be protected (because of notions of property and propriety), and I believe it is troubling because women have the right to boundaries and privacy. Completely different worldviews.

DullAndOld · 02/04/2018 14:01

" he believes that the drive to eradicate sex segregation is troubling because women and girls are to be protected (because of notions of property and propriety), "

oh right, when did you discuss this with him then? You seem to know a lot about what he thinks..
