Whoop!

I'm pretty sure Hadley's here Wink

Yeah, the bit about transwomen and women negotiating jarred. It starts from the assumption that gender non conforming men are our problem. Still good though.

GoodyMog · 31/03/2018 09:44

Good article, generally, but I am not an "other woman" as she says towards the end.

Agreed. However it's the Guardian so she probably had to fight to be allowed not to write "cis" or "women (and that includes transwomen)"

LizzieSiddal · 31/03/2018 09:44

What a brilliant artice. Thank you Hadley. Flowers

We need more of this stuff!!

AverageSnowflake · 31/03/2018 09:45

Brilliant article! Thank you Hadley.

RJnomore1 · 31/03/2018 09:45

I agree it's tempered to get published and get the message across to a wide group of people. It's not about the trans debate - it's about the marginalisation and silencing of women.

GarlicCheeseBread · 31/03/2018 09:46

De-lurking to say well done Hadley!

Judder · 31/03/2018 09:46

Thank you Hadley, you are the bees knees

dangermouseisace · 31/03/2018 09:46

I love Hadley. Her piece on Corbyn the other day was fabulous too.

53rdWay · 31/03/2018 09:47

Thank you Hadley!

Because none of this is about making feminism inclusive; it’s about policing the way women talk about their lives.

Say it loud, say it proud.

Floisme · 31/03/2018 09:47

That is so fab and has made me ridiculously happy. I've been a fan of Hadley Freeman since she was on the Guardian fashion desk and it's been great watching her over the last 10 years or so. I just love the way she can switch from writing about mullets to anti-Semitism in the Labour Party to 80s films to miscarriage to this, all without breaking sweat.

She's been gender critical for a while now on Twitter but this is the first thing I've seen her take the gloves off.

Hadley if you're lurking Wine You've had quite a week.

Tackytriceratops · 31/03/2018 09:47

failing to make the fairly crucial point that "transwomen" these days are largely cross-dressers rather than men with gender dysphoria.

I think that's where it's clever - in that it would have been a step too far - and yes probably had to be skirted around. Or was disallowed.

If anyone follows links they could begin to work this out.

Brilliant! Good on Hadley!

Flooffloof · 31/03/2018 09:48

Yesssss, brilliant.
I am sure we can all pick holes in each sentence but I will always think it's amazing it's in the guardian.
It's better than a lot of other articles, and quite succinct.
Hadley day forever more

BamALamA · 31/03/2018 09:49

I love Hadley Freeman. The abuse she gets on Twitter for daring to have an opinion is horrendous but she won't be silenced. A true hero.

tortelliniforever · 31/03/2018 09:49

I thought it was a very good piece right up to the point quoted by BiologyMatters.

Actually I think this was a really good tactic. Criticizing transwomen as a group would be counter-productive - and also I think a lot of people don't have a problem with them per se (I certainly don't). The emphasis should be on finding solutions (which as she points out will be different in different situations) and letting women into the debate instead of trying to erase them.

TerfsUp · 31/03/2018 09:50

Was Man Friday was covered in the Guardian?

No. It was the only major newspaper - other than The FT - that didn't cover the event.

AlexisColbysFANCYfrock · 31/03/2018 09:50

Fabulous. Good work, Hadley. Succinct and sensible analysis.

Her opinion piece in the Guardian on antisenitism in the Labour Party was also brilliant.

I think I’ve got a bit of a crush on her Smile

Thank you Hadley.

Tackytriceratops · 31/03/2018 09:53

Yes her anti semitism piece was excellent.

I remember a line in it that made me think - you could directly apply that to the self id debate. Will have to read it again.

yetanothertranswoman · 31/03/2018 09:53

What do people think of the timing?

Given it's Trans Visbility Day?

NotBadConsidering · 31/03/2018 09:53

They don't have a moral obligation to let readers comment on articles - it's entirely up to them.

Yes, but when they do, they remove comments that challenge the article, and close comments after a few hours if it's going against the tone of the article. That suggests editorial policy rather than a workload for moderators issue. Like I said, I'm still grinding my axe about my comment challenging Sally Phillips' anti-abortion line disappearing. Angry

Tackytriceratops · 31/03/2018 09:54

I did wonder that.

But it's mainly about mansplaining to be fair. Which is why I think it's very fair and tactful.

The issue is not about trans. It's the silencing of women.

NoSquirrels · 31/03/2018 09:56

I understand what you’re saying with the disappointment.

But people are turned off even discussing it at the moment. And I just want it properly discussed. So I’ll happily take any soft-soaping if it gets the piece in a paper that serves the lefty dude bros who need to think about this.

I have started an AIBU if you’re also in love with Hadley Wink
