Another very disturbing development post trial ...

"Ulster and Ireland rugby player Paddy Jackson has said he intends to sue Labour Senator Aodhán Ó Riordáin for defamation after the politician sent a tweet in the wake of the Belfast rape trial verdicts."

www.irishtimes.com/news/crime-and-law/paddy-jackson-s-lawyers-say-he-intends-to-sue-aodh%C3%A1n-%C3%B3-riord%C3%A1in-over-tweet-1.3445578

You'll easily find a copy of the original tweet that caused offense.... can't believe he'd do that. I'm thinking I should sign up for twitter and post with#suemepaddy

If I was advising Paddy, I would be advising him to 'lie low' he has hardly come out of this sad case squeaky clean. So, I would be keeping a low profile, otherwise, the vitriol he has already been experiencing will be tenfold.

SmurfOrTerf · 30/03/2018 19:27

2 of them have publicly named the woman. I hope they get taken back to court

AskBasil · 30/03/2018 19:30

They should send people who name rape victims to prison. That's the only disincentive for these woman-haters.

LizzieSiddal · 30/03/2018 19:30

If he sues, wouldn’t he have to answer many questions in court about why the political felt the Tweet was true?

Also as the Tweet was quickly deleted, I expect there’s no case to answer.

Xmaspost · 30/03/2018 19:37

The original tweet is here .. it seems very reasonable to me (I'm English, living in England, but was working in Dublin a few days per week over the past months, have no idea who the politician is)

Vile excuse for a human being.

GrainneWail · 30/03/2018 19:41

I wonder if paddy is planning to due everyone who believes her?

Maryz · 30/03/2018 19:47

He's an idiot. Even if we all accept that he's never done anything illegal in his life, ever, there is no question his opinion on women and his attitudes to sex are pretty awful [understatement]. And that his interaction with a teenager left her bruised, bleeding and very upset.

His reaction: to allow his lawyers to call the girl all sorts of names, and instruct them to sue politicians, the media, the police and even (it seems) the girl he hurt.

I have much more time for Stuart Olding who has had the grace to apologise and say he regretted his behaviour and attitude. He may have been a shit, but at least he appears to realise it.

I think suemepaddy is great - it might just wake him up to the fact that he may be innocent of the charges against him, but that doesn't mean the public like him much.

Maryz · 30/03/2018 19:49

And if he does try to sue everyone who thinks he's an arse, he'll be pretty busy Hmm

Maryz · 30/03/2018 19:50

missed your post, Grainne - exactly.

Did the defendants in the case name her? Surely even they couldn't be so stupid Shock

BoreOfWhabylon · 30/03/2018 20:01

Here's Paddy blacked up and dressed as a slave.

Because that's funny as fuck, right?

Almost as funny as spit roasting a nineteen year old girl.

Thoughts on #suemepaddy ?
Hypermice · 30/03/2018 20:05

Urgh.

What’s the penalty / offence for naming a defendant who has anonymity?

Poor girl. I can see why women don’t report rape.

Hypermice · 30/03/2018 20:07

And what can he sue for? The politician says he believes the defendant. That’s a matter of opinion surely? I don’t see any defamation there.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 30/03/2018 20:09

Sorry, have 2 of the defendants in that case named the complainant?? Shock

Maryz · 30/03/2018 20:16

Jackson and Olding are also suing the BBC.

I bet Olding pulls out of that. He seems to just want to get his head down at this stage, Jackson and his lawyers seem to think they can force people to think he's a good guy Hmm

LassWiADelicateAir · 30/03/2018 20:16

Well if Aodhán Ó Riordáin is sued I will contribute to a crowd funder for him.

SmurfOrTerf · 30/03/2018 20:23

Zibbidoo I'm sure I heard that on Sky news this morning

boatyardblues · 30/03/2018 20:25

Can anyone point me to a concise summary of the case? I haven’t been following it, but I am interested in reading up on it.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 30/03/2018 20:26
Shock

I know the police have questioned at least 2 people that named her on social media but I assumed they were people unconnected with the case. I saw one person name her on Wednesday.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 30/03/2018 20:33

What hypermice and lass said

Maryz · 30/03/2018 20:33

here boaty.

I'm not sure if you need an account; if you do I can find a different summary.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 30/03/2018 20:34

Well and other comments...but particularly hyper and mice

I am allowed to believe her and i will happily donate to a go fund me page

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 30/03/2018 20:36

This is a bit like the Ched Evans case

Couldn't even tell you the name of the other man involved who was found not guilty

And not because he was 'innocent'

But because he kept his head down afterwards and didn't make twattish comments

Totallymyownperson · 30/03/2018 20:51

If the senator loses the case there should be a change in the law just because someone has voiced opinion that they don't agree with which is a verdict should never be good enough to sue someone. If it's his honest opinion I think he should be able to voice it. After all when someone is convicted people are allowed to say they don't agree with the verdict this despite a guilty verdict being reached when jurors are convinced person is guilty beyond reasonable doubt. When they are found not guilty it can be anything from having reasonable doubt to being totally convinced a person is innocent

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 30/03/2018 20:52

Well if Aodhán Ó Riordáin is sued I will contribute to a crowd funder for him
Yep, me too. I’m sick of this shit.
