Another very disturbing development post trial ...

"Ulster and Ireland rugby player Paddy Jackson has said he intends to sue Labour Senator Aodhán Ó Riordáin for defamation after the politician sent a tweet in the wake of the Belfast rape trial verdicts."

www.irishtimes.com/news/crime-and-law/paddy-jackson-s-lawyers-say-he-intends-to-sue-aodh%C3%A1n-%C3%B3-riord%C3%A1in-over-tweet-1.3445578

You'll easily find a copy of the original tweet that caused offense.... can't believe he'd do that. I'm thinking I should sign up for twitter and post with#suemepaddy

Does anyone know if he really tweeted that?

I presumed it was a piss-take by someone, I find it hard to believe he'd go straight back on twitter at all, much less to post that Shock

AdelicaArundel · 31/03/2018 14:01

Am pretty sure (have seen it on another site) that the tweet quoted above purporting to be from paddyjackson10 is a fake. (that's the "for whoever dares" one)

DeleteOrDecay · 31/03/2018 14:02

If it is real then it's absolutely disgraceful behaviour from him. Not that we should be surprised given what we know about his actions from that night.

I'd be embarrassed if he was a part of my family.

Maryz · 31/03/2018 14:04

I hope so, Adelica, but it's the same one that is now protected, so I dunno. Surely even he couldn't be that stupid.

TheCraicDealer · 31/03/2018 14:06

I'd be surprised if that tweet is real. The threat of litigation has been a PR disaster, but I think even Stevie Wonder would see the danger of the public seeing a newly acquitted defendant out on the sauce in a town as small as Belfast. Any celebrations were probably at home or something similarly low key, and I'd be very very shocked if he's started using social media again. His side are trying to shield him from reality. They're trying to play Whack-a-Troll with nasty people on the internet and seem to think if you make people stop talking about it it'll all go back to how it was two years ago. Spoiler alert- it won't, and you're making it worse.

I think how each of them behaves going forward with be an interesting lesson for anyone interested in PR, or just humans in general.

Berthatydfil · 31/03/2018 14:06

Maryz @paddyjackson10 is his Twitter name and it appears to be his tweet

Berthatydfil · 31/03/2018 14:11

If you follow the link under the picture you get his official biography and a link to his management company.
I thought these quotes were interesting

The tweet is from him its got the blue twitter tick to show its genuine

LoveManyTrustfew · 31/03/2018 14:47

Even before he was acquitted, there was no way he was going to ever pull on an Irish Jersey again.

LoveManyTrustfew · 31/03/2018 14:52

I grew up in Ireland, Aodhan O Riordan's politics would not be mine, I am not an FF'er either. Work that one out. Grin

Anyhoo I digress..I will happily contribute to a fund that will knock the smirk off Paddy Jackson's face.

DarthArts · 31/03/2018 16:25

Jackson seems intent on doing a huge favour to his pals by being the only one publicly maintaining his air of entitlement and failing to understand that a legal verdict in your favour does not automatically come with a guarantee of win in the court of popular opinion.

Olding' is at least trying to look as though he has some measure of contrition for the events that occurred.

PaulDacreRimsGeese · 31/03/2018 17:57

Yes, Olding is either genuinely remorseful or genuinely sensible, but either way he's going to come out of this better than Paddy the Fuckwit.

LassWiADelicateAir · 31/03/2018 18:13

If I were Olding's solicitor I would probably have advised against that statement- it opens up a chink for a possibility of a civil case.

If I were Olding's mother it would be a big first step towards my having some respect for my son.

PaulDacreRimsGeese · 31/03/2018 18:22

I wouldn't have said that about a civil case, though you may know NI law better than me in which case I defer.

Maryz · 31/03/2018 18:22

Exactly Lass.

And that's why I have more respect (not much, but a bit more) for him than for Jackson.

He's taking a risk but at least he's taking some responsibility for his behaviour.

treaclesoda · 31/03/2018 18:30

The rumours flying round Belfast are that SO's mother has really struggled with all of this, to the extent of her own health suffering. There was a lot of footage filmed of them going into and coming out of court etc and whilst his brother was sometimes there, I don't think his mother was.

Unlike, PJ's mother who was by his side and seemingly on his side throughout.

treaclesoda · 31/03/2018 18:32

Although I should have stressed the word 'rumours' because really people say all sorts of things, and who knows really...

EasterRobin · 31/03/2018 19:08

Does anyone else wonder if Paddy's lawyer is just looking for more work following the end of the rape trial? Because I can't see any other reason why he'd recommend suing for that tweet. And now he has loads of work coming his way reading all those #suemepaddy tweets! Lucky well-paid man. I'm assuming Paddy has plenty of money to keep paying him?

PaulDacreRimsGeese · 31/03/2018 19:18

Is it the same lawyer? I'd want a criminal specialist to defend me against rape and a defamation specialism to advise me on the merits of a libel case. Mind, law in NI is a very small world. Could be the same firm. And if it is a non-specialist, that would explain why they think they're monitoring What's App.

TheCraicDealer · 31/03/2018 19:20

I'd heard similar treacle. Probably much harder to tell yourself you did nothing wrong and lash out at people calling you out for your behaviour when your family aren't patting you on the head telling you what a great guy you are and how unlucky you've been.

LassWiADelicateAir · 31/03/2018 19:24

I don't know why they are recommending this or even that they are recommending this but everything they are saying must have been approved and instructed by their client.

TheCraicDealer · 31/03/2018 19:28

IMO they're getting instructions from clients who always believed their relative and are annoyed/upset that the Not Guilty verdict hasn't resulted in the public vindication they'd been anticipating. It's smacks if taking online reactions too personally and lashing out rather than looking at the bigger picture like Olding seems to have done.
