More comments now up on Mail story.

And yes, good coverage in the Independent, including a link to the petition.

Thank you Olivia Petter mobile.twitter.com/oliviapetter1

Bet she's a Mumsnetter

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 18/03/2018 11:28

Oops! Too soon, but now!!

JenniferJames · 18/03/2018 11:31

Amy and Hannah, and everyone else at Mighty Mumsnet involved in Man Friday, this is PURE GENIUS. I am IN!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 18/03/2018 11:39

That Independent article was really good. I hope this is the beginning of sanity?

CapnHaddock · 18/03/2018 11:40

That Independent article is great!

Mouth

Seems to be based in a conflation of Paraphilic Transvestism with Gender Dysphoria.

Nicola, a transactivist, thinks it's wrong to conflate fetishistic cross dressing with gender (sex) dysphoria. Unfortunately, Stonewall disagrees.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 18/03/2018 11:42

I wish I could say the same about the debate on tv right now.
People just don't seem to get it.

They referred to us as a small group of people who do not believe in trans rights.

Ereshkigal · 18/03/2018 11:44

What channel is that? Media like BBC and C4 are trying their damndest to socially engineer here. They are not doing this in good faith.

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 18/03/2018 11:45

I see thanks.

I mean it's a Daily Mail article. It's going to focus on the tits and it's readers are going to be baffled. This is only one outcome out of the "Man Friday" activism.

Don't forget it has arisen out of the Swim UK guidelines which, among other gems suggests customers and staff need to be re-educated if they object to opposite-sex-presenting people in their sex segregated space.

Leaflets were distributed at the leisure centre explaining to customers they are allowed a to ask to keep the Swim same sex.

Another ManFriday activist did the same thing (with no press coverage) the week previous. They left leaflets and talked with management.

The staff at the leisure centres involved were forced to think and will no doubt fees back to the head offices about this.

It will lead to critical thinking wrt self identification.

Daily mail will focus on the tits but amazing work has been done.

Patodp · 18/03/2018 11:47

*feed back to head office

Writersblock2 · 18/03/2018 11:48

The Times headline was also about “Topless woman”, sooo. I still disagree.

Floisme · 18/03/2018 11:52

I don't think there's any point in worrying about press coverage.

When Christabel Pankhurst stood up in The Free Trade Hall, she wasn't treated fairly by the press.

Nor were the feminists who disrupted the Miss World contest.

Nor were the Greenham Common women.

And so on.

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/03/2018 11:54

Sunday Politics on iPlayer from around 11:30 am. Featuring Heather Peto, who has 'Always known she's a woman' and wants to be the first Transwoman MP. Shame they didn't feature some of Heather's interesting history as detailed here

In the meantime, signatures on the petition are rising!

Waddlelikeapenguin · 18/03/2018 11:56

Oh the Independent article is brilliant Star

Writersblock2 · 18/03/2018 11:57

With respect, there’s a large difference between displaying the stereotypical behaviour men in our society want, and a suffragette. The point is not about the specific coverage but rather the action. Anyway, I’ve mentioned how I feel, and I believe it’s important women can have critical discourse amongst themselves without there being a need for a blanket agreement. Free speech is, after all, part of what we are fighting for.
On that note, I’ll leave you to it on this thread. Good luck!

Ereshkigal · 18/03/2018 11:58

I think the Daily Politics report is quite balanced. Frankly, using Peto as a figurehead is an own goal.

TheBrilloPad · 18/03/2018 11:59

You two are amazing. Brace and wonderful. Huge huge love and respect from me, and thanks too. For doing something I don't feel brave enough to. Your courage gives me courage.

Ereshkigal · 18/03/2018 12:00

I'm heartened by the fact that Labour are postponing AWS decision due to the Mayday4Women resignation campaign and negative publicity. Not because I trust them to do the right thing, but because it shows that feminist activism is having an effect.

Ereshkigal · 18/03/2018 12:01

Julie Bindel was excellent on Sky News. The male presenter didn't like it but you could tell he didn't really know how to counter it.

Floisme · 18/03/2018 12:04

With respect, there’s a large difference between displaying the stereotypical behaviour men in our society want, and a suffragette.

I don't think there was much difference at the time. We may think of them as heroic now but in their day they were roundly ridiculed and abused.

I hope you don't go because I agree with some of what you're saying. I just think it's pointless worrying too much about unsympathetic treatment. It's going to happen whatever and always has.

picklemepopcorn · 18/03/2018 12:05

Well my FB share has met with a resounding silence. I wonder why?

thenightsky · 18/03/2018 12:06

pickle Mine too. Very disappointed given how long its taken me to pluck up courage to put it out there.
