I think the race comparison works quite well within limits.

If someone said "well I was born with a black skin but I didn't like doing the things black people do, therefore I feel I'm really 'white' because I'm more comfortable doing white people things" (or vice versa) most people would find that difficult to accept. Particularly if the 'things black people do' are rooted in stereotypes.

ALittleBitOfButter · 08/03/2018 07:58

When I was a student the table was the classic invocation to explain postmodernism during pub drinking sessions. Perhaps the interviewer is having a dig at pomo wankery?

Ereshkigal · 08/03/2018 08:06

Lily now needs more money because the cic-tem is wrong and she can't get benefits

How ridiculous. Does LM think these restrictions only apply to trans people?

Cwenthryth · 08/03/2018 08:13

Having heard Heather Brunskell-Evans the other day and LM last night, I thought, instead of my usual choice (Today on R4) I might give JHB a go on talk radio this morning.

I lasted 90 seconds - she’s deriding international women’s day because women actually have it pretty good and she’s fed up of all this whinging and moaning, it’s doing her head in apparently.

Back to R4. Covering the new proposals on domestic violence. And breathe.

Popchyk · 08/03/2018 08:18

Lifelong, someone on another thread referenced this video in which a black man identifies as a white man.

Lottapianos · 08/03/2018 08:18

'she’s deriding international women’s day because women actually have it pretty good and she’s fed up of all this whinging and moaning, it’s doing her head in apparently. '

Yep, that's the JHB i remember from her LBC days. She has the nerve to call herself a feminist as well 🙄

Whinberry · 08/03/2018 08:37

Really benefits - I thought LM was a full time student? That pretty much rules out benefits as your get a student loan instead.

SusanBunch · 08/03/2018 08:40

she’s deriding international women’s day because women actually have it pretty good and she’s fed up of all this whinging and moaning, it’s doing her head in apparently.

Yes, sorry to anyone who thought JHB was a hero/on our side for standing up to LM. Sadly, she's as anti-feminist as they get- think a reined in Katie Hopkins. Still good that the ludicrous nature of self-ID is being exposed but Julia is no ally.

sashh · 08/03/2018 08:48

Just look at who endorses LM

sashh 😂

Come on you naughty people, who did that?

Fekko · 08/03/2018 08:53

Anyone remember the old black and white film (possibly twilight zone) where the kids scared the beejezuz out of the adults because they had scary powers so they got to do what they wanted?

sashh · 08/03/2018 08:53

Liz anyone can do it, it was changed very quickly as was a comment about her passport.

bangkokhilton · 08/03/2018 09:30

@Popchyk thanks for sharing. Very funny!! I'll have to watch it again. So many quotable lines but when he's practising being a white 35 year old from Colorado in the mirror:
"What IPA do you have on tap? Did you watch Game of Thrones last night?"

His advice for any other black kids going through the same thing:

"Just be you....at all costs".

@sashh you're already following me on Twitter Wink I'm only liking & retweeting at the mo. Lots more eloquent tweeters saying it better than me!

Silk29 · 08/03/2018 09:31

The trans race/ethnicity debate is an interesting one with trans gender/sex issues in mind. Rachel Dolezal is maybe the best known example of someone who has altered her appearance to try to pass as black, and self-IDs as black.

Another interesting trans example is Martina Big who also self-IDs as black- this YouTube video is worth a watch -

The attached screenshot is LM stating, "I don't think it (transrace) is a thing". Hypocrisy at it's finest.

Does anyone have a reputable link to the statistic LM keeps throwing around re the majority of people are happy for trans women to access womens' spaces? Is it this one?
"We find that the vast majority of the public (84%) describe themselves as “not prejudiced at all” towards transgender people. However, less than half of people say that a suitably
qualified transgender person should definitely be employed as a police officer or primary school teacher (43% and 41% respectively), suggesting that there is a notable gap between the theory and practice of people’s attitudes."

Wtf does Lily mean by ‘gender is inert’?

LangCleg · 08/03/2018 09:43

The race and sex comparitor is applicable in the only way of interest to me. To whit:

It is an act of oppression for a member of an oppressor class to self-identify into an oppressed class.

This is all that matters.

AngryAttackKittens · 08/03/2018 09:46

I have got to the point now that if men get angry with me about women's rights they can kiss my arse

I've been there for a long time. Welcome, new arrivals, we have tea and cake.

lightoflaluna · 08/03/2018 09:50

I'd love James O Brien to get on board but the only time i've heard him talk about it he was saying he 'can't get worked up' about the idea of men and women using the same toilets. I was disappointed as he spoke a lot at the time about sexual harrassement when Weinstein and Me Too was first in the news.

Lottapianos · 08/03/2018 09:59

I know light, he's good at shouting about stuff from the rafters, but he has totally bought into the trans activist crap. He talks about his good friend Paris Lees being a 'wonderful person' Confused, and sneered at a female caller recently who said that she would be uncomfortable using changing rooms with biological men

In other LBC-related news, Dawn Butler was interviewed on Nick Ferrari's show this morning about something else, but at the end he asked her about Munroe Bergdorf and whether she should have done more research before appointing Munroe in an advisory role. According to Dawn, Munroe has apologised profusely for the tweets that were posted (news to me), and its all good. When asked if she would make the same decision again, knowing what she now knows about Munroe, she flapped a bit then said yes, more than once. Dear god. Apparently Munroe's 'lived experience' as a transwoman of colour is absolutely invaluable and made Munroe highly suitable to take on the advisory role. I thought that 'lived experience' didn't matter a fig, and it was all about the feelz. Only when it suits the agenda I guess Hmm

Vangoghsear · 08/03/2018 10:06

I think part of the problem is that there is not enough attention given to science in the media. It's wrong that scientists and scientific advances get so little attention.
In this case the issue of biological sex that cannot be changed is not even difficult to understand. XY = male.

merrymouse · 08/03/2018 10:07

Maybe O’Brien could get a bit more worked up about official guidelines that tell children that there is some kind of unknowable completely unscientific essence of male or female that dictates who we are and how we feel and behave.

I don’t have a problem with unisex facilities where appropriate. I do have a problem with local councils giving guidance that tells teachers to tell girls that somebody with a male body is somehow ‘in every other respect a girl’, and I have a problem with the Guides excluding some boys and including others on the basis of their ‘identity’. (On that basis it’s only logical for them to also exclude girls who don’t ‘identify’ as female.)

KatherinaMinola · 08/03/2018 10:12

I'd love James O Brien to get on board but the only time i've heard him talk about it he was saying he 'can't get worked up' about the idea of men and women using the same toilets.

Ghastly man. I'd never heard of him before but I heard the recording of him bullying that feminist who phoned in - thereby neatly demonstrating the problem of male violence towards women.

Lottapianos · 08/03/2018 10:13

'and I have a problem with the Guides excluding some boys and including others on the basis of their ‘identity’. '

And telling girls (or their parents) who have a problem with it that they can just shove off Angry

merrymouse · 08/03/2018 10:13

In this case the issue of biological sex that cannot be changed is not even difficult to understand. XY = male.

The problem is that people confuse intersex conditions with being trans as though all trans people are intersex or all intersex people claim to identify with a particular gender. It all gets lost in ‘biology is complicated’ nonsense.

With all this apparent confusion about women and men it’s a wonder that babies continue to be born.

TeaEnjoyingRadientFeminist · 08/03/2018 10:18

@SlowlyShrinking I think LM meant to say innate Confused which is still bollocks
