Why are more women not worried about impact of transactivism?

It is largely thanks to MN that I have been made aware of the gender identification bill and the potential impact of it.

I have been reading more and trying to be better informed.

In some of articles I have read I have noticed the category of 'woman' divided into women and ciswomen. I find it very unsettling that I would be defined as the latter, as opposed to just as a woman.

When I raise this issue with my friends, they are largely unconcerned.

Why are not more women worried right now?

I wonder how many women are still on the fence. That's where I am, and I don't like it - it's very uncomfortable.

One the one hand, people want me to define 'woman' but when I define woman as a legal/social construct people shout at me for failing to understand biology.

On the other hand, when I check my privilege, I find that I have very little cis privilege because I am frequently discriminated against on the basis of my gender presentation (i.e. woman). So I get shouted at for failing to understand social constructivism.

Of course it's entirely possible that I'm just really thick and don't understand anything at all.

Not enough women are prepared to speak up and raise awareness. It's so frustrating. The silent majority agree that penises don't belong in women only spaces. But they won't speak up as they'll be attacked and called a bigot and nobody will back them up.

Haha Kittens - "of course it's possible that I'm just really thick" - said no man, ever.

Well privilege works in different ways, doesn't it? I've got cis privilege insofar as nobody is going to beat me up for wearing women's clothes. Arguably a trans woman hasn't got cis privilege but retains at least some male privilege, which I haven't got.
Seems like at least some of this debate is about who gets to claim the privilege of not being privileged, and truth is, we all have our crosses to bear.

Brilliant news!

Nosetothesun · 16/03/2018 16:21

They don't know.... when they have an inkling, they are tied in knots and terrified of challenging it.

ALittleAubergine · 16/03/2018 16:31

We've heard of it being implemented in other countries without any apparent huge issues for women's sport, safe spaces and security overall. Is it being hushed up? Many women might also have 100 other more immediate concerns on their mind and are not actively taking part in the discussion. Some may genuinely not have any problem with it. Probably lots of reasons.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 16/03/2018 17:29

Most are totally unaware of it. And also think 'trans' means transsexual.

I was actually the first of my friendship group to understand this matter fully, and largely thanks to MN. When I have been disgussing this with people, they tend to have a 'omg you are transphobic' recoil, then as the discussion progresses, they are increasingly concerned and quite disbelieving. And every single time, they end up just as 'terfy' as I am. People just do not believe that 'self ID' is exactly as it sounds, anyone being able to self declare their sex..regardless of any actual changes made to themselves

Feedback I’ve got from female friends in Ireland is that it is not all rosy

Patodp · 16/03/2018 17:38

Canada is a shitstorm waiting to hit a fanstorm.
All is not fine there.

Vango · 16/03/2018 17:41

And while Ireland is busy holding itself up as a beacon of ‘trans rights’, women in 2018 still pay for contraception.

ALittleAubergine · 16/03/2018 18:34

Bumble and patod, do you have any specific information or links or something, I've tried to Google to see how things have gone in self Id countries but can't find anything.

Bumblebzz · 16/03/2018 18:44

It’s directly from friends living there. Without quoting as it would be outing, the feedback is that trans rights have overtaken and take priority over women’s rights, and they also refer to an undercurrent of deviancy which wasn’t there or tolerated before. .

Patodp · 16/03/2018 18:57

Here are just a few. . I think there's a whole thread on Canada in Feminist Chat.

Canadian officials desperately trying to prove sports should not be segregated by sex, but by identity

Canada houses prisoners according to identity not sex

Canada passes bill criminal offense for wrong pronouns

The press have to abide by strict rules as to never "dead name" or misgender, or they face serious penalties. You can imagine what problems this causes, ie people can commit crimes, change gender, comit the same crime, but you can't ever know their previous identity.
Rather helpful if you happen to be a criminal moving into a new area...

This is quite shocking:
bannedbytrans.wordpress.com/read-first-introduction/

The list of violence to women is just awful, and growing longer all the time.

transcendentphobic · 17/03/2018 09:53

shuey012 that link is shocking Shock
