Who's up for a self-ID day of activism?

246 replies

YesItsADebate · 23/02/2018 15:06

Following on from my swimming thread, I'd like to guage interest to see who would be interested in taking part in a day where we all self-ID as men and take part in various forms of activism.

Some ideas from the other thread:

  • a mass swim in the men's pond in Hampstead;
  • manspreading on public transport;
  • sunbathing/sauntering around in shorts and flip-flops;
  • using the men's loos;
  • using men's changing rooms;
  • applying for membership of men-only golf clubs, gentlemen's clubs, the Freemasons' men's lodges etc.
  • going to men-and-toddler play sessions (with bacon butties!);
  • mansplaining, interrupting other participants in meetings and generally acting with a chauvinistic sense of superiority.

I'm sure you can come up with more. Vaguely planning for the summer when it's a bit warmer! Anyone up for it?

Disclaimer: while the law on Exposure (formerly indecent exposure) only applies to genitals, exposing breasts in public may amount to a public nuisance if it's done with the intent to shock, upset or annoy. I'll have a look a bit later for better guidance.

OMG T-shirts - brilliant. "This is what a self-identifying man looks like!" (I may get his and hers ones so swap man for woman so DH can have one)!

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 23/02/2018 18:15

This is just amazing 😄

newtlover · 23/02/2018 18:19

can anyone give more info on the women's march in Manchester?

Dominithecat · 23/02/2018 18:22

Fantastic. Im in. T-shirts too. Mine may say manspreader alert.
Or something like that.
Man Friday is gonna be brilliant

ImKait · 23/02/2018 18:24

How else can we make them feel as uncomfortable about female presence in male space as we feel about male presence in female space?

I'm very willing to be persuaded otherwise BTW. I do not actually want to sink to the level of the misogynist behaviour that we experience day-to-day.

Rallying, doing things like the OP is suggesting, making it an issue so government takes notice and not voting for parties that support this. Not attacking individuals - how would you feel if this happened to your DH, DS? There are men that are on side and they are probably those that are most likely to be made to feel uncomfortable.

Destinysdaughter · 23/02/2018 18:27

If pp don't want to bear their boobs in the pool, how about wearing a light coloured costume with a fake chest wig on it!!

OfficerGrant · 23/02/2018 18:28

Signing in for the swim-in at Hampstead men's pond.

I follow lots of lidos on twitter as I'm a keen cold water swimmer. (aka 'swimmer' in Ireland Grin)

I wonder if they are all in some sort of trade organisation that's not swim England, and what their policy might be on this. Anyone any good lido contacts?

JellySlice · 23/02/2018 18:30

how would you feel if this happened to your DH, DS?

My dh is definitely one of those who are on-side with us. He peak transed a few months ago.

OTOH I would be very pleased if this were to happen to my ds. He is one of the "meh, doesn't affect me" brigade, who definitely needs his eyes opened.

And if he had insecurities which someone attacked to further their cause, despite him being on side and not part of problem? Your DH might be mentally strong but not everyone is.

I know people with your DS's attitude as well and I highly suspect they'd be the ones not to care about this either.

BigEthel · 23/02/2018 18:38

I'm in and call me Big Ethered from now on.

BigEthel · 23/02/2018 18:38

Or Ethelred even!

JellySlice · 23/02/2018 18:42

While I'm 100% up for joining a Self-Identifying Man swim-in at the Hampstead Mens' Pond, my boobs will certainly not be floating free - I don't do outdoor swimming in the UK without my faithful wetsuit! Not that even a wetsuit could disguise my Rubenseque femaleness Grin

I'd wear a T-shirt over, or wrap a 'binder' round me, with MrsFogi's^ This is what a self-identifying man looks like^ on it!

Elletorro · 23/02/2018 18:47

Ok so on the back of the t shirt

Appropriate swimwear suggestion?

itsgettinghotinhere80 · 23/02/2018 18:54

This is brilliant!! I'd love to join in

RaininSummer · 23/02/2018 19:01

If we could do random acts of manliness, snigger, all over the country on the same day that would be awesome. I need to he careful not to be arrested sadly because of my job but I think going into changing rooms, loos etc would be fine. I am in the SouthWest. We need to join up somehow without losing our online anonymity.

MrsFogi · 23/02/2018 19:02

ManFriday - 8 June 2018?

ElfrideSwancourt · 23/02/2018 19:05

I'm definitely in - also in south west but would happily travel into London for this.

MsBeaujangles · 23/02/2018 19:14

Maybe we should start a campaign demanding that sanpro dispensers are installed in men’s loos so we can access manpons for our manstration needs, alongside the disposal units necessary for men having man periods.

YesItsADebate · 23/02/2018 19:17

MrsFogi I have an exam on 8th June but could do the 15th?

*MessyBun’ came up with the idea of t-shirts saying I AM A MAN, which could be worn over swimwear or just around town on the day. I think that’s a good plan.

OP posts:
YesItsADebate · 23/02/2018 19:18

Or the 16th would be good. The day before Fathers Day. Which, obvs, we would want to celebrate.

Lweji · 23/02/2018 19:21

I'm thinking of self identifying and next time there's a queue in the ladies.

Lweji · 23/02/2018 19:22

And father's day, yes. Good point. Being a single mum and all.

PositivelyPERF · 23/02/2018 19:23

What bout tee shirts with something s simple as i am a self identifying man on the front and a photo of one of the self identifying 'women' on the back such as the TIM that won the female weight lifting competition, the Tim that won the female fitness comp in jail, there are so many to chose from.
