I don’t like the term “peak trans”

I mean I get it. But I think your term should be peak TRA.

“Peak- “ is, as I understand it, a reference to the term “ peak oil” with all the connotations of the amount of oil reducing down to nothing.

Which is not, I hope, the way anyone feels about trans people.

Just my take on things

I would like to thank the mn feminist board and Anne Ruzylo for peaking me.

lottiegarbanzo · 20/02/2018 22:16

I'm amazed people haven't heard of peak oil.

BUT the subject of the term is different. In peak oil, the subject is oil - it is oil use that peaks. In peak trans, the subject is actually 'I' as in 'I have reached...'

So, it's not about too many trans people at all. It is about the 'I' concerned having reached a point of 'peak awareness' of a certain type of personal-political doctrine.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/02/2018 22:17

Thanks pan. I think I see what you are saying.

"Peak" originally referred to oil, specifically (M. King) Hubbert's peak, who theorised that there would come a point in time when maximum rate of extraction for petroleum would be reached, which has huge implications for economics and civilisation which are dependent on fossil fuels.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil

It has come to be used colloquially as a tipping point when one has reached the limit of something, or something has become a parody of itself, such as peak Guardian for a story about hipsters making quinoa infused craft beer or somesuch.

UrsulaPandress · 20/02/2018 22:19

No peak did not originally refer to oil.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/02/2018 22:20

Lottie I guess language changes...

TheFallenMadonna · 20/02/2018 22:20

Peak Whatever is used all the time. "Have we reached Peak Beard?" was I'm pretty sure a thread on here a while back... Something that is overexposed and thus starting to fall out of favour. So a reference to a bell curve. Given it's wide usage, it's not unreasonable for the OP to assume it refers to that and not some hillwalking analogy.

lottiegarbanzo · 20/02/2018 22:21

Yes, saturation.

So peak is synonymous with 'I'm so over...' etc.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/02/2018 22:21

Thanks Madonna

OP posts:
UrsulaPandress · 20/02/2018 22:22

Yes a bell curve. Has a peak in it.

lottiegarbanzo · 20/02/2018 22:23

Well, exactly, it does. So now you know about the common contemporary 'peak' usage.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/02/2018 22:23

I had a similar problem when fellow environmentalists started using the term “climate change denier”. If you don’t know where the phrase has come from it sounds fine, but if you do know, you realise, it can damage your own cause.

I agree with Barrack in that peak trans refers to reaching the end of your capacity to accept trans ideology. This is not about having issues with individuals with gender dysphoria or those who are gender non conforming. It is about not being able to deny basic facts about sex and sexed bodies and clearly seeing sex and gender as completely different things (and gender being a load of damaging nonsense).

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/02/2018 22:25

I guess the difference between us Ursula is that I am listening and learning.

TheFallenMadonna · 20/02/2018 22:25

I don't understand why you are shaking your head and asking people if they are thick.

TheLastMermaid · 20/02/2018 22:26

Peak oil? Never heard of it.

Mountain peaks, concept of peaking - very clear, long-standing meanings.

rb67 · 20/02/2018 22:27

I can't see any trolling. I like the idea of peak misogyny. That is what it is.

thebewilderness · 20/02/2018 22:31

Did you ever notice how a graph looks like a mountain range?

QuentinSummers · 20/02/2018 22:31

Coincidence here or what?

TheFallenMadonna · 20/02/2018 22:32

The phrase "peak " stems from the phrase peak oil. Obviously peaks were around before peak oil (!), but that's where this construction comes from.

UrsulaPandress · 20/02/2018 22:33

It's clearly an age think.

Good luck with your future.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/02/2018 22:33

Mermaid,
There are perhaps a million people in this country who have heard of peak oil and who read it as I do.

Those people might think that “peak trans” means something more negative than is intended.

Just saying...

OP posts:
PositivelyPERF · 20/02/2018 22:34

Oh for goodness sake! Thank you QuentinSummers. I should have realised it was a transmaiden. 🙄

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/02/2018 22:34

Quentin.

Bloody hell.

Yes

Coincidence.
