No, I was told by our PSHE consultant that I couldn’t share the previous document with colleagues because it contravenes the EA. I know it didn’t.

I'm not doubting your story, I'm just wondering about this previous document. Most schools have documents from mermaids?

Was it one of those that your PSHE thought contravened the equality act?

Its quite small on the link too tbh, but larger than what it went when I tried to post it. I am not very techy Grin

Yeah they seem to be arguing strange points. None of which are about equality law?

No one doubts that gender dysphoria is real, and crippling. And needs treatment.

But you can't just disregard the overwhelming evidence that it is young lesbian or gender nonconforming girls who have been pressured into becoming trans.

Many detransition stories are of women.

And you can't ignore the rights of other children in favour of someone who is trans. You just can't. It's against the quality act.

I don't think transgender trend disseminated documents to schools? They just have some on their website.

Anyway, I'm sure schools can make up their own minds. I can see how many of them might be conflicted by being told that letting children know you can't actually change sex is hate speech!

I am finding it really hard to understand how a document that basically says..break down gender stereotypes and kids will be happier, don't shove them onto drugs and tell them they are the opposite sex because of the toys they play with/clothes they wear..is being seen as hate speech.

Surely breaking down gender is good for everyone?

According to more than one TRA it has been reported the DfE and as a hate publication if it is seen in any school, or in any teachers mailbox they will be prosecuted Shock Hmm

On what possible grounds?

TRA do seem to excel at piling on pressure and scare mongering.

It would be good to bring out into the open what actual material is available to schools for public scrutiny. Nothing to lose.

Someone on twitter has no ability to prosecute someone for having received a document. If the document commits a hate crime then let them raise this - sounds like classic scare tactics to me.

It's a hate document apparently

Should have been clearer. Apparently DfE has stated that they will prosecute (and that OFSTED inspectors will be looking out for it)

Yes, and the Womens and Equalities etc like Giuliana's twitter posts upthread. I am not convinced.

Oh for goodness' sake.

I rather hope the DfE DO try to prosecute a school for reading a document that says, basically, 'be nice to children and maintain your usual standards'. I'd like to see this examined forensically.

Anyone know a good lawyer?

Where have you heard this, it’sallgoingtobefine? I’m not doubting you, just can’t see anything via google or on their website about this. It seems very hasty if so, surely they would want their lawyers to examine the document first.
Even then, the most they could do is report it to the police you can’t prosecute off your own bat. A test case might not be a bad idea.

I hope this too. Sadly I can't see it happening

Absolute nonsense.

The DfE doesn't proscribe publications and it has nothing directly to do with inspections, which is Ofsted. Ofsted are looking for specific things related to teaching and don't prosecute schools but write reports.

Also, as someone else pointed out, the pamphlet had only been launched the day before. I've never yet known the DfE to respond in under three weeks, let alone 24 hours.

And I'm all for the DfE scrutinising it from top to bottom.

The only thing this issue needs is oxygen.

I suspect the DfE are probably busier with times tables at the moment.

TRA tweets. It's absolutely not true though - just trying to scare people into not reading it.

What we need is honest, objective, evidenced-based advice for schools, so that teachers are can use their judgement, and think about the issues involved.

Oxygen is the right word - the more the better for this debate.

No way have the DfE replied to TRAs nonsense already, and I cannot see why OFSTED would be interested in this either

Clearly just scare tactics. Mind, scare tactics and threats have worked well for them so far so I see why they still do it. They are very very rattled over this.

just trying to scare people into not reading it.

Spreading it around the way they are doing is surely counter productive?! Its going to make more people aware of it, and if they actually read it then most rational people will see it is not transphobic at all and wonder why TRAs are so intent on scaring people away from it. More peak trans coming up I guess. I cannot see any teacher reading that and thinking it was hate speech. Its all about bloody acceptance of kids who are 'different'

Report
Datun · 14/02/2018 17:10

Exactly. They either bully people into submission, or they simply block them. They have no dissenting voices. No questioning voices. No normal people saying hang on a minute.

Which is why when India Willoughby went on Big Brother, she peaked all the viewers over night.

She had no idea that normal, everyday people would object to her shenanigans.

Whilst displaying only a fraction of the TIM entitlement that we see everywhere else.

TRAs don't realise that people are only just beginning to wake up.

They truly think that this is going to be played out between them and feminists. Not them and the rest of the country.

Let them draw attention to it. People aren't sheep. They will want to make up their own mind.

Especially if it means they don't have to get involved in a whole load of celebratory cake making every time a kid plays with a different toy.

Or incur the wrath of parents everywhere when suddenly the toilets are mixed.

It is laughable when people say we are the ones obsessed with trans people, and that Mumsnet is the echo chamber.

Hmm

The more people become aware of self ID and its implications, the better.
