I've recently become addicted to a Gofundme campaign. Every time I press refresh the total raised has jumped up and I don't seem to be able to stop.

I'm trying to stay within Mumsnet rules here, so obviously I can't link or promote it.

Does anyone else have this enjoyable problem?

She has also just said (regarding the fake name thing and J Monroe):

"This is fair enough. It's fine to donate on behalf of 'Almighty God', 'Christabel Pankhurst' and 'Objective Reality'... but let's not use others' names, people, please.
It raises the temperature of a debate which deserves to remain cool, calm, comradely and respectful."

BarrackerBarmer · 19/01/2018 14:51

I hate fecking Twitter. I can never FIND anything. Nothing is ever in chronological order. Can you link to that tweet about birth certificates Ekphrasis please?

KizzyBear · 19/01/2018 14:51

Just checked my email to see anything from go fund me, nothing.
But I have been sent this from Colleen fletcher 😁

Ha! - I did donate as Objective Reality and got the Borg set on me, so clearly not!

Terrylene · 19/01/2018 14:54

CMS appfee £20
Payand collectfee £xx

I think it might be ok if you mentioned costs that were applicable to the campaign, eg legal advice, publicity, court fees, although it would not be the actual cost, unless you win the lottery or something Grin

Collidascope · 19/01/2018 14:55

I'm not keen on Jack Munroe but I do see what she means on this issue. On the other hand, it is infuriating that the TRAs apprear allowed to be as aggressive, threatening and rude as they like whereas the rad fems have to stick with calm, logical arguments and are lambasted as soon as they deviate from that, even with humour. It feels like we are always on the defensive and the TRAs are always on the attack. It was particularly apparent with Jolyon Maugham on Twitter yesterday. He was attacked with all the emotive language and accusations of bigotry and he instantly caved. The little 'trans women are women' soundbites stick in the average person's mind more than a long rational argument as to why biology matters and gender is bullshit and shouldn't be enforced. It's the same reason the Conservatives parroted the 'strong and stable leadership' thing rather than producing a coherent argument as to why they should be re-elected. Of course, that became a ridiculous parody. Would be great if 'trans women are women' went the same way.

BeyondWW · 19/01/2018 14:59

I’m out and on my phone, so just marking my place with a Shock emoticon

EamonnWright · 19/01/2018 15:00

Did Jack buy her name then? It might be a bit juvenile but it's bullshit she can do anything about it. Gofundme wouldn't last the day.

BarrackerBarmer · 19/01/2018 15:05

GoFundMe are refunding donations already Eamonn, for any reason they fancy, it seems

Sorry, should have done so In post!

pisacake · 19/01/2018 15:10

of course she has no right to the name jack monroe, she's a horrid bully, there must be hundreds of jack monroes.

Datun · 19/01/2018 15:10

The latest update:

"Reminder to donors! It's fine to donate on behalf of 'Almighty God', 'Christabel Pankhurst' and 'Objective Reality'... but let's not donate in others' names, people, please.

It raises the temperature of a debate which deserves to remain cool, calm, comradely and respectful.

We don't need to fight dirty. We don't need to use ad hominem attacks, logical fallacies or snark because our arguments are CORRECT. The facts, science and logic are our weapons, here.

Now let's go get 'em...
Help spread the word!"

Totally agree it's double standards.

But we don't need to take the piss. The arguments bear every bit of scrutiny possible.

BarrackerBarmer · 19/01/2018 15:12

Ha! - I did donate as Objective Reality and got the Borg set on me, so clearly not!

Are you on Twitter?
Jennifer James doesn't realise that GoFundMe are rejecting donations using names like this.

BeyondWW · 19/01/2018 15:29

Just checked, mine in my variation of my real name doesn’t appear to have been refunded. So that’s umm something Confused

Vicxy · 19/01/2018 15:29

I actually know a Jack Monroe. And a Jack Munroe too.

Its really not that rare a name.

I have a Liam Madigan on my friends list on facebook also.

ThomasRichard · 19/01/2018 15:31

I tried to re-donate my refund but it won’t let me. No error message, it just doesn’t go through.

EamonnWright · 19/01/2018 15:33

Jack/John Munroe is a common name. I can't believe she was able to do that. Could I do a search and find any Eamonn Wright and force them to refund them all?

I can only think that JJ is doing it as a courtesy to Jack.

Ekphrasis · 19/01/2018 15:46

I have begun to be more active on Twitter. I've followed a few people with all our concerns. What has surprised me is that they sometimes end up name calling (albeit, not really anything harsh but upsets the TRA).

I am trying to only talk facts, no emotions just science and the POV of many women. Occasionally my experiential POV.

There's no point calling them a trans cult; it falls on deaf ears just as bigot falls on my deaf ears and I disengage in any discussion. LM has set up that fb group to collect anything remotely inflammatory; I avoid even out right saying "trans women are men" as to them it's upsetting and 'hate speech' - I say it clothed in facts and science and reasonable statements, and o try to include a trans women's POV in that I acknowledge life must have been difficult and they too may have faced certain challenges - but often making this point that those Challenges are entirely different to a women's, past and present. And so we are separate but could support each other as long as there is mutual respect; for me respecting that women's spaces need to be retained is a big part of this.

I think if we take this approach we present reasoned un threatening debate which only shows up those within the TRA who resort to verbal abuse. Don't give them grounds to think there's any verbal abuse coming from our side.

Redonionricedpotato · 19/01/2018 15:57

I’ve just been refunded.

BelligerentGardenPixies · 19/01/2018 15:59

I’m not on Twitter Barracker, I have an ancient account that I’ve never used but it’s locked because it wants my phone number (and I can’t remember the password). I’ve contemplated resurrecting it, maybe I’ll try this evening... or make a new one.

QuentinSummers · 19/01/2018 16:04

The thing with that approach ekphrasis is that even quite reasonable statements are classified as hate speech.
Such as women have periods/babies/lactate/menopause/hysterectomies
Or women don't have penises/prostates

In fact any inkling that you care about woman as a biological category will lead to you being denounced as a transphobe

pisacake · 19/01/2018 16:05

Jack & her lackeys are busy submitting a list of 'unacceptable' donations.

twitter.com/StubbornDogs/status/954364033003646976

Apparently Donald Trump was removed.

AFAIK gofundme deliberately allows people to make comedy names, I donated to my sister as 'boris johnson', so it's pretty shitty for them to suddenly decide that we have to be po-faced when the transactivists get pissed off.

pisacake · 19/01/2018 16:10

that shit head says "They’ve removed several I saw there yesterday but they’ve singled out one to stay and have not removed seven people’s names in public domain -"

I mean what the fuck? Are people not allowed to be called Mandy Moore even if it's their real name?

Fucking arseholes.

Badgerthebodger · 19/01/2018 16:10

Barracker yes! Why is it so difficult to fathom? It’s not good for my blood pressure anyway. I have to do it in short bursts and not look at anything too infuriating or I might combust. Patrick Harvie in particular can get to fuck, what a knob

BelligerentGardenPixies · 19/01/2018 16:10

I begrudgingly agree that playing it straight is probably the best strategy in the end, but it’s just typical that women have to “play nice” and a bit of piss taking is categorized as hate speech, whilst actual hate speech AT women is ignored or exulted as “just desserts”.

Same old, same old.
