AIBU GoFundMe addiction

I've recently become addicted to a Gofundme campaign. Every time I press refresh the total raised has jumped up and I don't seem to be able to stop.

I'm trying to stay within Mumsnet rules here, so obviously I can't link or promote it.

Does anyone else have this enjoyable problem?

I wonder if the people that donated purely to write abusive comments have demanded refunds, in which case gofundme needs to assert that a. donations are not refundable and b. a donation does not buy you the right to abuse other people or the funding platform rules

Glitterypinksoap · 19/01/2018 13:38

Gofundme are likely to be under a lot of pressure and may be willing to bend the rules on returning and refunding to avoid having to delete the entire campaign.

Vicxy · 19/01/2018 13:42

Surely they could not just remove donations of anyone reported to be using a fake name, as the name might be real, just matching someone elses. No name is reserved for solely one person

There would surely not be an option of doing it iun a name except your own if this was such a huge problem either, and this cannot be the first time its happened.

Also yes, I think there could maybe be something to the TRAs donating in fake names to make supporters look bad/cause trouble in some of the cases.

Popchyk · 19/01/2018 13:52

I think JJ herself is refunding anyone who has either requested a refund or has donated in a jokey (obviously not real) name. I guess she has automatically refunded whoever donated as Jack.

Which is very decent of her since Gofundme do not issue refunds themselves.

Of course anyone who has been refunded can then immediately donate again.

Looks like mine has been refunded (I used a jokey name, not a real person). So I'll donate again. And add another £10. No way to putting my real name in there though.

BarrackerBarmer · 19/01/2018 13:53

They've confirmed that they won't remove donations where a donor has name changed.

pisacake · 19/01/2018 14:00

Jack Monroe seems clear that she has told GoFundMe what to do and they are doing it.

twitter.com/BootstrapCook/status/954301254926307328

But she is full of shit, so.

It wouldn't surprise me if she's telling the truth tho, Gofundme must have taken more shit over this small petition worth to them just a few hundred quid than a thousand normal petitions.

Trans activists have learned that bullying works. Again and again they bully, and again and again it pays off.

pisacake · 19/01/2018 14:01

other tweet on same topic. twitter.com/BootstrapCook/status/954300760711467008

BarrackerBarmer · 19/01/2018 14:02

"That's completely correct.

We won't refund, cancel or reject any donation that has been made in the past because the donor changed the name on it. That would contradict our help guide!

We can refund donations retrospectively if we find reasons, mostly related to fraud, but a name change on the donation once it has been processed and accepted is not one of the reasons to refund. I would be worried as well if somebody told me the same as you've been told.".

This was GoFundMe's stance today via email.

pisacake · 19/01/2018 14:03

well then either gofundme are talking shit, or Jack Monroe is libelling GoFundMe.

One or the other which will it be.

Someone call the mother fuckin lawyers

BelligerentGardenPixies · 19/01/2018 14:07

Mine has been refunded. I didn’t use a persons name but it was a “jokey phrase” - I’ll re-donate and chuck another tenner in.

I’m going anon - though, I have a unique combination of first and last name so very easily findable on social media and I’m not up for that kind of shit just yet. I may stick my head above the parapet if this shit keeps driving onwards.

BarrackerBarmer · 19/01/2018 14:10

Did you get an explanation BelligerentGardenPixies?

Can you challenge them on their reasons - if donors don't know the rules about what names you can and can't rules this is very undermining.

I can see donations going back up again, so if your example is anything to go by, this attempt to police the donors may be backfiring.

Redonionricedpotato · 19/01/2018 14:11

If they refund me I’ll just re donate as anon.

Popchyk · 19/01/2018 14:12

Mine was originally LyraLyra Pantsonfire-a, which has been refunded. Ta much JJ.

So I just did the anonymous thing this time. Went through no problem.

IrkThePurist · 19/01/2018 14:15

Wait, so if a TRA donates under a fake name, then demands a refund, does it cost the fund money?
Because if go Fund Me dont refund, does the person get a full refund and the Go Fund Me percentage comes out of the fund?

BelligerentGardenPixies · 19/01/2018 14:20

Barracker - I’ve just checked my emails and I have one saying that I need to confirm my identity by sending a copy of photo ID within 48 hrs or my donation will be refunded.

They can fuck the fuck off. I didn’t use another persons name so clearly not trying to defraud or impersonate someone. I would be interested to see if all “joke” names on all gofundme accounts are refunded or just this account. I’m tempted to make a random donation as Mr Blobby or somesuch and on another account and see if I get the same message.

Glitterypinksoap · 19/01/2018 14:23

On Twitter these are being termed as 'malicious contributions'.

Oh for an eyeroll emoticon.

Glitterypinksoap · 19/01/2018 14:25

Belligerent did you use your name or anonymous?

BarrackerBarmer · 19/01/2018 14:28

WTF!

BelligerentGardenPixies do you mean they are threatening to return your second donation if you don't send ID??? Have they placed you on some kind of a naughty list for future donations and expect you to have less anonymity than other people ON A CAMPAIGN WHERE DONORS ARE BEING THREATENED WITH EXPULSION FROM POLITICAL PARTIES FOR DONATING?!!!

Or does this relate to your original donation?

Can you clarify?

BelligerentGardenPixies · 19/01/2018 14:31

No so far only the first donation, but I only just re donated so let’s see what happens with that one.

TheHallouminati · 19/01/2018 14:34

I was thinking about this yesterday. I've already donated in my real name (a common name) but I wish I'd donated in a clever way. Would there be a way to donate in the following names:

Costof MAP £35
Costof HRT £8.60
Costof Tampons £10

Or would those names get rejected? Just to make a point about how there are issues (that are never dealt with) out there that affect women which transwomen have no understanding of.

Ekphrasis · 19/01/2018 14:38

From Jennifer James on twitter:

BREAKING: We have had information sent to us claiming that the Labour party have allowed a man on an all-women shortlist to be an MP and stand at the next general election. The man claims to be a woman but @UKLabour* have not asked for a GRC to confirm his legal sex status.

Source has just told me it's not a GRC the Labour party needs to check sex of candidate but the birth certificate. A GRC enables trans women to change the sex on their birth certificate which makes them female in law.

This means @uklabour must ask ALL candidates for elected positions to show a birth certificate. Meaning there will be no awkward questions, no 'outing', no public outcry, no unfairness against women and no discrimination. I had to provide my birth certificate for teaching. nbd.*

TheHallouminati · 19/01/2018 14:39

Or you know, to really hit home how gov policy hits women (which most single parents are) harder than men in many ways

CMS appfee £20
Payand collectfee £xx

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 19/01/2018 14:39

This is very very sinister stuff

BelligerentGardenPixies · 19/01/2018 14:40

The - I think it’s likely to get rejected.

Akire · 19/01/2018 14:41

That’s just silly! Surely as long as credit card details matched the name on card you can appear anon or however you like.
