Apologies in advance as this is Big Brother related. So watched I clip of the above and was wondering about people's views. As a R&B fan I know that Genuwine is a heterosexual male with, previously married and several children. He goes on BB assuming for the money and has advanced on by trans woman India Willoughby then makes advances towards him and he rejects "her" . She then storms off offended due to this and it is implied he is transphobic as 1. he doesn't want to kiss her and 2. Doesn't recognise her as female. Now I have lots of views about this but found it interesting that apparently this straight male Genuwine has no right to choose of state he is not sexually interested in someone who essentially was a male and is likely to be torn down as homophobic. Ironic given the current topics of sexual harassment that women are rightfully raising. Not sure what I'm asking really just thought it was interesting

Who goes on reality tv expecting to hook up anyway? (Yeah yeah I know there are entire shows built around that idea... but still... bleurgh).

SisterMoonshine · 10/01/2018 07:42

I wonder if they'll make sure India's out soon, as India's damaging the image of trans.

I think it's been fascinating. India is the living embodiment of the transactivists we've had the misfortune to deal with on here and twitter. Doesn't look so good in the real world, does it?

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 10/01/2018 08:11

I'd have thought India giving that reason would just about guarantee Genuwine's safety.

Scabbersley · 10/01/2018 08:19

Yes I think so.

Courtney Act on the other hand (although I realise drag isn't trans) seems a lovely intelligent guy

Scabbersley · 10/01/2018 08:20

I'm the same age as India and a real woman, and I can confidently say I wouldn't expect Genuwine to be interested in me.

Anniethinggose · 10/01/2018 09:39

India is openly transphobic. She says she does not represent or feel represented by the trans community. She dismisses and rubbishes LGBT rights.
Yet she would like Ginuwine to be viewed as somehow 'phobic' towards her.
The problem is, she views herself as female, and would like to forget any transition she made to be able to call herself female.
She's also ageist and anti-feminist. A complete bigot really.

Anniethinggose · 10/01/2018 09:43

The 'under 16' comments didn't happen. India made it up when she nominated him to make him look bad.

mmm... Hmm

It is interesting that so many middle aged men who transition believe they become 'young' 'hot' women when they do - it seems to be part of the appeal, the chance for a fresh start, be young again, etc. I wonder if India has a bit of that going on - seeing themself as a younger, hotter (and female) version of Jonathan Willoughby. Hence saying 'under 16', because India deludedly imagines themself to be somewhere between 17 and 21, and to be rejected on the basis of age means somewhere below that.

And to be fair, I think Genuwine is a creepy lech and I find it a bit chilling the way he is mocking and questioning Ashley James' natural, un-jaded, youthful hopes for the future as a mother. I remember older men being like that with me when I was that age- trying to dampen my enthusiasm and put me on the back foot, questioning myself, with their wizened cynicism - as a tactic to get into my knickers. Tossers.

busyboysmum · 10/01/2018 10:04

Guardian that is so interesting. It's the new midlife crisis!

I was wondering what these middle aged men were thinking identifying their way into being middle aged women - now it all makes sense. They are treated as teenagers in the trans community, I've heard a few say that now including Courtney/Shane who explained it to the lads that way last night.

Quimby · 10/01/2018 10:05

“I've said before on here, but nobody agreed with me. I reckon that most heterosexual men already get it to a certain extent.
Go ask any bloke in the pub if a transwoman is a woman and you'll see what their answer is.”

Tbf that’s what I’d notice among my friends.
All of them would be almost completely in sync with the views expressed on these boards when it comes to trans issues in private.

In public I think they just keep scthum as they’ve been told on a host of liberal issues that their opinions aren’t important etc and just think the potential for a backlash or finding themselves on the wrong side of the issue makes it too risky to voice their opinions in any forceful way publicly.

I also think that there’s a feeling that they’re a part of a significant ailment majority and that it’s only an incredibly loud minority who actually believe in any of this nonsense

busyboysmum · 10/01/2018 10:11

I agree Quimby - I think that is the hill transactivism will die on TBH.

I think it is really cruel to be telling young boys that they can be a woman because you are making them into someone who will have a very limited appeal. As India is also finding out.

You can bring in all the legislation you like but you can't force people to go against nature. And straight men are attracted to real women. There is no getting away from that.

GuardianLions · 10/01/2018 10:12

Yes, and if you think about it - the male mid-life crisis is often about life not having had the heroic arc they expected.

So if they transition - they can compete in sports with women, young enough to compete as professional/semi-professional athletes (younger than 35 I reckon) and actually get trophies and medals. Something they weren't able to do in 'life #1'.

They also get to hang around with teenage girls who say - "you look gorgeous babes" - something that would never happen as a middle age, bog-standard, bloke.

Also I've read accounts of men wanting to transition when balding sets in - they want the hormones to stop the encroaching symptoms of male aging.

GuardianLions · 10/01/2018 10:13

Sorry, my last comment related to It's the new midlife crisis!

busyboysmum · 10/01/2018 10:27

It's all very interesting Guardian. I have often wondered why there aren't the hundreds of middle aged women suddenly deciding they are men.

Njordsgrrrl · 10/01/2018 10:29

India is doing a terrific job of peak-transing the lads on Pie and Bovril. I've always thought this would happen when men started to notice it might affect them too.

There's a bit of typical bantz / jokes but the realisation that, "wait I'm a bigot if i don't want a GF who used to have a penis Shock" followed by, "well if the GRA comes in, said GF may well still have one" is beautiful.

And we get a mention Grin

You don't need to have had surgery now to be legally recognised as a transwoman.

I think India is being massively shown up by Shane who is the epitome of how to talk about complex Gender issues. he is doing it with genuine respect, understanding and calm. He explains things clearly and comes at it from a point of trust in whoever he is talking to. India seems intent to distrust everyone's views towards her. She's doing a terrible job of the representation she says she wants to give.

Njordsgrrrl · 10/01/2018 10:50

Good point ArcheryAnnie. I may pop over and give them the good news.

AngryAttackKittens · 10/01/2018 11:14

India seems to be so set on peak transing the nation that you have to wonder if the team behind CBB set things up that way on purpose. Surely they interview people beforehand and must have realized that he was likely to go into meltdown mode the moment any of the women disagreed with him. Adding Shane to the mix seems to have been specifically designed to provoke conflict, and it was inevitable that most of the other housemates would like him better since he's funny and cute and far more personable than India, which they had to have known would drive India up the wall.

The reaction shots of Ginuwine's face every time he encounters some TRA talking point for the first time are almost worth watching for, and I generally think Big Brother is about as exciting as watching paint dry. Given the overall tone of the responses on Facebook etc the general public isn't buying it either.

AngryAttackKittens · 10/01/2018 11:18

"It is interesting that so many middle aged men who transition believe they become 'young' 'hot' women when they do - it seems to be part of the appeal, the chance for a fresh start, be young again, etc."

Ever notice how many of them call themselves girls even if they're middle aged? They don't want to be women their own age at all.
