Apologies in advance as this is Big Brother related. So watched I clip of the above and was wondering about people's views. As a R&B fan I know that Genuwine is a heterosexual male with, previously married and several children. He goes on BB assuming for the money and has advanced on by trans woman India Willoughby then makes advances towards him and he rejects "her" . She then storms off offended due to this and it is implied he is transphobic as 1. he doesn't want to kiss her and 2. Doesn't recognise her as female. Now I have lots of views about this but found it interesting that apparently this straight male Genuwine has no right to choose of state he is not sexually interested in someone who essentially was a male and is likely to be torn down as homophobic. Ironic given the current topics of sexual harassment that women are rightfully raising. Not sure what I'm asking really just thought it was interesting

I had to stop reading about it on Twitter when I saw Katie Hopkins' tweets. The cognitive dissonance of agreeing with her on ANY issue is enough to short circuit my brain.

IsaSchmisa · 09/01/2018 16:26

I can well believe some of it might be scripted, but considering how many people damage their careers by being cast as the bad guy, unless they're paid a massive amount then it isn't all. People just wouldn't.

What I think is more likely is that producers have an idea of the storylines they want before going in, then try to mould events to fit that and shoot the script accordingly. Probably more so with CBB as they and the public have more pre-existing knowledge about the contestants.

Ekphrasis · 09/01/2018 16:30

I wonder if IW would go with a transman? If she'd really go with them? They at least would understand where she was coming from.

UpABitLate · 09/01/2018 16:42

I've not seen it but I read the article and it's pretty shocking.

  1. No-one HAS to get off with anyone, no reasons are needed
  2. If India is 5 years older than the bloke I just googled for a pic of, and I've seen India, then he's a bit out of India's league surely? Trans thing to one side, agree with the poster who said that very few 50 yo not-increadibly-beautiful women would expect a positive response from trying to pull him! I mean, come on. That shows a certain level of delusion even if nothing else did!
  3. Slagging off a man for putting some makeup on? Hating the drag queen? Homophobic and insistent on strict gender roles, yep that's what people have been saying for yonks about all this
  4. A man putting on a dress and mimicking a woman upsets India and no-one else would understand? What about women you dimwit, loads of women hate drag because they see it as a pisstaking caricature of women... Erm. Mind-boggling.

Maybe I need to start watching it Grin

UpABitLate · 09/01/2018 16:45

CBB they are in there locked up together 24/7 I don't think they script or need to, they push people with the tasks and the diary room and sit back. The people they choose are deliberately chosen to make good viewing together and no-one can remember / act 24/7, the cameras are carefully hidden too.
I don't think it's "scrpited" in that sense at all. These people have massive egos, many of them, and IRL few people challenge them because they can avoid them instead Grin

DodoPatrol · 09/01/2018 16:51

Fair enough! Let's say, then, that it's carefully selected and edited to tell the stories the producers think will stir up most talk.

UpABitLate · 09/01/2018 17:08

Yes for sure.

So if they are not showing India in a good light that is very interesting indeed.

ludog · 09/01/2018 17:18

I'd say they'd be hard pushed to find anything positive to use to show IW in a good light TBH

DodoPatrol · 09/01/2018 17:40

Ah, you can say pretty much anything with a bit of editing... have you seen this guy?

I was going to say the same thing ludog.

The one excellent bit to come out of that episode was the chap, Andrew is it? Who was 'dragged up' by the drag queen, Courtney.

He said I'm a heterosexual man, from the north, where I go down the pub and drink a pint with ' Dave' and 'Dan', but I'm a bit camp and this is great for exploring my masculinity.

He was open, candid, funny and totally relaxed. The pair of them had a right laugh with their sticky tape and eyebrow glue.

That is truly gender busting. And absolutely no threat to women, whatsoever.

I've been on the fence about drag queens because I too sometimes see it as parody. But Courtney doesn't seem to have a piss taking bone in his body. It genuinely seemed like appreciative homage to femininity.

And drag is far, far less of a threat which ever way you look at it.

India is digging theirself ever deeper into hole that I don't think they will emerge from without help.

I can't help wondering whether or not India thought that transitioning would solve all their problems. But they have only created new ones. The massive reduction in their dating pool seeming to be the worst.

rosy71 · 09/01/2018 18:36

*Interestingly, despite attempting to mollify India, Andrew's angry response uses language more Föten aimed at a man than a woman.
""In the garden, Andrew ranted: “Dickhead. Fking do a good thing, apologise, take the fking make-up off and you still get fking victimised and shit. Fk you, you prick.”".

I thought that. Those were insults a man would direct at another man. They'd call a woman something different.

UpABitLate · 09/01/2018 18:48

Agree about the gendered nature of the insults. Men do not call women "pricks" at least not on any regular basis.

LoafEater · 09/01/2018 18:56

The dating pool situation is the real kicker for people like IW. Straight men won't shag IW because she is actually a man. Gay men won't because IW tries to look like a women and they like men. Straight women won't because IW looks like a woman and lesbians won't because IW has a male body and maybe a dick I dunno!

This is why the likes of IW is so bloody grumpy.

DeleteOrDecay · 09/01/2018 19:04

I don't think IW still has his dick, I'm sure she was talking about how it all works on last nights episode. It was a bit TMI for me.

Deep down they all know she is a man and are playing along as it's the PC thing to do.

DeleteOrDecay · 09/01/2018 19:05

Got my pronouns mixed up then, whoops.

LangCleg · 09/01/2018 19:15

The dating pool situation is the real kicker for people like IW.

Yes. And it is rotten. I do feel for people if they think the chances of meeting a lifetime partner are close to zero.

But you know - it's not my fault. And gay men and lesbians have coped since forever with a drastically reduced dating pool compared to hets without calling anyone bigoted for not shagging them.

IsaSchmisa · 09/01/2018 19:46

And honestly, even setting aside the trans issue, GW is so completely out of IWs league. He's younger, was incredible looking in his prime and is still in pretty good nick now, rich, and much more famous than her. If he were going to date a trans woman it would likely be someone like Janet Mock- I know she's married but that's Ginuwine's level. India is an average looking 51 year old with no particular wealth or star power. Being trans is one on a long list of reasons!

GuardianLions · 09/01/2018 21:04

You know what - all this ageist misogyny on this thread is pissing me off - Genuwine is no spring chicken either.

The reason India acted in this way and Genuwine reacted in his way is because India is male, deranged and not attractive to Genuwine.

I also can actually imagine a 51 year old woman (or any aged woman) coming onto Genuwine in the same way if she had a serious personality disorder. (I also agree with the posters upthread talking about white entitlement to black bodies too) .However a healthy, normal woman would never act with that sense of entitlement. India is wrong in the head and has male/white entitlement to boot.

IsaSchmisa · 09/01/2018 21:10

Ginuwine would hardly be likely to be up for it with an average looking 51 year old non trans woman, though.

I mean, there's a conversation to be had here about ageism and older men's attitudes to younger women as opposed to vice versa. Sure. But the fact is that he's currently sniffing round one of the younger women (and to be fair he's aged better than most).

80sQueen · 09/01/2018 22:39

I also agree with the "white entitlement to black bodies" which is still prevalent and I thing there was definitely an element of this. India probably thinking how dare you not like me, hoe dare you reject me. Like as of Genuwine an adult heterosexual male has no right what's so ever to decide who he should interact with, be attracted and therefore removing his right to object and reject sexual advance. Also Genuwine as a Black male would have been aware that he would need to respond passively without any frustration, or anger as he would quickly be labelled the aggressive, angry Black male and transphobic to boot.

Babybauble · 09/01/2018 22:46

I'm confused, I watched about 40 minutes of tonight's and Indias recall of the conversation with Genuwine is different to the media version. I'm sure she said he turned her down for not looking under 16 or something?! I only caught a glimpse as was distracted, can anyone clarify? Thanks

Datun · 09/01/2018 23:17

As far as I recall he turned her down with a sort of embarrassed grin. But didn't mention age.

DeleteOrDecay · 10/01/2018 00:12

I thought India's reason for nominating Genuwine was pathetic. Not everyone is attracted to everyone, people are allowed to say 'no thanks' without being beaten over the head. Shouldn't have been allowed to use that as a reason for nominating him imo.

It's like saying "I'm nominating x because she likes apples but I only like pears".
