Thank you. I think I am trying to separate the layers of my objection in my own mind and I'm struggling. I feel angry and upset that someone who is supposed to be a spokesperson for women is in fact solely a spokesperson for the trans movement. I am also upset that someone with so little experience has been given such an important role. I keep tripping up in my own mind though as I am concerned some of my feelings come from prejudice, and that is not the sort of person I want to be. I am not as eloquent as many on this thread, but I'm trying to work it all out (and failing).

RedToothBrush · 07/12/2017 08:58

Stormwhale in a word, yes.

It would go a long way to admit differences and acknowledge the experience of others as being equal and valid. Rather than doing the exact opposite and inflaming concerns.

My experience and feelings are irrelevant and not valid according to the language the Lily consistently uses.

So much of this comes down to respect and trust and the understanding that proper safeguarding is part of that structure.

Respect has to be earned and broken trust has to be fixed by careful sensitivity. Safeguarding is crucial to doing that, not just for women, but also for the trans community itself and for the families of those who are trans.

If you don't demonstrate you understand these issues and instead try and close down any discussion of them, why the fuck should any women accept any individual who claims to represent their interests.

Lily doesn't get to this bare minimum standard.

Instead, I just see the exact opposite happening. It's damaging to everyone really. Not just women. It undermines the integrity of democracy.

Mxyzptlk · 07/12/2017 09:05

Lesbians used to class themselves as "butch" or "femme". They don't do that any more, I don't think.
Trans people like Lily seem to be stuck in that mindset, partly because society can't just accept that someone is, for instance, a man in a dress.

RedToothBrush · 07/12/2017 09:06

Would I want even a 'good' trans woman in the role of a women's officer?

If I'm honest, not really. No. Because it's about sex not gender ultimately.

But I think that's a different question to whether I'd feel differently if Lily demonstrated giving a fuck about women's rights and had a basic level of competence. And it's not just about Lily, it's also about the thought process and vetting that's gone on within the Labour Party.

ErmagherdWerfWerfs · 07/12/2017 09:07

Does he really think that’s how a professional, intelligent woman would dress for a serious tv interview?? 😮

Fekko · 07/12/2017 09:18

No. He is Lilly, that all. He doesn't care about the actual role (probably not even read the job description) or issues.

It's all a very large fabulous ego trip and the Labour Party head bummers ought to be bloody ashamed at facilitating this.

They will quickly realise that the time Lilly is supposedly addressing 'women's issues' will be spent by Lilly tweeting, arranging parties and plotting the downfall of women who disagrees with him. His boss will spend a lot of time ego-wrangling and clearing up the mess of threatening tweets, inapprolanguage md behaviour and complaints from the public of lack of any actual work being done. And do you know what - they will be shitting themselves because any trips to HR, slaps on the wrist or chastisement will be met by a wail of indignance. Tweets and the inevitable suicide/death threats.

It's going to be a bloody circus.

Terrylene · 07/12/2017 09:19

The pink hoodie seems to be a uniform/brand.

Fekko · 07/12/2017 09:21

You couldn't pay me to wear a pink hoody!

Lancelottie · 07/12/2017 09:28

Lily is almost uniquely disqualified for this role.

An adult woman could do it.
A 19-year-old girl would have some of the relevant life experience and could grow into it.
A transman would have insight from a different angle.
An adult man or an intelligent non-trans 19-year-old boy could do some of it, if prepared to read, listen and look at statistics on how and why women are statistically disadvantaged by their biology.

But a dimwit who thinks biology is irrelevant and makes that the main point of their campaign? How on earth is that the best candidate for this post?

Fekko · 07/12/2017 09:30

How did he even get into the position? Who is sponsoring him?

Lancelottie · 07/12/2017 09:31

'How will you start to address the challenges faced by women, in healthcare, in the workplace, in being taken more seriously politically, and in maintaining an income while childrearing, Lily?'

'Errm, they should all, like, wear more pink and be nicer to me?'

woman11017 · 07/12/2017 09:31

pink hoodie
Less obvious than a handmaid's bonnet?

He seems to be performing a very odd pastiche of a male version of femininity.

One of the central old school tenets of feminism is that the personal is political, it isn't just 'personal'.

Is this TA malarkey particularly peculiar to brexit britain and trump US?

Are there any EU or non EU posters who've seen the sam thing happening in their countries?

ChattyLion · 07/12/2017 09:32

stormwhale I think if someone flat out doesn’t have the right skills and experience or intentions and attitude for x job, (like woman’s officer) they wouldn’t be reasonable to expect to get it. And whoever continues them in post is not managing that post properly.
If they were appointed to y job (like LGBT officer) and when in office took the attitude that they only wanted to represent one part of the constituency (T) then they should not be doing that job either. Which is why I think Labour are massively culpable for facilitating this.

Secondly your question includes basically ‘should there be some protected jobs for women which a man (regardless of his ability) should not be able to apply for or hold’?

I think yes, until patriarchy and misogyny cease to exist, sex-based eligibility is needed to support women doing the protected jobs and the interests of the women she works with (or women she works for).

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/12/2017 09:32

Leaving aside the trans bit, Lily simply isn't articulate enough and experienced enough for that post.

This is all wrong.

Lancelottie · 07/12/2017 09:32

'And they shouldn't be older than me, because that makes them, like, irrelevant and not feminine and on the wrong side of history?'

whazzy · 07/12/2017 09:35

I just want to add that Madigan"s Instagram account is vapid.

Pictures of her at channel 4 and a picture of supportive tweet from a MP keeping the bench warm for her but mainly it is full of her in dresses. Madigan mentions her favourite dress .. yes really. Some fawning over Ed Milland following her.

Got me thinking Madigan is just after the likes and some warped kind of fame. It is all about Madigan.

I get the impression that Madigan still lives at home and from what madigan has said her family are not perceived to be support of her being trans but that madigan still lives at home. I really really feel for the family.

Got me thinking that at her age I had been looking after a father who had terminal cancer - a mother with severe disabilities and was working part time and had been since I was 13 as a care home worker (grew up outside of the UK) surrounded by low paid carers who were all women and all worked such long hours for such little pay.

How can Madigan have any hope of truly representing women. Women like the hard working care workers.

What a load of crap.

That pink hoodie and the erasure of women.

Don't think I can vote Labour now.

Ereshkigal · 07/12/2017 09:40

So do I. They'll probably get death threats.

woman11017 · 07/12/2017 09:47

They'll probably get death threats
From whom? We don't do that sort of thing.
Unless false flaggers set it up.
Think the funders/ enablers of this are becoming a bit too obvious.

Ereshkigal · 07/12/2017 09:49

I mean from the TAs. If they are not supportive of poor little Lily's trans identity.

Thehairthebod · 07/12/2017 09:56

If Lily was a regular 19 year old, boy or girl, being that inarticulate with that level of naivety and just general, well, crapness there is no way they would get anywhere near the position she has. Labour should be fucking ashamed of themselves.

I keep comparing her to Mhari Black who has such passion, such charisma, and even though I don't always agree with her, truly believes in the things she talks about. Lily Madigan is just having a laugh and rather enjoying having control over women. Oh, but that's not a male trait at all oh no, she is all woman.

Can you imagine her as an MP?
Constituent: I am really worried about the maternity services at our local hospital.
Lily: Please stop rubbing your exclusionary cis privilege in my face. At least you get to use these services. You have triggered me, I can't do this any more.
Constituent: Oh, um, thanks for your help Lily you are really inspirational and all that.

Thehairthebod · 07/12/2017 10:02

Does he really think that’s how a professional, intelligent woman would dress for a serious tv interview??

I know, she has no interest in taking this role seriously at all. It's all about 'solidarity' and luffly fluffy photos with her buddies.

cremedelashite · 07/12/2017 10:04

Is the transactivists position to no platform any statement that transwomen are not women or to question a trans woman's right to be in any female position or space because it is hurtful and damaging to the vulnerable transwomen?

So no debate if you have concerns? Are there any reasonable trans platforms that are looking to work with concerned women on these issues instead of labelling them as 'phobes? It's a bit like brexit- people are labelled rascists, which shuts down reasonable debate of issues and then we end up with a cluster fuck of proposed policy.

KathyBeale · 07/12/2017 10:06

This was very interesting. I thought Cathy Newman interviewed Lily really well - letting her speak which, in my opinion, is the best way to let someone tie themselves up in knots.

I have many thoughts on this, but the one that struck me most of all is about Lily's appearance. She's not very feminine, is she? Most transwomen seem to be all about the appearance and the overtly feminine dress, and the make-up etc.

As far as I could tell, Lily wasn't wearing make-up, she'd not even plucked her eyebrows, she wasn't dressed in particularly feminine clothes. I couldn't care less what women or transwomen wear but I just thought it was interesting.

I work in the media, and generally speaking when a female guest is asked to go on a TV show (disclaimer here in that I'm not sure if it happens on the news but it definitely does on shows like Lorraine, or This Morning), they send a photo of themselves to the researcher (before they say yes or no), and they are also talked through what to wear. My boss, who often does TV appearances, has never been asked to do this. He has, occasionally, been asked what he's wearing (if it's a last-minute appearance) and then been asked to change the colour of his shirt but that's as far as it goes for men. I wonder if any of this happened for Lily?

Lancelottie · 07/12/2017 10:07

Having seen some of the level of gloaty goadiness in some of this kid's tweets, there is no way I would personally want to trust them with anything remotely personal.

Lancelottie · 07/12/2017 10:08

Oops, too many 'personals' there.
