Red

Yes. Lilly is a parody of womanhood (girlhood). Small, physically slight, emotions all on the surface. Vulnerable.

But no to 'knowing fully what she is doing unless she was intending to also come across as utterly incompetent at the same time. Whatever would be the benefit of that?

Because he has his ideas set on aiding the trans cause. If he went in there all head strong and assertive etc then no one would buy the helpless startled bunny rabbit trans people just fearing the their lives so badly women let them in the loos.

He knows how to get what he wants and this frightened clueless caricature of a helpless "woman" is how he probably gets it.

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/12/2017 07:04

And besides he's said some awful things on Twitter

He's trying to back track and deny and blame other people. No one would believe him about any of it unless he followed through with the "dozy woman" act

Beachcomber · 07/12/2017 07:28

I have no words.

Thehairthebod · 07/12/2017 07:47

Wow, just watched it:

The pink sweater, the meek and mild vulnerable demeanour, what a great representation for women. Compare her to Mhairi Black!

How many times did she say 'people like me'? She is supposed to be representing all women. 'Me, me, me, it's all about meeeeeeeeeeeeeee!'

How the fuck does she think she will be an MP, she was so ridiculously inarticulate.

Also, it seems that these people pick and choose when to be a 'woman' and when to be 'trans'. So apparently 'trans women are women' and Lily is a 'women's officer' because she is irrefutably female and you are not allowed to to debate that otherwise you will be blocked/no platformed.

But when it comes to Lily getting attention for being 'the first trans MP' Lily is 'trans'. After all these days you don't get much attention when being elected just for being a woman do you?

Also how is someone who believes in 'no platforming' a suitable candidate for being an MP. Doesn't that defeat the whole object of, um, democracy?

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 07/12/2017 07:58

They just want to be a women’s officer to validate themselves as a woman, not to represent women.

MrGHardy · 07/12/2017 08:07

Well why do you think Lily is still on twitter? Cries about abuse and how she can't take it, still posts and revels in the "Solidsrity with Lily" teeets. It's a monumental ego trip.

What gets me more and more is how insultingly gender stereotyping the trans agenda actually is. I'm a girl so I have to wear pink and be meek. Trace that all the way to "I like dresses and hate boy things so I feel I'm a girl so I must be a girl". Exact opposite of the otherwise gender neutral agenda they supposedly support.

ChattyLion · 07/12/2017 08:11

Labour has been appallingly opportunistic and insultingly tokenistic in their thinking about trans people AND women in allowing someone so clearly ill-equipped to successfully apply to this Women’s Officer role. And then for the party at the highest national levels to fete them in post shows such low, patronising expectations.

As PP have said, Labour are seriously neglectful in terms of the outcome for Lily on a personal level. Lily seems to expect to be given the job, but not to then be questioned or judged (on her own clearly stated plans and demonstrable abilities) actually do the elected role she occupies.

If I turned up at either of my paid or voluntary jobs and cheerfully didnt bother doing my job description or my job title because I felt it better and more important not to do them, but just to ‘represent’ something while remaining in those jobs (by wearing my own clothes or some make up Hmm)..) I wonder what my bosses would do next?

MentholBreeze · 07/12/2017 08:11

Just watched it. Lilly has the smirk. The one that kids get when they tell a copper they can't touch them, or a parent that they'll report them for something - the one where that kid thinks they have power over the adults.

If Lilly won't engage with women, won't articulate the differences in experience (no matter how 'valid' they might all be), then he can't represent those women, those women's experiences, and clearly therefore isn't qualified for the role.

RedToothBrush · 07/12/2017 08:14

Yep. Insults to women don't count. Women are bigotted for being insulted and not taking it.

I've had ten years of this mental bullshit.

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/12/2017 08:23

Yy menthol

There was definately that look at the end.

It's all an act

Ereshkigal · 07/12/2017 08:27

Well, this thread has been helpful in identifying sources of rampant TERF-ery on Mumsnet.

That's what you take from all this? How gullible you are.

Stormwhale · 07/12/2017 08:27

I have been stewing over this all night. I wondered if I could ask a question.

Say instead of the, frankly, ridiculous performance last night, Lily had come out and stated that she knows she does not have the experience of a biological female, but that she wants to be the voice needed to stand up for women across the country. Lily had stated that his/her experience growing up was difficult, but different from many of the women she is representing. Lily had then gone on to say she had spent many hours listening to women who had been raped, sexually assaulted, intimidated, lived with domestic violence, struggled to access safe abortion, fought to receive the same recognition as their male colleagues... the list goes on, and was putting her every effort into learning from their experience. If she had then stated that she believed every voice was important, and she would not stand by and allow women to be silenced/no platformed. If she had then said that although she was a trans woman, she wanted to fight for the needs of every woman, and to be the voice that represents the true issues faced by women, would you feel differently?

Thesqueezermustghost · 07/12/2017 08:35

I was thinking Lily was rather smirky....could be nerves, could be enjoying the attention. What gets me though is how devoid of politics the whole thing is.....like the politics is purely in the act of gaining the role.

Goatgirly · 07/12/2017 08:40

Ironically I'm pretty sure that if there was a trans officer role and Lily was appointed to represent trans people, there'd still be an outcry, because Lily is simply not up to the role, whomever Lily is representing, and everyone knows that. In the role of women's officer though it's more about sticking two fingers up at women everywhere and seeing how far they can go.

Fekko · 07/12/2017 08:42

Storm - I'd think great, he's got his head screwed on and is thinking about issues. BUT still, how does a 19 year old man lacking empathy with those he supposedly represents think that he can even begin to have the experiences of education to do such a role? He does not deserve the role nor does he appear to be equipped to do or even interested in the actual job.

He will get bored and overwhelmed, flounce off (crying about bullies) and try to launch a Celeb career (dancing on ice, I'm a celebrity...). Sadly with no whit, intelligence, humour or charm this will become a sideshow.

Fekko · 07/12/2017 08:42

Bad grammar and typing but you get the gist.

Backingvocals · 07/12/2017 08:43

No stormwhale I wouldn’t. Because he is a man. This delusional talk that Lily is a different type of woman needs to be called out.

Rachel Dolezal very sincerely thought she could think of herself as black and represent black people. She took roles for black people. When it was revealed that she was white the black community were rightly livid that she had decided she knew what blackness meant. We should be just as clear. If anything this situation is worse because of the biological cause for women’s oppression which TRAs trample all over.

Datun · 07/12/2017 08:43

Stormwhale

What you are asking is if Lily was a completely different person would it be okay?

If Lily, a 19-year-old boy, was unaccountably not only a feminist, but was bursting with the need to help women. Who, despite being a 19-year-old boy, had a magical empathy with women, not through experience, but by osmosis.

If Lily’s entire life experience had been completely different to that of any other 19-year-old boy.

I suspect what you’re asking is if he wasn’t trans, it would it be okay?

Trying to separate out the layers of objection?

But, it’s more magical thinking. A man should not be holding position of a women’s officer.

Quite apart from the lack of experience, he’s taking the place of a woman.

And that’s not on.

MrGHardy · 07/12/2017 08:44

Well, certainly a lot more new, critical voices on twitter since this interview. Maybe wider public is seeing this and seeing it for the charade that it is.

MarrowWang · 07/12/2017 08:44

If she had then said that although she was a trans woman, she wanted to fight for the needs of every woman, and to be the voice that represents the true issues faced by women, would you feel differently?

If Lily was not completely focused on male/trans people, denying biology, threatening to doxx people, passive aggressive, a liar, and so on..then yes I imagine I would feel differently. If Lily was a completely different person with a completely different attitude.

However, if Lily was not so self centred and entitled, Lily would never have put themselves forward for such a role to begin with. So its a bit moot.

Badgerthebodger · 07/12/2017 08:48

Stormwhale I would still feel that a Women’s Officer post should go to a woman. However if Lily had gone down that route at any point I would probably say give Lily a chance

It’s a bit like saying would we accept someone like Miranda Yardley in the role. I probably would, but it’s a moot point because she understands how insulting it would be to women to take a post like that. I think if you had the humility and empathy required to succeed as a trans woman in a Women’s Officer post then you would not want to take the post.

iseenodust · 07/12/2017 08:48

Stig "Going on a bit of a tangent, I would like to see trans people have some manner of political icon." - There is a high-profile choice.
www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/oct/23/eddie-izzard-champions-diversity-in-bid-to-join-labour-nec

Also Lily could have gone for the LGBT officer role ad focussed on LGBT rights.

IndominusRex · 07/12/2017 08:52

I'd like to see a mocked up labour poster featuring dolezal "introducing our new BAME officer"
