She's taking a Twitter break for her mental health because of the level of abuse she's receiving. She's a teenage girl, FFS - and even if you think she's a teenage boy, in what world does a 19 year old deserve this amount of bullying?

I hope you're all fucking happy now.

OK, thanks for the extra info on Lucy Meadows (the Littlejohn column was disgusting, though - and Lucy Meadows wasn't doing anyone any harm).
I'm actually more concerned for LM than I was (I have very little patience for self-righteous self-promoting teenage 'politicians'). I think it's quite possibly someone's actual intention that LM cracks under the pressure (which very few 19-year-olds would be able to cope with, anyway - and one who clearly has a lot of issues is going to find it even harder) and makes at least some sort of token attempt at self harm - and then the TRAs have a proper martyr. So steps are likely to be taken to ensure that the fuss continues.

vicious and abusive online bullying

I am sorry, what? They say that and pretty much the only example they have is "misgendering"? Any person who has ever played online games will have gotten stuff like "kill yourself", "get cancer" and gamergate, women get rape threats (I follow some accounts on instagram that show screenshots of men being rejected on apps like tinder, the level of hatred they display is astounding), or very pertinent to this example the absolutely vile abuse lesbians receive from "trans lesbians" and these are just some examples.

cafeaulaitpourvous · 06/12/2017 17:43

Lily Madigan is an old fashioned patsy.....

Datun · 06/12/2017 17:49

You'd see how little you'd have to do ("he's not a woman") to be called as a hateful, vicious bully.

Which is exactly why this needs public debate. When people realise that the hate, vitriol and bullying is nothing more than stating biology and why it’s important, the whole thing collapses like a house of cards.

BlindYeo · 06/12/2017 17:51

I have just read the original Richard Littlejohn article on Lucy Meadows. Having been reading the threads on this board including the trans widows one, I think Littlejohn made some valid points. How far should others be obliged to go to validate someone's else's wish/fantasy/mental disorder?

OlennasWimple · 06/12/2017 18:40

Thanks for that article Anlaf. Full of ageist shit, but hey ho.

It must suck being them. They just think so backwards—it makes no sense in my head.

^^ This is Lily's views on Mumsnet users. Guess what Lil, it doesn't suck being me, I am actually fabulous.

Fekko · 06/12/2017 18:42

He needs to learn to speak English properly. I don't think much must make sense in the dim little head. Although the ideas do have a lot of room on there.

OlennasWimple · 06/12/2017 18:45

Oh, and I made it back from Reddit, where the most I could find was a couple of posts suggesting that UK Redditors who were pissed off with the TRA agenda should come onto MN to help work out practical steps that women can take.

Hardly a smoking gun of conspiracy Hmm

Ereshkigal · 06/12/2017 18:46

^ linking to a nonexistent website called rape.com/savillesapprentice.^

It didn't actually link to "a non existent website." It linked to a rape charity. Tee hee.

Fekko · 06/12/2017 18:46

You smell of Reddit...

Ereshkigal · 06/12/2017 18:49

Is it Reddit Gender Cynical where loads of trans activists hang out to discuss things posted on Reddit Gender Critical? I'm extremely cynical about "gender". Maybe I should head over there Grin

LongWeek · 06/12/2017 18:50

lily madigan concerns me a lot. They are clearly not well suited (or too young) to be in a position such as women's officer or councillor. And all the chat about wanting to be an MP, yet constantly whinging on Twitter about getting upset. Honestly- attention seeking!

If you stand for elected office, you get abuse. That is a fact of life. You HAVE to be thick-skinned. You cannot throw your toys out of the pram all the time because people are critical. And you cannot ignore people because you don't like them.
If lily was elected as councillor or MP, they would have to act on behalf of people who they totally disagreed with.
Someone up-threAd said this earlier:
'Members of parliament have to represent the interests of ALL their constituents regardless of whether they share their political views or whether they show the 'correct level of respect'.
I work for (& am married to) an MP. He has recovered death threats on the past from constituents (fairly standard).
And then months later the same person who threatened him asks for help with benefits- should the MP help? They are still a constituent. DH is still their MP. He cannot just 'block' people like on Twitter.

Lily is getting very upset about people 'misgendering'. Lily needs to grow up, toughen up or get out of politics.

Where on earth are you getting this from? I used TERF previously as I just thought it was an acronym x

How very disingenuous that sounds.

Fekko · 06/12/2017 18:55

Using words when you don't know what they mean? Oh silly Lilly. No one is buying that!

Gingernaut · 06/12/2017 19:00

How does a female identifying TRA not know what TERF means?

Next to "he", "she", "boy", "girl" and "transvestite", it's one of thr most commonly used terms of abuse in this whole game.

RedToothBrush · 06/12/2017 19:18

If you are a woman's officer you should know what the term TERF stands for. The fact it's offensive to many in itself makes its use problematic as it's a devisive word. Failure to understand it alone, is a sign that someone is not suited to the role.

Use of it deliberately is even worse.

I would be alarmed by a woman using it to criticise other women.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 06/12/2017 19:21

That article makes it VERY clear (through inference) that we are 'unintentionally hilarious' precisely BECAUSE we are (mostly?) mothers.

Women are not funny. And women who have given birth even less so. They're all 'put your coat on, it's cold out there' and 'eat your vegetables' and they like rom coms and Boots adverts.

They scraped my sense of humour out with the afterbirth. You know it's true.

RedToothBrush · 06/12/2017 19:24

LongWeek I think being shown first hand the extent of abuse MPs or even potential MPs get is something to behold. All potential parliamentary candidates should be shown it by parties before standing. I am not aware of any party actively educating or helping candidates as part of their selection process, nor making it standard practice at lower levels of government.

I think if I had some support I might feel differently myself about standing. The reality is there are some politicians who are perpetrators themselves very sadly as demonstrated by the whole Lily debarkle.

In not clamping down on it, this in itself discourages women from politics, and makes the Jo Cox program a bit of a drop in the ocean and frankly something of a farce.

It’s like being a horrible dream where our screams aren’t heard

I've heard so many women say similar. It's a perfect analogy.

RedToothBrush · 06/12/2017 19:30

I so want to stay engaged in these issues but honestly I am feeling so defeated by it all

It’s like being a horrible dream where our screams aren’t heard

This is precisely how they win.

Just keep giving a shit.

Don't stop giving a shit.

They don't want you to feel like giving a shit makes a difference.

Why is that?

Because they know giving a shit makes you talk and share ideas. Ideas are dangerous things aren't they?

Offer comfort to others by saying I hear your screams, even if those lot don't. It's important to those who are affected negatively.

Power comes from realising that individual voices, however small or against what ever odds are important. This is why authoritarians peddle propaganda. Not to make you change your mind, but so you feel powerless and insignificant.

You are not.

LongWeek · 06/12/2017 19:33

I think that people are trying very hard to be politically correct, without thinking through the implications enough.

Redtooth, I think there is some support, and certainly MPs get security assistance (much more easily after Jo cox was killed).
But I think that if you are going to publicly state your views on things, as elected representatives have to, then You should expect robust disagreement.
Bullying/abuse is never ok. But as an MP, which lily wants to be, you have to engage with people you entirely disagree with.you have to engage with people who you may well find offensive. And still help them.
DH gets daily low-level abusive emails. Some people email low level aniseed real times a day. But he still helps them. That's his job.

Lily seems to think she can push her/his own agenda and therefore go a long way in politics. The reality of the hard slog getting elected will, I suspect, mean that lily realises that blowing her own trumpet is not the only thing that's important.

PencilsInSpace · 06/12/2017 19:33

What reassures me is that every day more and more people reach 'peak-trans' but nobody ever seems to go the other way - from gender-critical to wholehearted support for the trans agenda. Things are shifting slowly and at some point will reach critical mass. We're probably in for a fair amount more of the nonsensical stuff before that happens though. Hang on in there!

Datun · 06/12/2017 19:34

OlennasWimple

Can you link to that on Reddit?

I feel as though Reddit has a myriad of subterranean alleys that I don’t understand and might smell of wee.
