She's taking a Twitter break for her mental health because of the level of abuse she's receiving. She's a teenage girl, FFS - and even if you think she's a teenage boy, in what world does a 19 year old deserve this amount of bullying?

I hope you're all fucking happy now.

I’m not sure how that works with almost every other poster saying they’re not on Twitter, but anyhoo.

Datun · 06/12/2017 16:11

ReanimatedSGB

I don’t think that’s right. Lucy Meadows herself said that although the publicity was unwelcome, she was quite able to handle it.

The judge did indeed accuse the press. But that did not come from Lucy.

Fekko · 06/12/2017 16:19

Nope I'm not on twitter. It's full of attention seeking gasbags.

ArcheryAnnie · 06/12/2017 16:26

It's full of attention seeking gasbags

The entire internet is full of attention-seeking gasbags. The secret is to carefully pick who you follow.

Speaking of attention-seeking gasbags - anyone got a link to the Reddit post which mentions mumsnet?

Fekko · 06/12/2017 16:31

I do social media for work so I have no interest in it in real life.

Datun · 06/12/2017 16:36

They may talk about us on Reddit, down in the depths where no one goes. They won’t do it on Twitter where the whole world will see nothing more than a big, fat signpost to smart, civil gender critical women (and men, Mr G).

Ereshkigal · 06/12/2017 16:36

There was a post saying mumsnet was like ukip for gender critical radicalisation Grin

Datun · 06/12/2017 16:38

I’ve heard us referred to as those batshit women on mumsnet.

Seriously, if it’s important and you think we’re batshit come and talk!

I’ll put the kettle on.

OlennasWimple · 06/12/2017 16:39

Reanimated - this Guardian article from 2013 is a useful read about Lucy Meadows. Although it reports the comments from the coroner, it also makes clear that Lucy's wife and therapist did not see the media interest as culpable for her decision to commit suicide, for various reasons.

I'm about to go poking around on Reddit - send out a search party if I get sucked into the murky depths and don't return Wink

Leave a trail of breadcrumbs. Better yet, cake crumbs, I’ll find you

Fekko · 06/12/2017 16:50

Not without a gasmask and a canary I hope.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 06/12/2017 16:51

Mumsnet must really really annoy transactivists. But they cannot complain about it too much as that would lead to more people coming here to read the arguments, and the more people actually read the arguments and think into the whole thing, more people become gender critical themselves.

Anlaf · 06/12/2017 17:11

Has anyone seen the Broadly piece on this. Mumsnet is mentioned. Excerpts:

“It got pretty bad,” she says when we meet in London. “Lots of people inciting violence and stuff like that. My friends were like, ‘If you don’t block them, you’re not allowed to go on Twitter.’ So it was an easy choice.”

At a time of widespread concern over youth disengagement, Madigan stands out for her age and commitment to local politics. So how did she become the target of such vicious and abusive online bullying?

...

That’s when the online abuse began in earnest. On Mumsnet, an online forum better known for going viral for unintentionally hilarious posts from its userbase of mothers, Madigan was repeatedly misgendered and called a “19-year-old boy” and an “odious little creep.” Countless people on Twitter have misgendered her: “He was born a man and he will die a man,” one said. Madigan was accused of bullying Ruzylo out of her role—even though she does not belong to Ruzylo’s CLP and says she never interacted with Ruzylo beyond filing her complaint.

^Some people even found a Twitter account from 2013 using Madigan’s dead name, featuring an old pre-transition picture of Madigan making a blowjob gesture and linking to a nonexistent website called rape.com/savillesapprentice.^

The online bullying that Madigan has faced is horrific, but not uncommon.

What the "inciting violence and stuff" is, I dunno. The rest of the piece describes disagreement, although I am sure in volumes that are hard to take when you are 19.

Historykid · 06/12/2017 17:14

Very much agree with you Nickynackynoodle. Madigan was a pawn for someone else - a member of the Bexhill & Battle Labour CLP who bullied a woman out of her post in a sustained online hate campaign. The majority of Labour Bexhill & Battle CLP resigned in support of Anne. Madigan was just the final straw and participated in the bullying in the end. it exposed the nasty internal party politics.
The next stage of this was when Madigan's jokes about paedophilia and rape emerged, criticism of this was described as bigoted bullying. Madigan lied about these jokes despite the evidence and Madigan's brother saying it was true.
Then it was questioned if Madigan had been a Labour member long enough to be nominated & elected as per party rules, this hasn't be answered and is of course bigoted.
Then Madigan boasted & threatened to leak and abuse Labour women's data, this is a crime under current legislation - to abuse political office in regards to data.
Then Madigan's enrolment on the Jo Cox women in leadership course made people question if Labour was flouting the Equality Act 2010 without even putting a policy change up for debate as a motion within the party. Gender identity changes aren't law yet & members haven't been consulted.
Then Madigan posting pictures posing with Corbyn & support from Milliband and Rayner appeared to be fanning the flames and causing a lot of questions about where Labour leadership stand regarding women's concerns.
Then the comments about i'm just a 19 year old appeared to reiterate that Madigan was wholly unsuitable for the role.
So Labour have not prepared Madigan but thrust him/her/they/zi into the spotlight & are using a teenager as canon fodder to beat feminists with.
Although I am super annoyed at the gloating, bullying and narcissistic behaviour of Madigan I feel so sorry for him/her/they/whatever as I think their own self interest has allowed them to be used in this way. It seems wrong to use a teenager like this. All my complaints shall be directed at the Labour Party, not the individual.

Terrylene · 06/12/2017 17:15

and says she never interacted with Ruzylo beyond filing her complaint Confused why file a complaint, then Hmm

How rude

Can we sue

Loads of posts are intentionally hilarious

I know its not the point of the thread...but really, how insulting

Datun · 06/12/2017 17:22

Anlaf

Honestly. That piece has got fuck all.

A mass of contradictions. Stating biology is hateful - even though it is the premise on which the entire conflict rests. And why can’t women shut the fuck up.

I sincerely hope any mention of mumsnet brings people here.

Fekko · 06/12/2017 17:23

Lily was happy to interact with a trans identified male who said he would punch anyone, male or female, who misgendered a trans person, but blocked the women on the thread asking how Lily would represent their views on the GRA. This is what we are dealing with. Lily said he would 'educate' anyone whose politics were different to his on gender, which is absolutely not what the role of women's officer is about; Lily is there to represent the views of all women who contact him to the Labour party - it's very clear that he has no intention of doing this. He then went on to call a woman a terf, which is a misogynistic term used to denote feminist women as legitimate targets for abuse violence. This was after his trans pal had said he would physically attack women. He has misogynists like their councillor Tris and Owen Jones trying to make out he's the victim of bullying when all that has happened is women asking him the very questions he just signed up to answer(!). This is a mess on every level. Labour need to get their act together.

Datun · 06/12/2017 17:28

This was after his trans pal had said he would physically attack women.

Who was this ?

Fekko · 06/12/2017 17:30

How stupid and useless is the labour leadership? Why have they.l not even put out some lame excuse about all this!

Oh I forgot - racism, sexism and abuse flames are ignored.

Bit Mumsnet Madness innit - look what the silly ladies say!

Not a mother but never unintentionally hilarious either cos mumsnet is fucking serious

Agreed Datun, but if you get your "what is right on" steer by scrolling through websites for youngish women this was once me, Jezebel all the way you'd go along with it, I think.

You'd see how little you'd have to do ("he's not a woman") to be called as a hateful, vicious bully.
