Lily Madigan, TIM, elected Labour women's officer

Lily is 19. Lily was instrumental in the hate campaign against Anne Ruzylo which resulted in her standing down.

You have to be a woman to be women’s officer but ‘The Labour councillor said that “lived experience as a woman” should be considered an advantage — but not a prerequisite — for the role of women’s officer.’

Lily could also have gone for the LGBT officer role but they didn’t want that. No, they wanted to show women that they can shit all over them and we will applaud them for doing it.

I’m absolutely furious about this ( as you can probably tell)

How about a letter campaign? Sent to ‘Lily‘. Listing all the issues mentioned in this thread to do with women’s biology. Including diagrams, funding problems, statistics, anecdotal experience, lots of slides with statistics and detailed charts.

Ask for meetings where Lily can be involved in an exchange of ideas and campaigns to address the biological inequality that they are confident they represent.

The minutes that are taken at the meeting can be followed up with emails and timelines proposing deadlines for when Lily can have addressed these issues.

CAAKE

Was she sitting next to the woman who talked about prisons? I think I recognise her, but I can’t remember her speaking.

shhhfastasleep · 20/11/2017 10:42

Sentiment GrinGrinGrin. Brilliant!

DJBaggySmalls · 20/11/2017 10:43

How much unpaid labour do women donate to Labour?

Elendon · 20/11/2017 10:53

I was personally asked to ring round hundreds of people local to me. I'm a single mum of a disabled son.

I didn't do it. I just thought, fuck that shit. Pay for it yourself!

I have walked miles delivering leaflets.

AbiBrown · 20/11/2017 10:56

Yes, excellent idea. That's the only way to really effect change. There's a group on Facebook campaigning to debate the new gender identity law, I'm sure they're experts in drafting that kind of letter. Need to check what they're called...

CAAKE · 20/11/2017 10:56

Yes @Datun , she was on the left hand side near to the back, sitting with Helen Saxby I think. She made some very good comments in the discussion at the end.

Blanchefleur · 20/11/2017 11:10

WTAF have I just read? The post of women's officer has been given to a boy? A boy who recently managed to hound actual women out of their posts? And people voted for this? Who on earth did he manage to beat?

My Labour party membership has recently come up for renewal and I feel truly stuck too. My (Labour) MP actively supports self-ID, so no glimmering light there either. Do I continue to fund misogyny in the hope of being able to tackle it from the inside, or resign and tell them why I won't fund misogyny? And who the hell would I back instead?

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 20/11/2017 11:14

It won't change how I vote tbh. I'm a lifelong Labour voter - but I started voting tactically at the recent election. I now vote "not the Tories" as I feel they're a serious risk to all of us. That means Lib Dem where I live.

Will ask to see both my local MP and Labour candidate about this.

They have actually breached their own rules here unless lily has a GRC.

Can someone challenge that? Because you are right.

It could easily be another case of culture running ahead of the law.

And it would go a long way to highlight the current status of the law (and thereby also highlight the future status).

At the moment, you can’t just willy-nilly ignore the legal definitions of men and women.

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 20/11/2017 11:23

They have actually breached their own rules here unless lily has a GRC.

That's a really good point. Is anyone here in touch with Fair Play For Women? Might be a good idea to highlight that point with them as they could amplify that.

Moveornot · 20/11/2017 11:33

I've had enough of this shit too. I won't vote for them and enable this kind of bollocks.

Natsku · 20/11/2017 11:44

They have actually breached their own rules here unless lily has a GRC. Wouldn’t have a keg to stand on if an unsuccessful candidate or indeed any local party member challenged the result.’ trams-women are women’ may be an effective mantra but it is not (yet?) the law

Very very good point, it's highly unlikely that 'Lily' has a GRC if he only started transitioning a year ago so someone should challenge the result on that basis. Someone needs to do that!

C8H10N4O2 · 20/11/2017 11:50

The fact that UK Labour thinks women's interests are best served by a 19yr old who was part of an abusive campaign to get rid of a lesbian is enough for me.
Even if Lily were biologically female where is the relevant experience or the integrity?

It speaks volumes about the attitude to women of the current Labour hierarchy.

OlennasWimple · 20/11/2017 11:59

Oh FFS Angry

kinkajoukid · 20/11/2017 12:02

Please, please don't give up on Labour because of this though - some of us are disabled and can't face another round of cuts, harassment and judgement from a Tory govt and Tory DWP.

The thought that Labour might win the next election is literally the only thing giving me glimmer of hope that life might get better.

53rdWay · 20/11/2017 12:03

One of the things a women’s officer is supposed to do is encourage more women to be party members/engaged with the party, and look at barriers preventing women’s engagement. Given that one barrier is women getting bullied and hounded out by angry men (and this definitely happens in Labour, I’ve heard women Labour activists talk really sadly about it), how can this be the person to do that job? This is someone who did that exact thing to Anne Ruzylo!

Elendon · 20/11/2017 12:17

Labour don't care about you though kinka You're a woman and so have so called cis privilege above transwomen.

I will continue to vote for Labour but they no longer get my money or precious time.

kinkajoukid · 20/11/2017 12:27

Thank you Elendon I am getting more and more freaked out by this new weird world we live in, but I still hope that Labour are better than the Tories... and at least men can be disabled too so that helps a bit.

Even the most pro-trans person must see that this 19 year old cannot properly represent women (females) any better than another 19, 39 or 59 year old man could. And it vastly over-represents a small group of people who have their own issues to discuss. Weird world.

ElizabethLemon · 20/11/2017 12:52

I’m speechless at this. What a farce, it’s like something out of brass eye!

Beingrippedoff · 20/11/2017 13:04

Wtaf
I could actually cry reading this. What an odious little shit, what are the Labour Party thinking

Sentimentallentil · 20/11/2017 13:10

So I looked at her YouTube videos too, she has no ducking clue what she’s on about, this is genuinely frightening.

This is her last year talking about bathroom policy.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=i6N_bv3BMgA

She basically says if you don’t let trans people use their chosen bathroom you are literally killing children.
How can this be representative of women? She doesn’t give a fuck about women.

hazeyjane · 20/11/2017 13:17

Oh for fucking shites sake.

I will be cancelling and sending back my membership.

How unbelievably depressing and shit.

NettleTea · 20/11/2017 13:23

OK People

Probably outing myself but sod it

I was also on the committee that Anne was women's officer for. We all walked out. The trans issue was what finished Anne and I but wasnt everything about what was going on in our CLP, which all boiled down to one individual that was causing havoc in a role he originally had on the executive committee (soon 'no confidenced' out of) as a secretary of a smaller sub branch (which I believe he may next be put out of) and many many other things.

This person fed Annes anonymous twitter feed to Lily. Anne had said nothing abusive, but as an active feminist she shared tweets from many groups that shared concerns about the GRA changes. She and I attended the gender debate held in Brighton during conference, the week after our colleague got belted at speakers corner.

Lily tried to get her out of our CLP at that point, but as she isnt a member of our branch, our secretaty batted it into the long grass. Whether Lily took it higher or not we do not know - they certainly threatened to.

I too had been really badly bullied by the same individual who fed the stuff to Lily. They abused their role as admin on our CLP's page to do all sorts of shit. They got other people to submit motions to our CLP to force the resignation of anyone who posted anything transphobic. And another one asking for any FEMINISTS doing the same to be kicked out. But would not allow debate on the subject and used inflammatory terms in order to prejudice people before the vote

Lily belongs to a different CLP (constituency Labour party branch) so their being elected womens officer may be off the back of this, but they havenrt replaced Anne.

Our CLP's womens forum requested Anne to chair last Friday's women's meeting, even though she is no longer officer. In the absence of any officers, they wanted to meet. So it was an informal meet up, but certainly good to know we have the support of many of our women members

Despite many many requests and reports we still dont know if the regional section are going to do anything about this individual. we suspect they are planning a takeover as they have the support of a certain number of very young members who have fallen for the victim story, and believe its a plot from the right of the party. 5 of us were certainly to the left, but thats what he is going with.

We have asked for clarification as to what constitutes transphobia - no reply

We have asked whether we are allowed to debate a Tory Bill that is still in consultation - no reply
