Lily Madigan, TIM, elected Labour women's officer

Lily is 19. Lily was instrumental in the hate campaign against Anne Ruzylo which resulted in her standing down.

You have to be a woman to be women’s officer but ‘The Labour councillor said that “lived experience as a woman” should be considered an advantage — but not a prerequisite — for the role of women’s officer.’

Lily could also have gone for the LGBT officer role but they didn’t want that. No, they wanted to show women that they can shit all over them and we will applaud them for doing it.

I’m absolutely furious about this ( as you can probably tell)

What do labour female MPs think about this? Are they allowed to discuss it, I wonder?
A great number of them seem to be handmaidens, and are facilitating this!

PricklyBall · 20/11/2017 09:32

Callamia: Annoyingly, I can’t even join in the counsellor short-list this week because there’s no space to have a say if you’re trapped at home with a newborn.

But that's alright because that little turd Maynard says biology isn't limiting in any way...

Ironically I joined the Labour party this time last year precisely because my MP is a middle-of-the-road, solid campaigning MP with a brilliant track record of getting shit done, and I didn't want them deselected by Momentum for having stood up to Corbyn. But this is really making me rethink whether the Labour party isn't beyond saving.

badbadhusky · 20/11/2017 09:37

I want to qualify this comment in my post above

I’m now done with Labour.

I still think Jess Phillips is awesome. My own Labour MP does a good job too. But Labour as a party does not represent me any more.

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 20/11/2017 09:39

I know. That's who I meant Milli

PricklyBall · 20/11/2017 09:47

Oops, sorry, Madigan, not Maynard. D'oh (in bed with lurgy, not thinking straight this morning).

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 20/11/2017 09:49

I guess Lily's aims will likely be:

 Encourage trans women to join the party
 Encourage and empower trans women party members to play a full and active part in the party’s activities
 Build links with trans women in the wider electorate through campaigning, engaging on policy issues and two way communication
 Ensure that the priorities of the constituency reflect the views and concerns of transwomen members and trans women in the wider community. "

If transwomen and women then that's fair enough, no? What's the problem?

FFS Angry

We have to get the Tories out before Brexit happens - our country will be asset stripped in "trade deals" otherwise. I'm genuinely fearful for my DC's future if we don'tget them out soon. But I'm so disappointed with Labour over this issue. Politics is such a shit show at the moment. Sad

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 20/11/2017 09:50

To angry to type, obviously!

That should say

If transwomen are women then that's fair enough, no? What's the problem?

mateysmum · 20/11/2017 09:51

Please will those of you who are Labour members raise this in your local parties and point out the utter absurdity of it. This appointment is an insult to women. I would certainly not feel this person could represent me as a woman. He is barely an adult. How can he possibly have "lived experience" as a woman.

Trans women are not women. They are transwomen. Good luck to them.

CautionTape · 20/11/2017 09:57

Oh this is just great.
The Labour Party at their best!!!!

And I thought Emma Thornburry on QT was an all time low stating how it was fine for school boys to identify as girls without even an acknowledgement of that meaning access to changing rooms, sports teams, sex education talks and any program designed to promote female participation.

It comes to something when Rod Fucking Liddle is the voice of women.

wheresmymojo · 20/11/2017 10:02

Lived experience of being a woman is not a pre-requisite for being the Woman's Officer.

I mean, seriously. WTAF?

Battleax · 20/11/2017 10:02

Please will those of you who are Labour members raise this in your local parties and point out the utter absurdity of it.

Our CLP is so bloody listless. They look embarrassed and shuffle their feet when any national party shenanigans are raised.

Perhaps not being a momentum-hijacked CLP is as much luck as anyone can dare to expect in that score?

It really is very fragmented.

PoppyJ1 · 20/11/2017 10:07

He says: I would argue strongly that all appeals to biology are anti-feminist.

Ok, "Lily" of the issues that affect women that need better representation (and funding), which do you have experience of?

Menstrual health - n/a
Pregnancy- n/a
Childbirth - n/a
Miscarriage - n/a
Stillbirth - n/a
Abortion - n/a
FGM - n/a
Forced marriage - n/a
Pay gap (often based on perception of reproductive capacity)- n/a
Misogyny - n/a
Breastfeeding - n/a
Hysterectomy - n/a
Childcare - n/a
Cat calling - n/a

If you were a woman, "Lily," you would realise biology is quite important.

AbiBrown · 20/11/2017 10:09

It's so infuriating. In reply to some of you above, I've been involved in labour party campaigns in the last couple of years, (mainly roped in for my research experience). By and large, women in the movement, including those actively working in councils, have been appalled by this attack on our rights. Most' labour supporters have felt the same, so please don't give up on the party otherwise à tiny minority will have won and be given powers to further diminish women's rights. Ideally, what we'd do is complain en masse to our various Labour representatives and be more vocal about these issues. I've found that many women - including me I have to say- are scared to speak out and become the victims of another hate campaign. What I found even more depressing is that these debates have completely overshadowed and sidelined actually necessary campaigns and issues such as employment, housing, tackling racism, homophobia and mental health problems...

DJBaggySmalls · 20/11/2017 10:09

This is going to end in some embarrassment for the Labour Party.

Good. Let them suck it up. Bunch of misogynysts.

badbadhusky · 20/11/2017 10:10

Health inequalities resulting from women’s biology, like the poorer outcome for heart attacks where early diagnosis is unduly reliant on male presenting symptoms, too.

Sentimentallentil · 20/11/2017 10:11

Annoyingly, I can’t even join in the counsellor short-list this week because there’s no space to have a say if you’re trapped at home with a newborn. I’m feeling pretty voiceless right now.

Which ironically is exactly the kind of biological block that the women’s officer is supposed to be working at to get rid of so women can fully engage in politics.

Fucking hell I am FUMING about this.

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 20/11/2017 10:12

This is one of those times I really hope there are lurking DM journos, ready to write a 'loony left' piece. Could be a joint piece including the WEP BS.

God I'm so mad

PickingOakum · 20/11/2017 10:15

The current incarnation of the labour party executive have no intention of getting into power. It's just jobs for the lads with great bennies and no real responsibility.

That's why this shit is happening...because it doesn't matter. Corbyn's executive doesn't care if they piss off female voters because they don't actually want to win anyway. Why jeopardise a cushy number?

If you don't believe me, consider what would have happened under Blair if this situation arose. I strongly suspect it would never have happened in the first place because Blair, Campbell and Mandelson would have crushed the issue before it got this far in order to protect female labour votes.

Elendon · 20/11/2017 10:20

I'm not renewing my membership. Men are welcome to over run the Labour Party if they wish.

Actually the level of bullying that goes on in the Labour Party against women is a disgrace.

CAAKE · 20/11/2017 10:25

Yes, @Datun , that was Anne. Her picture is in the Times article.

(I met you there at Brighton too but I’ve MN name changed since then 😄).

Elendon · 20/11/2017 10:29

Callima

I feel voiceless now too. I will vote for Labour, but no way am I EVER helping them again with my free time and my money.

I'm sure there are hoards of trans* ready and willing to take up the mantle for fundraising, leafleting, and giving of their money. Absolutely positive about that.

MakeMisogynyAHateCrime · 20/11/2017 10:29

This has made me furious. Utterly furious.

How long before this happens in another constituency?

I'm seriously thinking about identifying as something else. Making something up, Pineapplesaraus (or does it need to be something that previously existed) and force my reality on it. My tits, periods, childbirth, sexual assault, sexual harassment, rape, need for hormonal contraceptives, need for abortion - my reality every single day living as me.

I identify as a fucking Apple.

AlternativeTentacle · 20/11/2017 10:31

I have already identified as a banana this morning on twitter.

CAAKE · 20/11/2017 10:32

Sorry @Datun , this article has the picture of Anne -

Sentimentallentil · 20/11/2017 10:38

I’m going to run for the racial diversity officer, I mean technically I’m a white woman but I identify as black because I’m working class.

I would argue strongly that all appeals to skin colour are anti-black people. We can’t challenge the view we are limited by our skin colour in one breath and use the skin colour argument against trans racial people in the next.

HmmHmmHmm
