Jess Bradley and the NUS have helpfully “reframed” the events at Speaker’s Corner for us

It took two weeks of revision Hmm

HattiesBackpack · 26/09/2017 16:02

I've just read the Jess Bradley article - if this is currently the sort of thinking that is happening in our University's then women's rights are in serious trouble.

It also makes me so angry - these young women are tearing down everything that has been fought for in regards of womens rights, everything that has helped pave the way for them to access education, and to gain roles of influence and they want to set it back, and for what? So we don't hurt the feelings of the poor men?!

Have they opened a bloody history book? Do they watch the news and see how badly women are treated in the Middle East today? And this is what they get inspired by- helping f*ing men take back our rights? Are they for real?!

Apologies Im going in to ranting mode. I just really hope these young women wise up.

Datun · 26/09/2017 16:23

Martin Ponting is the one who raped two girls, one of whom I believe was underage, right?

Because there was another thread on here with people trying to find out anything about that crime, and they couldn't. Even lawyers who had access to more information, couldn't find it.

MissHavishamsleftdaffodil · 26/09/2017 16:42

Oh bollocks Jess Bradley, that's purely and factually not true.

The 'Terf' (aka woman who dared to have concerns about women's rights contrary to yours) was punched in the face and had her throat grabbed by two individuals, one of whom twice dashed over to sock her. There is NO WAY to make this excusable or acceptable.

The 'Terf' offered NO PHYSICAL VIOLENCE. She resisted her camera being stolen. She hit no one. The 'headlock' - is resisting the theft of her property.

It's plain on the video no one is protesting or refusing being filmed and she is nowhere near anyone's face. The beating comes out of the blue.

Also missed that lovely moment Jess where one of the poor oppressed victims of Terfs was touched on the shoulder by a woman (from the TRA side) who suggested they calm down/stop battering people, and that person turns on them and walks into their face looking highly threatening and telling them to fuck off. The woman backs off looking scared stiff.

This is male violence. This is misogency. The emperor is stark bollock naked and there is no excuse or justification for behaving like this.

MissHavishamsleftdaffodil · 26/09/2017 16:45

I can't wait for this 'freeing and reformative violence' to be tried as a defense in a court of law, I really can't. Angry The shock to these snowflakes that their reality isn't going to be indulged....

TalkingintheDark · 26/09/2017 20:57

That article... Shock what about the way Bradley uses the passive form "a punch was thrown" to disguise the fact of who actually punched. And to minimise the other violence.

And this: Some local trans activists gathered outside, hoping to show their dissent to the meeting going on inside - some TRAs, having already shut down the debate at one venue with their bullying, tried to shut it down this time too with a totally planned campaign of harrasment and violence.

The whole thing is absolutely horrendous in its level of sheer falsehood and bigoted hate. And this goes out on an NUS webpage. WTF is wrong with this generation of students? How have they managed to cocoon themselves so completely from reality and reason? And why are their delusions carrying so much weight?

invisiblecats · 26/09/2017 21:27

Jesus Christ the double think in that article is astounding:

"Now, the narrative is set: trans people are violent and anti-feminist, and the transphobes are the victims of misogynistic violence. It’s that age-old tactic of bigots everywhere; to make the bully out to be the victim"

Ironic much?

And "anti-trans radical feminists offer little in terms of vision. TERFs have to resort to attacking us because without the oxygen of publicity that comes from riling trans activists up at events like this, nobody would pay any attention."

WTF? People are paying attention because a young person assaulted a 60 year old woman in an unprovoked attack and attempted to steal her posessions.

Do these people really believe the bollocks they write? (Sadly I think they do).

invisiblecats · 26/09/2017 21:51

I think possibly unis had become pretty much apolitical places before this came along - mine was anyway.

The best idea the SU had at my uni 5 years ago to support a large match in London was a banner saying "Demo 2012". They were unable to come up with 1 issue to march on. Pathetic! They seemed more interested in being in tbe SU to get jobs than becoinng politically active.

Into this nothingness comes TRA. It's the only radical gig in town at the uni. Why wouldn't people want to sign up? It's where it's at if you want to be political / right on - but not think too hard about the issues.

Hey look. A compliment from Glosswitch on Twitter. Full thread is at twitter.com/VictoriaPeckham/status/912735762227122176

That Twitter diversion above led me to this: If the Handmaid's Tale was Scottish - a little light relief for you all. 😂

Rumandraisin1 · 27/09/2017 00:12

That's brilliant badbadhusky!

NoMoreNotToday · 27/09/2017 06:50

Ive read on twitter the underaged girl was disabled but not seen other information datun

theaveragewife · 27/09/2017 07:00

I was going to post this the other day, but it seems more appropriate now. In relation to University & Student Union views, I do like the singular comment though! terf event

Seems 'terf' is an accepted academic term, no critical thinking applied.

theaveragewife · 27/09/2017 07:04

Also, I don't know about any of you, but I've certainly never sought out trans teens on the internet in order to tell their parents and school. We are changed from people who want to protect women and allow everyone their own space to perpetrators of stalking and crime. Is that classic projection?

Rumandraisin1 · 27/09/2017 08:42

Good luck to everyone attending today's debate in Brighton. Hope you have a safe and informative meeting.

nauticant · 27/09/2017 08:47

theaveragewife: Although I couldn't helping laughing at "the infamous ‘pussy hats’ worn at the Women’s Marches “... are extremely harmful to transwomen who might be standing there without a vagina”", the tone of the article brought to mind university struggle sessions from the Cultural Revolution.

However, there's a laugh to be had from looking at the author's name.

Lancelottie · 27/09/2017 08:51

Oh christ. Is that article a spoof too? I'm finding it increasingly hard to tell the difference.

Lancelottie · 27/09/2017 08:53

Yep, it's bad to be in the half of the population disadvantaged by being thought of as pussies to be grabbed by misogynistic men.

But it's definitely worse to be deprived of being in the half of the population disadvantaged by being thought of as pussies to be grabbed by misogynistic men.

Or something.

hackmum · 27/09/2017 08:58

invisibl cats: 'And "anti-trans radical feminists offer little in terms of vision. TERFs have to resort to attacking us because without the oxygen of publicity that comes from riling trans activists up at events like this, nobody would pay any attention.'

But presumably the person who wrote this knew quite well that the feminists were trying to have their meeting in secret, but that the gathering at Speakers' Corner was deliberately targeted by TAs shouting at them and trying to disrupt them. Is this an intentional lie? Or extreme stupidity? Or what?

hackmum · 27/09/2017 09:06

Sorry, the bolding went wrong in that last post.

Just followed that Janice Turner Twitter thread, which took me to this link where the then Sean Faye talks about being a man who enjoys wearing make-up:

www.theguardian.com/fashion/2014/dec/06/my-life-in-makeup

theaveragewife · 27/09/2017 09:08

nauticant Grin I hadn't noticed the name before!

Definitely not a spoof, this is stuff taught in classrooms there - which was very much a struggle session (had to look that one up).

YesVeryGoodVeryStrong · 27/09/2017 09:11

"I'm OffBread" Grin

MorrisZapp · 27/09/2017 09:16

I love the Sean Faye blog. He's cute and very funny. A man in makeup, why the hell not.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 27/09/2017 09:47

He might have been cute and funny in those days. But nowadays, not so much. If at all.

FactsAreNotMean · 27/09/2017 09:50

Sadly Morris on twitter he's definitely not; he's an over earnest jumped up little tosser who tries to pseudo-intellectualise the 'trans struggle' and winds up sounding like a patronising eejit.
