Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

What causes women to become trans activists?

TheChampagneGalop · 14/09/2017 18:24

I mean the type of activists that appeared to disrupt the recent meeting about gender in London.

From what I've read about this incident in Speaker's corner there were more women than men protesting and harassing women trying to go to that meeting.
I watched the video and the male violence was of course disturbing and alarming (and criminal!), but the mindless mantra chants from the women about terfs also disturbed me.

TRAs have managed to hone their message in a very social media friendly way.

Unless you engage with it in a more meaningful way, it's very easy to hear things like "80% of trans children try to commit suicide, only living as their preferred gender can make them happy" and "transwomen are more likely to be murdered than any other group on earth" and take it at face value as something so awful that of course everyone should be prioritising this group over all others.

Plus, for those who have come into it through university / student politics, there are a number of fairly charismatic TRA leaders around, which makes the message more compelling also

NoLoveofMine · 14/09/2017 21:52

When I think about it I'm quite wound up about how much some have taken in the trans activist line. I think many discuss and share posts about how it's "actual violence" not to use preferred pronouns etc than, er, "actual" male violence against women and girls.

OlennasWimple · 14/09/2017 21:52

I cross-posted with NoLove...

I also think that not many women want to define themselves as "radical feminists", and if to question the TRA ideology makes one a TERF then not many women will willingly want to apply that label

NoLoveofMine · 14/09/2017 21:54

I definitely think that's the case Olennas. It's incredibly frustrating because it means they won't engage meaningfully or consider facts, consider how regressive it is to suggest being a woman is a feeling and so much else, more invested in ensuring they're not considered "TERFs".

SentientCushion · 14/09/2017 21:57

They're ok with being a feminist but not one 'like that'

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 14/09/2017 21:57

Also the fact that the fuckwits manage to convince themselves that men can become women means that they will believe and endorse any manner of shit thrown in their path

MissHavishamsleftdaffodil · 14/09/2017 22:03

It was said brilliantly on a twitter post someone shared on MN today about last night's beating up of a woman (can't find it, sorry)

Victim's violence: noticing biology

TRA violence: four attacking, punching, knocking to the floor, stealing camera, fingermarks left on throat, bruised face

IrenetheQuaint · 14/09/2017 22:07

I think a lot of the female transactivists see it as a natural next step after gay and lesbian rights. Plus more exciting, as in the middle-class urban circles they mix in everyone is totally accepting of gay and lesbian rights, whereas with the trans thing there is all the excitement of fighting for a cause against all the evil blinkered TERFs who just can't accept the idea of people being able to live the way that's natural to them.

SoPassRemarkable · 14/09/2017 22:10

It's a trendy cause of the moment. They think they're been right on.

SoPassRemarkable · 14/09/2017 22:14

When I was at uni it was the done thing to march and campaign against stuff so I went on marches against the Criminal Justice Bill, sat in trees protesting against bypasses, etc.

Now it seems like Transactivism is the next big thing for young, female, student types. Gives them an identity and a purpose in life.

whoputthecatout · 14/09/2017 22:14

I suppose it's similar to any of the off the wall cults - lots of people who have lost all critical sense being brainwashed by a few 'leaders', in this case TAs - otherwise buggered if I know. The level of stupidity, flying in the face of all scientific knowledge and basic biological facts, is, indeed mind boggling.

EamonnWright · 14/09/2017 22:19

If you can be convinced that someone with a cock and balls can be a woman then you can be convinced of anything.

Crude but true imo.

cuirderussie · 14/09/2017 22:22

I had a very bruising encounter with some of them recently, was shocked at their ignorance of mainstream feminism and dismissal of older feminists in a Pol Pot Year Zero kind of way. They scared me tbh. I think educational standards have become dumbed down and postmodern shite has taken over a lot of campuses. I often disagreed with older feminists (as in 1970s generation, I was a 1990s student) but I never told them to go fuck themselves or called them names. I assumed we were on the same side and respected their time in the trenches. This new shit I can hardly grasp....but it's a gift to men isn't it? Sad

whoputthecatout · 14/09/2017 22:23

I suppose every generation has its causes. When I was young it was CND and ban the bomb.

Now it's fashionable to pretend that men can be women. Talk about turkeys voting for Christmas.....

NoLoveofMine · 14/09/2017 22:25

There are young people who don't agree and see it for what it is, of course. I feel like I should be a lot more vocal in opposing this amongst those I know of who've taken in the trans activist line than I am. It's not always easy though.

whoputthecatout · 14/09/2017 22:32

The cult seems to have grown alongside the practice of substituting gender for sex. Whenever I have to fill in a form asking for my gender, I cross it out and print sex.

I was watching a news item on the Beeb today - can't even remember what it was - but they were referring to gender. I just wanted to scream "you mean sex, stupid" at the telly. Grin. Actually, it's not funny..all this collusion with misnaming sex.

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 14/09/2017 22:36

Kids know fuck all these days. They do what they want during their childhood. Sure parents give them Roald Dahl and other stuff but they didn't have to endure The World at War sixteen times out of sheer boredom, Zorro, Cowboy films and the infinite number of war films etc that taught you something other than what was designed to entertain

Or go to the library to read anything because there was fuck all else to do.

Sorry. Old git mode. Bedtime, I think

NoLoveofMine · 14/09/2017 22:38

People seem to say "gender" so often when they mean "sex", so often I think it's said more than "sex". It's pervasive and I agree whoputthecatout is colluding with substituting the two and so suggesting "cis" is accurate, that most identify with the gender roles imposed on their sex.

NoLoveofMine · 14/09/2017 22:39

Kids know fuck all these days. They do what they want during their childhood.

Quite a blanket statement Hmm

onecrazycook · 14/09/2017 22:47

What a jumped up bunch of middle class bullshit this is. I notice you didn't ask "Why be a trans protester?". That speaks volumes in itself.
In fact let's look at it from another angle- why be for or against any group of people? Don't you realise how ridiculous it is to protest against someone's sexuality, or life choices? If you're protesting against gays, trans, or against a race of people you have got to be the most enormous prick. It's like starting a protest against gingers. THEY ARE BORN LIKE THIS, ITS NOT A CHOICE!!!
Calling the trans community a CULT is fucking despicable. These are people who have gone through huge personal trauma in an attempt to come to terms with the idea that they may have been born with the wrong gender. Do you have any idea how shocking that must be? They're bloody people, not a weird breakaway religious group!
And to the absolute morons who are attempting to compare "the pain" of being a feminist to being trans: you're idiots. Feminism is about equality. Bring trans isnt about fighting for anything except to be recognised as their fully realised gender. Acceptance!

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 14/09/2017 22:51

Love, I'm tired, read last line of my post!

And I'm off bed due to fear of exclamation mark exposure below

SentientCushion · 14/09/2017 22:52

Who wants to take this one?

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 14/09/2017 22:52

Feminism is about liberating women from the patriarchy.

It's not about women giving hugs and puppies to everyone.

In fact teaching women that their purpose in life is to give hugs and puppies to everyone, even if it means they end up with no fucking puppies is one of the main ways that the patriarchy is enabled to continue.

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 14/09/2017 22:54

Grin Sentient

NoLoveofMine · 14/09/2017 22:54

Sorry Assigned; I'm also a little wound up about this issue so noticed that comment because not all young people have succumbed to all this (NAYPALT).
