Has anyone seen this news story today? The irony that a mtt transgender goes off on one about race when the exact same thing can be said about men's privilege and society standing on the backs of women...
Sorry, just made me a bit Hmm

Are you trying to render some kind of confused allusion to societal bias?

SerfTerf · 02/09/2017 17:42

That Becky article is pretty hateful.

When you analyse it with an eye to motive, it's hard to discern a positive motivation for writing that. It's stereotype and smear. It fuels hatred. It doesn't tackle hatred.

All this stuff is pretty hard to view from a position mixed heritage.

quencher · 02/09/2017 17:53

@SerfTerf not really, I was being straightforward.

OlennasWimple · 02/09/2017 17:54

I must confess I hadn't heard of Munroe Bergdorf until yesterday, so I have done a bit of reading up on the third most influential LGBT person in the UK

Let me introduce you to Pxssy Palace, "ORGANICALLY GROWN GIRL GANG. PROMOTING AND CREATING SPACES FOR YOU TO LET GO, FEEL FREE AND RELEASE YOUR INNER PUSSY. MEOW." Confused

A disappointing collection of (male fantasy) female cliches: bitch, stripper, pussy... Angry

Whilst if she really wants a debate about race, it might be a helpful starting point if she talked about how , as well as become a transwoman. Hmm

OlennasWimple · 02/09/2017 17:56

The Becky article is interesting and thought-provoking. If it had been written by a black woman, though, I would be more receptive to it. Otherwise it just stinks of misogyny.

SerfTerf · 02/09/2017 17:58

Straightforwardly what quencher*?

Why is it "common sense" that black people are racist?

quencher · 02/09/2017 18:13

@SerfTerf
It's because you cannot be treated badly and not internalise the hatred or your worth, as in self fulfilling prophecy. It's a known fact how black people view themselves and others. The same way the post above shows a lighten person to meet the standard of white. That hatred would have come from comments from other black people. I would bet my money on the fact that he/she would have had references growing up to being dark. I don't know anyone who hasn't.
Or changing your hair,
Children developing self hatred once they start to discover what the world thinks of them. The negative comment mixed race children /adults get from other black people.

The means for which black people police each other to meet whiteness and if you can't you are not good enough. This is something that is not even said but has means for which it can be applied.

Some people don't even know they are policing one another because they can be so mundane. The same way sexism works and flushes we all contribute by policing other women and our children by making sure they stick to societies norms and values about women.

quencher · 02/09/2017 18:17

And because this is the feminist board and people would understand how self fulfilling prophecy would work in a system that dictates ideology about people and what we should believe. How can black people be immune from that. How can women be immune from patriarchy 's ideology and forms of socialisation and not internalise all the hate and oppression.

VestalVirgin · 02/09/2017 18:21

If it had been written by a black woman, though, I would be more receptive to it. Otherwise it just stinks of misogyny.

Yeah.
Black women feeling disappointed that white feminists still side with white men, fair enough.

But a man? Why would he think women owe him anything? Why doesn't he invent nasty names for different kinds of racist white men? Why focus his criticism on women?

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 02/09/2017 18:31

That was pretty much my summing up of it, vestal!!

InigoTaran · 02/09/2017 19:33

I felt v uncomfortable reading the article about Beckys and thinking where I fit in amongst those categories. I guess the male, black author is writing from his perspective of how he's experienced white women in his life and his cynicism about how much, or little they understand and are truly aligned to the struggles of black pp. I get it, as a white woman, I will never truly get it. But to dismiss us all in such derogatory terms doesn't exactly encourage white women who abhor racism and want to fight it. Is it the same as pp on here who are sometimes quite scathing of men who proclaim to be feminists...?

scottishdiem · 02/09/2017 19:34

Loved the Becky Article. If Mumsnet did gifs I would post a stand up and applause one at this:

"If you want to make Reba upset, mention how white women have always been complicit in white supremacy. Remind Reba about the white woman who lied on Emmett Till. Remind her about the white women whose chastities were avenged by lynch mobs. Show her the story about the white woman who went to the Supreme Court to dismantle affirmative action even though white women are the main benefactors. Remind her of the 53 percent of white women who kicked black people under the bus by voting for Donald Trump.

Reba won’t like that because Reba doesn’t really care about equality. Reba cares about winning. She believes that white women deserve the gold medal in the oppression Olympics, and if there is a chance that she isn’t on the podium, Reba thinks you’re not being fair. Reba talks about white privilege, but Reba doesn’t understand that she is white privilege."

scottishdiem · 02/09/2017 19:37

Also the Becky post was edited by Yesha Callahan so not just a man (and therefore to be ignored) was involved.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 02/09/2017 19:48

But a man? Why would he think women owe him anything? Why doesn't he invent nasty names for different kinds of racist white men? Why focus his criticism on women?

Pure misogyny. And he is no doubt counting on the fact that none of the famous white women will respond to him maliciously on social media.

JigglyTuff · 02/09/2017 19:55

I hate the Becky article. There is nothing equivalent for men. It's making women feel shit for all the racist violence in the world which is, like all violence, largely perpetrated by men.

Pawpainting · 02/09/2017 20:01

scottish none of that "Reba" stuff applies to any non American white woman. So how is it fair to say that all white people and women in particular are part of and complicit in white supremacy?

Why is no one calling out white men in this fashion? It's misogyny pure and simple.

The Root articles is on a US website so is most relevant there but can apply to the UK as well.

Ereshkigal · 02/09/2017 20:09

Absolutely. Women are seen as the easy target. And they can fuck off frankly because I'm sick of it.

OlennasWimple · 02/09/2017 20:18

That Buzzfeed article on types of men is about white men in general, though, not about how white men display their racism as with the Becky article

JigglyTuff · 02/09/2017 20:21

I have seen the Becky article used to bully women. It's a hateful thing that goes along with White Feminists somehow being put in the same box as bro nazis.

Ironically, BLM was started by three women. I wish they'd call this misogyny out

scottishdiem · 02/09/2017 20:23

"That Buzzfeed article on types of men is about white men in general, though, not about how white men display their racism as with the Becky article"

Fair enough. But I am pretty sure that among black authors on a black internet news/opinion site the racism of white men is pretty much a given.

SylviaPoe · 02/09/2017 20:33

The Becky thing is like Patricia Highsmith's Little Tales of Misogyny.

Seachangeshell · 02/09/2017 21:27

I've read that sylvia. How do you think they are alike?

SylviaPoe · 02/09/2017 21:29

The repetition of stereotypes of different women.

QuentinSummers · 02/09/2017 21:53

100% what olenna said about the Becky's. I can recognise the types but I've never seen anything like that about men. Except possibly incels going on about chads:/
