Has anyone seen this news story today? The irony that a mtt transgender goes off on one about race when the exact same thing can be said about men's privilege and society standing on the backs of women...
Sorry, just made me a bit Hmm

But why would they take someone on for cynical diversity PR and then drop them because they're not white friendly enough? Do you think it's because the customer base are an older more conservative demographic than the "woke" youth quencher?

SerfTerf · 02/09/2017 13:28

But all white people are racist, so I don't have a problem with it.

Do you think everybody of every colour is racist Sylvia?

SylviaPoe · 02/09/2017 13:29

Possibly not everyone of every ethnic group, but almost all people, yes.

SerfTerf · 02/09/2017 13:32

I'm trying to find that New York study that found that all ethnicities had subconsciously absorbed "white is better" societal bias but I'm not doing very well on my search terms.

Does anybody know the one I mean?

SerfTerf · 02/09/2017 13:38

Recognising that everybody in the west has been raised in a structurally racist society is important. Encouraging people to realise they may have absorbed those views is also important. Recognising that "other racisms" (not just "white" against "other") also exist is equally valuable.

Condemning or classifying anyone on the basis of skin colour alone is wrong. Pitting ethnic groups against each other is unhelpful and plain dangerous.

SylviaPoe · 02/09/2017 13:42

'Recognising that "other racisms" (not just "white" against "other") also exist is equally valuable.'

Well yes, it is valuable, but not every conversation about white supremacy has to also mention any other form of racist behaviour.

I suspect their diversity quota was being filled by Munroe being trans, not black.

SerfTerf · 02/09/2017 13:46

What do you mean by "white supremacy" sylvia? This isn't about white supremacy.

QueenLaBeefah · 02/09/2017 13:46

I suspect what happened is that L'Oréal held some focus groups and found that your average woman doesn't aspire to look like a transgender woman and that Monroe would negatively impact sales. Low and behold they found a handy excuse to fire her.

FWIW. I agreed with what she said. But as a white woman I also believe that Monroe is also dripping in male privilege and can never understand the experiences of a born woman.

MotherPeresA · 02/09/2017 13:47

Hi somedyke

Interesting question. Can I come back to it?

But, in the meantime, what I actually said was this:

one can not really eschew white privilege nor escape having been socialised in possession of it. (There are some difficult areas here, but I think that's generally true.)

Are you happy to acknowledge that I did not say anything so definite as "male but not white privilege can be given up voluntarily."

Thanks.

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 02/09/2017 13:53

A friend of mine shared this (negatively that is, not supportingly) yesterday.

I think it... warrants discussion...

SylviaPoe · 02/09/2017 13:53

I mean white supremacy in the same sense as patriarchy. I don't mean overt white supremacists like the KKK.

SerfTerf · 02/09/2017 13:58

It's going to cause huge confusion if "white supremacy" gains currency as an alternative term for "white cultural dominance". Smile

SylviaPoe · 02/09/2017 14:02

I am happy to say white cultural dominance, if using white supremacy makes things confusing.

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 02/09/2017 14:06

Albarchy?

SerfTerf · 02/09/2017 14:29

It works, but someone will use it as a baby name 😏

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/09/2017 14:32

I was coming on here to say what Datun said. Also, I hope Munroe acknowledges male privilege in the same way.

Datun · 02/09/2017 15:07

Arf.

PricklyBall · 02/09/2017 15:14

Beyond that five types of Becky article is a painful read, because I think there's a great deal of truth in it.

InigoTaran · 02/09/2017 15:30

That Becky article deserves its own thread!

VestalVirgin · 02/09/2017 16:03

Does anybody know the one I mean?

You mean the study where they showed white and black dolls to children, and even the black children said they liked the white dolls better?

Yeah.

@BeyondLimits: The author of that utterly discredits himself by declaring "white womanhood" to be the epitome of privilege. Confused

moutonfou · 02/09/2017 16:17

I think Bergdorf's statement was unfortunately a little strong and badly worded and calling 'all' white people racist was never going to end well.

What it seems she was trying to say from her clarification is that all white people today have benefitted from the crimes/oppression of other races by our ancestors, and we need to recognise that. I do recognise that. But it doesn't make all white people racists and I think it's that which has caused the greatest resistance to the message she was trying to convey.

SerfTerf · 02/09/2017 16:18

No adults Vestal. I'm wondering when it was and whether it's been repeated.

quencher · 02/09/2017 17:33

It is common sense that black people are racist towards other black people. But it's not known as racism but colourism which stems from white racism. How is that so difficult to understand.

SerfTerf · 02/09/2017 17:34

It's think it's probably difficult to understand because of critical thinking, logic, rationality. Those kinds of things, quencher.
