Fuck sake.
A thread about horrific rape and all you can do is handwring about poor men who might get their feelings hurt because someone on the internet is angry?
Look at yourselves.
Even if every single woman in the world absolutely hated men and said cross things about them.... would it compare to the world we are actually living in?

hiddenmnetter · 26/08/2017 10:36

I agree and disagree missy- I think you need to be less pedantic and see the point that the OP is trying to make rather than picking up on and attacking a few generalisations.

Yes, it's true that generalisations were made, and yes it's true that those inferences cannot logically be made and that they are, as such, incorrect.

However you must address the actual point being made which is that this particular rapist is not simply the product of his own deficiency and nature but is a product of the culture he exists in and the rape and porn he has been subjected to, and the wider social discussion around that.

It is rather poor and low quality casuistry to attack the argument in the way you have. Saying that it's harmful to make these generalisations is an attempt to derail the conversation away from the wider social discussion around porn and misogyny. If you want to have a discussion around the harms of feminism start your own thread.

7 days what kind of world are we living in?

hiddenmnetter · 26/08/2017 10:38

OP and others don't fall for the derailment...

CoinOperatedGurl · 26/08/2017 10:38

So are we blaming porn for his actions?

WomanWithAltitude · 26/08/2017 10:38

One where women are regularly killed for being female, in every country in the world.

NoLoveofMine · 26/08/2017 10:39

hiddenmnetter excellently put and sage advice on the derailing tactics!

7Days very much so.

Women in porn are usually either drug addicted, mentally ill, victims of child sexual abuse, grew up extremely poor, groomed as children or coerced. I don't blame women for participating in their own abuse.

hiddenmnetter · 26/08/2017 10:41

Is that what I said? Don't be reductionist. Almost as bad as the casuistry. There is a complex web of causes and effects involved, and the moral character of the man in question is obviously important but it is also true that our wider social context impacts on us and on how we are, it would be obtuse to disregard this. The discussion here is the impact of porn and it's role in the deranged acts that took place. No-one has yet suggested that it's simply a consequence of looking at porn, but that porn has a role.

WomanWithAltitude · 26/08/2017 10:42

It's not one man. It's constant. This is hardly an isolated case.

Spot on. Ignore the derailer op - why the fuck should men's delicate feelings be prioritised over women's actual lives?

AdalindSchade · 26/08/2017 10:42

It's completely wrong to blame his actions on porn - but it's correct to say that porn is part of the normalising and permission giving process that all sexual abusers go through when moving from desire to action.

CoinOperatedGurl · 26/08/2017 10:43

Wow. So we're either victims, poor or drug addicts. Thanks. Confused

Missymoo100 · 26/08/2017 10:43

Yes the rape was horrific, yes the man involved is evil. I don't disagree at all. However you need to look at the individiual as a deviant rather than the biological sex of being male. If he watched violent pornography it says something about him as a person, not all men do this and lots of men watch porn and don't rape.
It seems the point of this thread is to take one example of a psychopath and use it as confirmation bias to show how men are misogynistic. Using extreme examples to make a point.

Or mentally ill.

Well I thought women were supposed to support each other's choices and not drag them down.

I don't blame porn for this mans actions as many men and women have healthy rape role play as part of their sex lives and don't go on to actually rape people.

NoLoveofMine · 26/08/2017 10:46

Quite WWA. One of so many cases from this year in this country alone, it's constant, violent misogyny harboured by so many.

OP posts:
hiddenmnetter · 26/08/2017 10:46

But the whole point of the discussion is that it's not just the individual- just because everyone who takes heroine doesn't die doesn't mean that heroine doesn't kill. Just because not everyone who watches porn doesn't rape does not mean that porn does not have an impact on the psychosocial conditioning of rapists and the role played in their violent sexual fantasies.

CoinOperatedGurl · 26/08/2017 10:51

Cars kill people but we don't act as if all cars are bad. I'm very pro porn. All types as long as the people performing are consenting.

What that guy did was wrong but to link it with porn is ridiculous. Even if he himself used it as an excuse!

Missymoo100 · 26/08/2017 10:56

Hiddenmnetter
I agree that when exposed to certain types of porn it may trigger offending behaviour- but why do certain men seek out this material in the first place?
I can see how factors beyond the individual themselves may influence offending behaviour, and it will be more than just porn itself there will be multiple other factors.
Blaming porn and men oversimplifies a complex matter

7Days · 26/08/2017 10:57

Ah I see where you are coming from now Coin.
I don't think we will agree on this one.

Missymoo100 · 26/08/2017 11:00

There will be both factors on the level of the individual- i.e. Childhood exposure to abuse, violence and also wider cultural factors that interplay to create this behaviour

CoinOperatedGurl · 26/08/2017 11:06

I like this type of porn. It's just what gets some people off and not indicative of any underlying issues.

AdalindSchade · 26/08/2017 11:06

Well I thought women were supposed to support each other's choices and not drag them down

That's not feminism.

Watching filmed abuse is absolutely part of the process abusers go through in normalising abuse. It's a recognised phenomenon.

AdalindSchade · 26/08/2017 11:07

If denial makes you feel better about yourself then ok

NoLoveofMine · 26/08/2017 11:07

I like the idea of not being at risk of rape and male violence constantly but not sure what it'd be like.
