Why so much trans bashing on MN?

leighdinglady · 02/05/2017 15:26

I just don't get it at all.

Why do I see threads every day on MN which spout hatred and fear about the trans community. What's everyone so scared of??? Literally hundreds of posts of people talking like trans women are somehow a threat to biological women.

For a social platform which is meant to be friendly and approachable, this really stinks.

I liked it when trans said the MN transbashing needs to be exposed (paraphrasing) and and someone pointed out that it IS exposed -you know seeing how it's an open forum an' all.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/05/2017 13:53

If you're going to quote the OED, why not include the primary definition and its examples?

en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/violence

I don't think I've seen many posts on MN which even qualify for the secondary meaning, consisting as they do more of logic than emotion.

'Micro aggressions' being called literal violence is a deliberate tactic though.

The insistence on pronouns and not dead naming only serves to obscure the very explicit language around which the entire ideology is based.

And over which feminists have the biggest problem.

You can't talk about the most fundamental part, which is the inability to actually change sex, if you are constantly being blackmailed into talking as though someone has changed sex.

PirateQueenie · 03/05/2017 13:59

Erron - because we all know the main usage of the word, and that wasn't relevant in this point. My argument was that a word can be used in many ways and to claim "I struggle to understand" what was being said is just a weird thing to say when it is CLEAR what was meant.

"I don't think I've seen many posts on MN which even qualify for the secondary meaning, consisting as they do more of logic than emotion."

  • Not arguing that I've seen violence on here or not. Simply that grammar policing doesn't make an argument anymore valid and belittles the discussion.
OlennasWimple · 03/05/2017 14:05

PirateQueenie - I think I'm supposed to respond to your post saying "oh no, I didn't mean to be petty, sorry if that's what anyone thought"

Because I think that is the response that TRAs are looking for when they accuse people online of "violence" - we are supposed to be a bit taken aback, and retract what we said post haste because most of us are not (physically) violent and wouldn't want to be thought of in that way. So it's a very effective way of getting people to stop posting, particularly when used against women (who are more likely to be bothered by an accusation of violence than men).

No, I wasn't meaning to be petty, and I don't agree that I was being petty. Though I think I have just answered my own question in this post - TRAs throw around terms like "violence" because they have worked out that it is an effective silencing tactic.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/05/2017 14:05

The use of the phrase 'literal violence' is usually as a perfectly formed piece of doublespeak, meaning 'not literally violent'.

(As opposed to literary violence, as in Austen, full of gentlemen violently making love.)

OlennasWimple · 03/05/2017 14:08

And no, the meaning wasn't perfectly CLEAR, or I would not have raised the point (which was as much about the wider use of the term as this thread, though this provided a good example for the discussion)

I read your link. The impression I got was that they are trying to distance themselves from the men who are openly autogynephiles, but still let a few things slip. For instance, a resounding denial that wearing a bra produces an erection, but then saying they can't help but get a boner when they look in the mirror before they go out. And dismissing it with we are men after all. And women do something similar.

I have seen threads where someone's personal struggle with AGP has been minimised, repackaged then remarketed back to them as nothing more than a nice feeling about wanting to be a woman.

Even for the ones who don't get explicitly sexually excited, the yearning fantasy of becoming a woman, the excitement, the tingling, it's still as far removed from womanhood as anything could be.(And I'm not suggesting for a minute it is easy to live with).

However they know it undermines their credibility. Hence the constant rebranding - a fetish became crossdressing, which became cross dreaming which became female embodiment fantasy.

I'm not denying that there are transwomen (usually androphilic) who don't have AGP, but I think the arousal factor is present across the board. It's just ranges by degree.

nauticant · 03/05/2017 14:33

Hmm. Whenever I read the reddit links that are posted in this folder my overriding impression is of mental illness.

I heard if you do that in front of a mirror at midnight, Andrea Dworkin appears and gives you a slap.

Bambambini · 03/05/2017 14:45

I doubt Tansandproud is trans at all. It's easy to make a group look ridiculous, aggressive and crazy by pretending to be one. I have seen many crazy and bizarre statements from transfolk though..,

This article from the US is a piss-take, right?

In what meaningful way is the person in that article a woman?

As for that "eyeliner" article - pfft. What fucking nonsense.

venusinscorpio · 03/05/2017 17:09

Simply that grammar policing doesn't make an argument anymore valid and belittles the discussion.

It's not "grammar policing" it's calling out ridiculous hyperbole used to silence people's (generally women's) concerns.

He has no overlap with me at all. He even opted out of it all for 20 years, and now, opts out of it when it's convenient for his career.

He is the epitome of a gender tourist.

Poppyred85 · 03/05/2017 17:44

Gender tourist- brilliant!

user1487175389 · 03/05/2017 17:47

I'm not sure pulp would approve of me misquoting their work, particularly on this topic, but the longer the great trans fiasco runs, the more I have 'Common People' running through my head.

'cos everybody hates a tourist, especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh'

'rent a flat above a shop, cut your hair and get a job, smoke some fags and play some pool, pretend you never went to school. Still you'll never get it right, cos when you're laying in bed at night, watching roaches climb the wall, if you called your dad he could stop it all...'

ISaySteadyOn · 03/05/2017 17:50

DJGrin and they say feminists have no sense of humour.

Combination of words that make no sense. Flounce. Stab. Stab. Flounce. Drama. More regurgitation of meaningless word combinations. Stab. Flounce. Throws self down onto chaise longue with back of hand held to forehead. Checks mirror. Stab. Flounce.

I'm really confused after reading this twitter convo. I'm too old snd unhip to keep up with all this.

Why so much trans bashing on MN?
M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 03/05/2017 19:28

I think it's JD admitting that the percentage of transwomen sexually attracted to women is vastly in excess of the percentage of women sexually attracted to other women. Funny, that.
