Why so much trans bashing on MN?

leighdinglady · 02/05/2017 15:26

I just don't get it at all.

Why do I see threads every day on MN which spout hatred and fear about the trans community. What's everyone so scared of??? Literally hundreds of posts of people talking like trans women are somehow a threat to biological women.

For a social platform which is meant to be friendly and approachable, this really stinks.

I know. They always speak for themselves. They stand out as a shining testament to women's objections.

nauticant · 03/05/2017 11:37

There needs to be much more Wizard of Oz style pulling the curtain back Datun.

But even so there is such a strong inclination not to (separate from the group and) see. The psychology of this whole business is utterly fascinating as well as being rather disturbing.

Twunk · 03/05/2017 11:59

Well that escalated.

I was happily reading some intelligent debate and KAPOW! trans appeared.

I assumed trans was a performance piece/troll? Someone playing agent provocateur....

Poppyred85 · 03/05/2017 12:04

I agree it's a shame they get delete, particularly the raving migogynistic ones posted by transandproud In this thread. Presumably they were reported. I can understand why ones directed at individuals may cause offence but if the consensus is that the users of the forum would prefer general insult, shouting 'fascists' and 'transphobe' to be left why can't this be done? Any thoughts please MNHQ?

PoochSmooch · 03/05/2017 12:10

Cis Gender Fascists is a new one on me. I like it! It's catchy Grin

Just me, or did transandproud seem just a tiny, tiny bit...pleased...about having found this hotbed of transphobia?

Dramatic flouncing around accusing everyone of oppressing you is very satisfying I expect.

Elendon · 03/05/2017 12:11

I thought trans was anti trans, but you can't tell these days. The vitriol is such that you have to question the motive and the language. If I was trans after reading their posts, I would feel very vulnerable.

PoochSmooch · 03/05/2017 12:12

I agree poppy! I try and stay away from the report button, because I'd far rather that some of the ridiculous misogyny that regularly gets posted here was left to stand, because it so neatly points out the very reason we need to have these discussions.

But I get frustrated sometimes, and pressing the report button is pretty much me saying "Oh, just fuck off, would you?"

Elendon · 03/05/2017 12:14

I'm also still in two minds regarding PirateQueenie who seems to post passive aggressively. and is way too touchy

But perhaps that's just me. Grin

ArcheryAnnie · 03/05/2017 12:34

Could not save it before it was deleted, but I thought transandproud's opener of "your womanhood means nothing" (I paraphrase a bit, but not much) was a pretty good indication of their contempt for women. That's all they needed to post, really.

Isn't it interesting that it's no longer possible to detect whether someone is an extreme but genuine trans activist, and some sort of parody performance artist? Because there isn't any anti-woman position that we can imagine that hasn't already been said perfectly seriously by multiple someones.

BeyondStrongAndStable · 03/05/2017 12:43

Poes law, Annie 😕

CalmItKermitt · 03/05/2017 12:54

I find being called a cis woman highly offensive and I reserve the right to refer to any trans woman who refers to me as cis, as a bloke.

Datun · 03/05/2017 12:58

nauticant

I totally agree. It is rather fascinating in a car crash sort of way.

Like the transwomen on here earlier in the week who called everyone insane over the most polite and well mannered disagreement.

And then started another thread themselves, but were called out on that one too.

I know people get very angry and frustrated. But my personal MO is to remain calm and ask questions (despite privately foaming).

The contrast between rationality and rank narcissism always does the job for me.

Too many S's if you ask me pooch

Try saying it three times really fast

Haha.

"Just me, or did transandproud seem just a tiny, tiny bit...pleased...about having found this hotbed of transphobia?"
Not just you. I was quite partial to his posting style.

Combination of words that make no sense. Flounce. Stab. Stab. Flounce. Drama. More regurgitation of meaningless word combinations. Stab. Flounce. Throws self down onto chaise longue with back of hand held to forehead. Checks mirror. Stab. Flounce.

Datun · 03/05/2017 13:04

WhereYouLeftIt

Really, really making me laugh. It's such a relief.

BeyondStrongAndStable · 03/05/2017 13:07

Does anyone have smelling salts? Grin

WellErrr · 03/05/2017 13:07

I've seen transandproud elsewhere and just assumed it was someone on the wind up.

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/05/2017 13:10

Happy to be of service Grin. But really, there was no telling what he was on after. Actually trans and deluded? Bored insomniac teenager seeing how long he could string it out? Satirist? How to tell, how to tell ...

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/05/2017 13:14

Yep, along those lines Rufus. As seen in old silent movies. Real old-fashioned melodrama.

OlennasWimple · 03/05/2017 13:25

I confess I struggle to understand what TRAs like transandproud mean when they say "violence" (It came up on one of the posts that I think has been deleted - something like "so much hate and violence here!!")

I understood violence to be a physical act, so not something that could be perpetrated over t'internet. But it's become a standard part of the TRA lexicon, so they must be using it in some other way.

OlennasWimple · 03/05/2017 13:35

I found this thread on AGP on Reddit really interesting, though - various posters stating their discomfort with those who get sexually aroused by wearing female clothes, pointing out that this indicates a cross-dressing fetish, not gender dysphoria.

PirateQueenie · 03/05/2017 13:44

Olennas, not that I'm agreeing either way on whether or not there is "hate and violence" on here. But I think grammar pedantacism is probably one of the reasons people get their back up. I don't think it takes a genius to understand what is meant by violence in relation to online. To pick it apart by saying you only understand it to mean physical violence, just comes across as petty. I'm sure you know what was meant.
"Strength of emotion or of a destructive natural force.
‘the violence of her own feelings’"
