Do you think some of the driver for "a woman is anyone who says they are a woman" is to do with bad science teaching in the US?

Just reading this thread on Reddit and loads of the posts are very scientifically naive. I can't decide if posters are being disingenuous or are just very uneducated about basic science.
It got me wondering whether the American thing of teaching creationism as equally valid a theory as evolution has generally undermined science and critical thinking.

OP posts:

I think the comment Implying that women are weak and pathetic creatures - suggesting being fearful of male violence makes women "weak and pathetic" - says a lot about this poster.

OlennasWimple · 07/04/2017 15:09

Back to the OP... I don't think that poor science teaching in American schools can be blamed for the lack of critical thinking around the TRA narrative. My DC's school in the US doesn't touch creationism with a barge pole, other than in RS in 8th grade, and as other pp have said, the complete separation of religion and education in the US school system is rather refreshing in contrast to the "all schools must hold a daily act of collective worship of a broadly Christian nature" approach in England.

I'm off to google, but I suspect that the Bible / Torah / Qu'ran is silent on transgender / transexual individuals, whereas they have a lot to say about gay people - hence the difference in approach of the fundamental religious brigade

How did you know you were a woman?

That would be the genitals being treated differently to my brothers. Then breasts and periods and hormone fluctuations.

No it didn't come naturally, still doesn't. I hate having periods and the way that it is considered I can't do certain things because of my sex.

SSR24479 · 07/04/2017 15:10

Well done, you got it
Male, penis, XY (even if surgically modified). Includes men and trans women.
Female, vulva, XX (even if surgically modified). Includes women and trans men.
Intersex - people with chromosomal or genital abnormalities.
See - it isn't that hard. Well done you

You know men can be born with ovaries, right? And various similar conditions?

IAmAmy · 07/04/2017 15:10

I don't "identify" with the gender I'm assigned. Gender stereotyping is ridiculous and reductive. I'm still female.

Datun · 07/04/2017 15:10

There's nothing to expand on. It came naturally.

I understand that you think you are describing the top three things that made you think you were the wrong sex, but you're really not.

Do you understand how people might be a teensy-weensy bit suspicious of government making sweeping political changes to definition of words and rights of women, based on words like 'it's because of something in my head'?

GahBuggerit · 07/04/2017 15:10

I knew i was a woman when i realised i had a vulva, breasts, periods, got my breasts and vulva groped by boys, was abused by a man because i was a girl, was paid less, expected to stop arguing my point with a man because nice ladies don't do that, get told " you look like shit" when I've no makeup on, the list continues

I wonder how tw 'know' they are a woman?

SSR24479 · 07/04/2017 15:11

Oh, you're claiming you typed the wrong thing are you? And no apology. Well fuck me sideways, if that doesn't convince me you're a natal man nothing will

That's the nicest thing anyone on the internet has ever said to me Blush

Oh christ. The government. Let's not.

^^This.

Damn and bloody blast! Why the fuck have we been the ones bearing the children all this time??

If only I had known this, I would've asked DH when we were TTC, oh, wait, are you one those blokes who has ovaries? Could have saved myself a whole lotta time right there and then.

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/04/2017 15:15

"You know men can be born with ovaries, right? And various similar conditions?"
That would come under the heading of 'mutations'. Every one of us carries mutations.

Datun · 07/04/2017 15:16

Well it's kind of the point. This isn't about some existential argument (in your head). It's about removing the rights of women. Hence 'government'.

SSR24479 · 07/04/2017 15:17

You've all lost the plot. What is someone who is born with a penis and ovaries? Would you say it's defined by what their brain tells them as they age? Shock

UncontrolledImmigrant · 07/04/2017 15:18

Can a person be a transtransperson, like born with XX chromosomes, menstruate, give birth, be identified as female from birth but actually identify themselves as transwomen?

SSR24479 · 07/04/2017 15:18

Trans people don't want to remove the rights of women, we'd be very flattered to be given the right to a separate bathroom.

What in heaven's name has that got to do with transgenderism?

We're not talking about hordes of men with ambiguous genitalia. We are talking about people born with very distinct genitalia.

jellyfrizz · 07/04/2017 15:20

I'd fight for your right to a separate bathroom. Point me the way to your petition.

The Head of Trans Inclusion at Stonewall doesn't agree.

The whole basis of your argument shifts between 'mental illness' 'genitals define' 'internal biology defines' so actually, figuring out what 'makes a man' is relevant.

Datun · 07/04/2017 15:24

Um, not according to Rebecca Stimpson, head of trans-inclusion at Stonewall, representing the views of transgender people. It's the very last thing they want. And are campaigning vehemently against it.

"Rebecca Stinson, head of trans inclusion at Stonewall who was quoted in both articles, penned a piece two years ago titled “I’m a TransWoman And I Don’t Want Gender Neutral Toilets”.

SSR24479 · 07/04/2017 15:24

Because it's fucking stonewall

YY. Me too. Where do I sign?

Datun · 07/04/2017 15:26

Chromosomes determine biology which determine genitals. It's not three separate things.

IAmAmy · 07/04/2017 15:26

I've seen countless trans activists demanding anyone who identifies as a woman be given access to any women's spaces. Even a trans woman who recently opposed this was bombarded with criticism from them.
