Trans media watch are lobbying mnhq

BeyondTheHarpy · 17/11/2016 17:35

I know this has already been mentioned in the PL thread, but I thought it might be an idea to bring it to the attention of mners in a thread of its own.

After the PL debacle, there followed a thread in AIBU about toilet. On which this post appeared...
"I'm with you OP and I'm horrified by the transphobia on Mumsnet. I have done some work with Transmedia Watch who are trying to persuade MNHQ to treat transphobia as they would treat any other hate crime. I don't know what MNHQ have against the trans community or why they don't challenge the widespread belief that trans women are rapists in frocks who want to see fannies."

So, yeah, just letting you know that they are (allegedly) on the case with mnhq.

How come there are 76 genders?

God I'm so confused.

Datun · 21/11/2016 18:12

To be honest, I had this conversation on another thread. I thought there were only two genders - masculine and feminine. And all the 76 were variations on the theme.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/11/2016 18:18

Goodness knows what gender means nowadays (other than to a gramarian). Someone might have a 'feminine' appearance but a 'masculine' career or hobbies.

OlennasWimple · 21/11/2016 18:20

"Correction", to me, would only apply to the small number of intersex individuals. "Change" or "amendment" would seem appropriate to describe transgender individuals.

DD is adopted, so has a new birth certificate - this has her "adoptive name" on it, not her "corrected name"

On the ability to inherit peerages, I thought that this was something that got put into the act during its passage through the Lords? Must do some digging on that

grumpyfeminist · 21/11/2016 18:35

"Correction" also implies there are lots of doctors and midwives needing to undertake refresher training on the basics.

Datun · 21/11/2016 18:44

But that's what I mean. It's just a proportion of masculine or feminine. Or if you can do it, neutral. There is no third gender or fifth or tenth or 76th. It was Prawn (I think) you mentioned a gender (demi-something), which meant you identified as a person who was only interested in relationships within a romantic context (so not one night stands presumably). Which isn't a gender! It's a preference.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/11/2016 19:58

Sorry for jumping in, but there is a debate on transgender equality (ie self identification = GRC) on 1st December, template letter (which IMO needs a bit of work - I changed a fair amount) and way of finding your MP here fairplayforwomen.com/write-mp-house-commons-debate-transgender-equality

Datun · 21/11/2016 22:24

'Its'

I can't believe this. I feel like I'm living in an Orwellian nightmare.

Do you know if there is ANYONE representing women's rights ?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/11/2016 22:35

There's more info about the original enquiry here:

www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/women-and-equalities-committee/inquiries/parliament-2015/transgender-equality/

I fear that transphobics and TERFS views may be ignored.

Datun · 21/11/2016 23:43

If anyone is going to write, re-write the letter in your own words, I think when they receive template letters they don't take them as seriously.

VoodooPeople · 21/11/2016 23:57

Well my MP is a useless twat but I've written to him anyway Grin

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/11/2016 10:53

My MP is generally very good, but in this case I suspect that because he is fluffy and liberal he will find my letter to be transphobic, and will ignore Sad

vesuvia · 22/11/2016 11:41

Datun wrote - "How come there are 76 genders?"

I think it is referring to 76 of the growing number of gender identities.

Gender identity is becoming less about e.g. "feeling like a woman trapped in a man's body" and more about "feeling like a particular type of woman trapped in a particular type of man". I see no reason why the number of allegedly different gender identities could not eventually equal the total number of people.

Some people think that the confusion over the meaning of "gender" has arisen by people's accidentally loose or lazy use of language. Other people think the meaning has been deliberately distorted, conflated and confused by transactivists and other groups. So, now, gender can mean biological sex and/or gender identity and/or gender role and/or gender hierarchy (men above women because men's gender role gives advantages to men). Irrespective of how this situation has arisen, it's a mess because the meaning of gender is misunderstood far too often. For example, transactivists and gender-critical feminists fight about gender. Often, the transactivists assume the gender being argued about is gender identity only, but to gender-critical feminists, gender is often also gender role or gender hierarchy.

In my experience, feminists know much more about gender identity than transactivists know about gender role and gender hierarchy, but transactivists have much more power to control the terms of the conflict between these two groups of people.

"Dear VoodooPeople

Thank you for your email to Mr LocalMP. We will convey your views to him ahead of the forthcoming debate.

Mr LocalMP will attend the debate, subject to his other Parliamentary commitments that day.

Yours sincerely

I thought the terms was transsexual not transgender. Can someone please tell me if they're the same, and if not, then what the difference is.

Females are already losing their spaces. One mtf has successfully sued their LA to be allowed to go to school in the female uniform and to be treated as female within the school.

Datun · 23/11/2016 16:05

name2change4this

Transsexual I believe, was the old school term for someone who had had a sex change. lived their life as a woman, and were few and far between. Transgender, is someone who feels as though their gender does not match their biological sex. Gender being masculine and feminine.

Feminists have been trying to dismantle gender roles for years because they are harmful to women. They would love to see men being able to act feminine and women act masculine as a matter of course, should they wish to.

Late transitioners like Caitlin Jenner, reinforce the gender role of women, being sexual objects with high heels and make up. Indeed she said the hardest part of being a woman was deciding what dress to wear. Not very helpful.

The problem arises when a transwoman (so born male, identifies as female) insists they are actually a woman, due to an internal feeling, despite keeping all their genitalia (and often remaining attracted to women) wanting all the rights accrued to women (such as they are) to be given to them. With full access to women only spaces, scholarships reserved for women, competing in women's sport.

mathanxiety · 23/11/2016 21:24

The important aspect of transsexual vs. transgender is that 'feeling like a woman' is enough. No surgery or hormones are necessary. Clothing is fine and dandy but someone who feels like a woman could equally present as a typical man. The key to transgender is 'identity' and 'feelings'. Those who have always felt that they lived in the right 'gender' are called 'cis' (whether cis-man or cis-woman.) To be 'cis' is to be privileged. If you have your doubts about any of this, you are a transphobe.

That identity and those feelings are well on their way to trumping the rights of girls and women to our own spaces, and to a legal identity and protection under the law as a class and as individuals that is based on biological fact.

Datun · 23/11/2016 21:35

Exactly maths. So any man, any where, any time with form for any kind of crime, including rape and pedophilia, could identify as a woman, for no reason, with no diagnosis, whilst wearing a three piece suit with a foot long beard, can walk into a shower or changing room with an 11-year-old girl.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/11/2016 21:43

And challenging them will be an illegal hate crime...

CaesiumTime · 23/11/2016 21:44

It's not all going to be fine, is it?

So awful.

Kidnapped · 23/11/2016 21:56

But it is all fine, you see.

And if this man were ever to be convicted of something (not convicted of being in a women's changing room, because of course that is all fine and not a crime but shoplifting, say, which is an actual crime) then that man would serve his sentence in a women's prison.

Where he would have more access to vulnerable women that he would on the outside.

And that's also fine.

LumelaMme · 23/11/2016 22:07

DD was saying today that she didn't think she had any problems with the whole trans thing - I think because she has no idea how far it's gone.

So I'm trying her with that tomorrow.

mathanxiety · 23/11/2016 22:36

I suspect a lot of people assume 'transgender' means surgery, hormones, and no more penis. Big mistake.

kua · 23/11/2016 22:53

Indeed Math, when I talk to my friends they assume that all trans individuals have had bottom surgery.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/11/2016 23:11

Yes... I suppose people think 'transgender' is just the polite version of 'transsexual', like the mealy-mouthed misuse of gender when people really do mean sex.
