Call yourself a feminist? Our transgender columnist Juno Dawson's here to see if you really pass the test

And calls women who don't "TERFs". Thanks, Glamour and Jo Elvin, thanks a lot.

in fact the Telegraph stood out among other papers for its reporting of this case....that was local to me. I believe the BBC simply reported this as a 'woman' with no mention of her transgender status..

TheCompanyOfCats · 07/11/2016 12:55

That story was local to me too Brat and I had no idea about the trans angle. All of the reports that I'd read simply referred to 'her' and didn't mention the motivation for attempting to kill. Interesting.

I thought it was an odd, odd case but suddenly it makes sense.

BratFarrarsPony · 07/11/2016 12:56

I think I only knew about it because my housemate was into running.....

WhisperingLoudly · 07/11/2016 13:01

thecountess yes that's my point. Currently trans men are treated as woman because they're not as visible and largely don't make the demands that Transwomen do.

ageingrunner · 07/11/2016 13:01

That poor man who was stabbed Shock obviously a principled man as he refused to travel to SA during apartheid.
There'll be a few more actual women winning fell races from now on though I hope, assuming Lauren is locked up and hopefully banned from competing

WankingMonkey · 07/11/2016 13:03

Juno is a oversensitive manchild who can go suck his own lady stick.

I wish I could say I cannot believe he is blocking on twitter for such petty reasons. But this is what they do isn't it. get their 'opinion' across then attack anyone who dares speak back...unless its endless praise.

THANK you to whoever posted this link (I can't find you, sorry).

gendertrender.wordpress.com/2016/06/17/explosive-footage-of-the-women-speak-out-press-conference-and-qa/#comments

A meeting of an American women's group speaking out over conflicting rights. The comments are fascinating. Apparently this is the first time they are aided by the LGB community, deliberately to signal that the TRAs can no longer co-opt them.

One commentor has gone to the trouble of writing down the entire film because the TRAs get so vocal you can't hear everything. Seeing it written down, makes very sobering reading.

The women are ONLY asking that local businesses get to CHOOSE whether to allow men or not. So everyone has a choice. But they are still shut down.

Datun · 07/11/2016 14:55

This is the transcript, including a very moving piece from a detransitioned FtT.

Can you clarify that? I am being a bit dense no doubt but I am not sure who was aided by the LGB community. I read the link (couldn't bear to watch the film) and I found it hard to follow.

Cheers!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 07/11/2016 15:26

The statistics about the sexual orientation of transwomen is here, ShinyNew. The statistic about how many transwomen have SRS (20%) and how many transmen (5%) was provided by an American trans activist group and can be found here.

msrisotto · 07/11/2016 15:31

Wow Datun that video is mental. And it's funny given how many 'women' there are in the audience, all i can hear are men shouting down women, refusing to hear them speak. Plus ca change.

WhisperingLoudly · 07/11/2016 16:40

Thanks for those links.

The more I read the more logical it gets for me:

Trans woman want to share women's bathrooms because they fear male violence. They've been very specific on that issue. So they must have an issue with some men using the bathrooms. But which ones? Where do they want the cut off (partial pun intended Shock ) to be.

It can't be men who say they identify as women as how does this give them any protection? And no penises is not the solution as it's too narrow. Do what do they actually want??

I suspect figuring out the the answer would make the transactivists implode

BratFarrarsPony · 07/11/2016 16:46

" assuming Lauren is locked up and hopefully banned from competing "

oh she will be locked up alright - in a women's prison no doubt....

As being told she was not a real woman for competition purposes enraged her so much that she drove from west wales to Brum armed with several kitchen knives and attempted to murder the person who had said it.....

are women in her prison going to be safe with her?

Datun · 07/11/2016 16:48

I'll try Miffer. It was said in the comments section something like that historically this group hasn't included LGB - I'm not sure why, I'm not au fait with whether this has any political implications.

Over this particular issue, one member of the panel was a lesbian who was had detransitioned and one was Miriam Ben-Shalom. The comment said that including two lesbians in the panel would aid their stance. I don't know the details as I was speed reading and not familiar with all the people in the group. Although I have heard of Miriam Ben-Shalom.

Presumably it was to present a united front.

Miriam was awesome - taking no prisoners. Someone called her a terf and she ripped back with 'no, I'm a perf !' (penis exclusionary) and maintained she'd had enough of 'swinging dicks' in the military.

msrisotto · 07/11/2016 16:55

I'm afraid that it isn't really about trans women fearing male violence. It is as a pp said above - they want women to participate in their fetish.

Datun · 07/11/2016 16:56

They even illustrated the point quite neatly. In this particular state, I think it's Washington, self identification has either been pushed ahead or is now legal. There is a local spa where the women walk about naked. Two regular men went in and said under the rules they should be allowed in and to be able to strip off. They did it to make a point and although it was a bit confusing in the comments, I believe they asked all the women to sign pledges against the ruling. Which the did immediately.

ArcheryAnnie · 07/11/2016 16:56

Buffy I hear what you say. There's sometimes a measure of letting rip in what we are so often forbidden to say elsewhere, but I do agree that there's also a limit to what is both kind (even to people who are doing us harm) and what is politically expedient. I will keep this in mind when I post again.

Datun · 07/11/2016 17:04

ArcheryAnnie

It was quite interesting in the link that I posted above, that not ONCE did the panel say transwomen aren't women not ONCE did they say transmen aren't men, not once did they accuse any trans person of being predatory. They maintained throughout that EVERYONE should be safe from violence. They stuck with the theme of how can you tell the difference between a transwoman and a predator? And they were still subjected to all the usual insults, prevarication and 'what about us!'

shinynewusername · 07/11/2016 17:15

Thanks Prawn Smile

ageingrunner · 07/11/2016 17:17

Oh dear yes I hadn't considered that Brat 😱

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 07/11/2016 17:28

Great article from the Independent: www.independent.co.uk/voices/juno-dawson-glamour-magazine-terf-gender-identification-feminism-germaine-greer-a7403016.html

ErrolTheDragon · 07/11/2016 17:45

Good...there are some signs that the media is waking up to what's going on. There was a piece in the Times magazine on saturday about trans kids, which while sympathetic to the children they featured did give some balance about the issues with blockers and the criticism which is arising.

YonicProbe · 07/11/2016 17:49

"even though the source of women's oppression often has everything to do with their bodies and their reproductive systems."

Well said, Independent

WhisperingLoudly · 07/11/2016 18:16

missrissotto

I know it's not about safety for them it's about fetish and validation. I'm being slightly facetious, but on the other hand we (as feminists) are getting shouted down at every opportunity why don't we leave them to take this to its logical conclusion:they don't want access for all cocks so which ones are ok?

FloraFox · 07/11/2016 18:29

They don't really care which men get access to women's facilities because they are not afraid of other men. It's just lip service to achieve their goal of validation and forcing women to participate in their fetish. Otherwise, as you say, they would recognise the dangers of allowing anyone access based on self-identification.
