Call yourself a feminist? Our transgender columnist Juno Dawson's here to see if you really pass the test

And calls women who don't "TERFs". Thanks, Glamour and Jo Elvin, thanks a lot.

I don't really buy women's magazines these days, but the last one I probably bought was Glamour (cos it comes in that mini size - or did at the time if it doesn't now) - I guess I'll head back to Marie Claire when the very occasional urge hits me, because they tend to have interesting articles at least.

I would like to confess I have never read The Female Eunuch. I have bought it, and will be rectifying that terrible omission soon (I normally read SF, not anything.. well.. real-life).

How poorly does this bloke come off compared with David Wong mentioned in the Cracked thread! Such a total lack of self-awareness. You'd have hoped that if you were becoming trans you'd have had to go through enough councilling to have a bit of a better grip wouldn't you?

2kids2dogsnosense · 05/11/2016 18:27

Juno apparently is attracted to men. Perhaps he could spend his time telling straight men they should accept his female penis rather than telling women how to do feminism.

Good comment Fox

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 05/11/2016 18:32

Maybe Glamour should team up with MN? They seem to be in the same page...

To be fair, MN is one of the few remaining places on the web that we can actually talk like this. And I'm sure HQ get shit for it.

JedRambosteen · 05/11/2016 18:49

To be fair, MN is one of the few remaining places on the web that we can actually talk like this. And I'm sure HQ get shit for it.

It was a thread on here after Germaine Greer spoke out on Newsnight that brought my attention to trans issues and the conflict with biological women's rights and feminism. I am very grateful to MN for allowing debate on here, especially if they are copping aggro for it.

ArcheryAnnie · 05/11/2016 18:49

Empress I agree. MNHQ generally allow discussion from people on all sides of this debate to stand, and that's rather a precious thing at the moment.

ageingrunner · 05/11/2016 18:50

MNHQ must get an almost constant stream of shit for it.

ageingrunner · 05/11/2016 18:50

Thanks HQ Wine

BratFarrarsPony · 05/11/2016 18:56

Indeed thank you.
I have noticed this debate being shut down with cries of 'transphobia' in a few places now. Even in my children's school.

LEIGH350 · 05/11/2016 19:15

Yes, that is exactly what he is saying. I am almost speechless at that article!

My fave line is: "Sadly, there are probably women reading this right now who are like ... If it's got a penis, it's a bloke."

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 05/11/2016 19:23

"Sadly, there are probably women reading this right now who are like ... If it's got a penis, it's a bloke."

Yes, funny that...

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/11/2016 20:16

'It is a funny sort of a feminism that would place already vulnerable women in danger.'

I was gobsmacked at that line. So Juno is not in favour of women being locked up with penis-bearing rapists then?
No, hang on a minute, they must be, because if we say we're not that makes us TERFs and Juno thinks TERFs are awful.

FlapsTie · 05/11/2016 20:34

I like Dave.

venusinscorpio · 05/11/2016 20:40

The space to discuss this is incredibly valuable, given that it's not permitted on many other mainstream sites and being accused of transphobia would get your post deleted or you banned. That's down to MNHQ.

BratFarrarsPony · 05/11/2016 20:42

it is outrageous that this is not even up for discussion on so many sites and in real life.
A man puts on a dress and lipstick and starts doing campy stuff with his hands and we are not supposed to mention the fact that he is actually a man....just WTAF?

WankingMonkey · 05/11/2016 20:45

Maybe Glamour should team up with MN? They seem to be in the same page...

Thats a bit unfair, MN is one of the few places these issues can actually be discussed. And if the recent influx of mermaids members are to be belied, mermaids are breathing down MNHQs neck also. I imagine they also get a shitload of abuse from transactivists too.

venusinscorpio · 05/11/2016 20:47

More than that, we have to let him take over the direction of women's rights and tell us what issues we're allowed to be concerned about and what we're allowed to be comfortable with.

BratFarrarsPony · 05/11/2016 20:51

you couldnt make it up.
A person with a penis telling us how to be good feminists!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/11/2016 20:56

I have a theory that in 100 years it's going to look as privileged and ridiculous as white Victorians holding forth about the natives, or wealthy Edwardians telling the poor how they ought to live.
This is going to be a prime example of male privilege in the early 21st century and people are going to be open-mouthed that magazines for women actually printed this stuff.

YouHadMeAtCake · 05/11/2016 21:13

bratpony I am clapping your posts. Spot on.

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/11/2016 21:19

My industry takes on fresh grads each year, and occasionally you get one who comes in, has been doing the job 5 minutes and tries to tell all the experienced and qualified people that they're doing it wrong.

That's Juno. They've been "living as a woman" for a year, going by pictures they don't remotely pass and so they will not be experiencing any of the discrimination or sexism that women face on a day to day basis. They may be experiencing discrimination as a result of being trans, but that is not the same as sexist discrimination. Yet they see fit to lecture people who have decades of experience of being women and feminists.

MrsJamin · 05/11/2016 21:24

Oh the irony that James Dawson wrote a book called "Being A Boy" just three years ago. I wonder if Juno will now write the follow up "Being A Woman"?

DeviTheGaelet · 05/11/2016 22:00

statistically very astute post. Exactly what that article was like!

Datun · 05/11/2016 22:08

I wonder just how much aggro MNHQ do get - and whether the nature of it is rather eye opening. I wouldn't mind betting it rather strengthens their resolve to keep the debate uncensored.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 05/11/2016 22:11

The man is a man is a man....is he so simple that he actually needs people to explain to him he is a man? What on earth happened to him that he is SO in denial of his own biology?

Fairyflaps · 05/11/2016 22:58

And in the comments on the article we have a man with a female name browbeating another man for being a man.
"erm, david, is femalehood really a topic you should be shouting your mouth off about being as how you're a man?"
It gets more and more surreal.
