Have you seen the current DFS advert?

All the seamstresses and haberdashers are women and all the carpenters and users of big tools are men.

Why is that then DFS? Eh? Eh?

For shame on you.

OP posts:

Can we not get back to DFS

Why do people want a new sofa for christmas?

PatMullins · 26/10/2016 21:56

What the Jesus fuck does that have to do with DFfuckingS?

almondpudding · 26/10/2016 21:56

So, looking at that HSE data, someone is over twenty times more likely to die due to being pregnant in the UK than through going to work.

And the vast majority of deaths in both situations are preventable.

PatMullins · 26/10/2016 21:57

Spectacular xpost there Rufus Halloween Grin

Good, because honestly my intend is not to offend!! I did get told off for keeping spelling feminist wrong earlier (can't remember by who), but it was a mistake, and I was not doing it to annoy.

I may get a bit passionate, but it comes from a good place, I don't expect to agree with many people here due to the level of passion in both directions, I hope respect can stay the core of the discussion though

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 26/10/2016 21:58

The little Halloween faces are delightful.

Fifa, there's a whole thread about that, why not go and post there instead of derailing yet another thread? There's a dear.

FifaFater · 26/10/2016 22:01

Rufus

I get we disagree, strongly, but thanks for showing at least empathy and treating me like a human. I think thats where my argumentative side takes over, when I get that feeling of oppression again, it triggers a defient side in me.

I DID NOT JUST USE TRIGGERED IN THAT WAY!

noblegiraffe · 26/10/2016 22:03

Just in case anyone hasn't seen the Mitchell and Webb women in adverts sketch (there's a sofa in it)

Xenophile · 26/10/2016 22:04

Thats the show that taught me English, and yes Del falling through the bar drink in hand was amazing!!

I was in my 20's before I learnt that pukka wasn't an actual English word, going round using pukka in every situation possible hahaha

almondpudding · 26/10/2016 22:08

It's interesting that workplace accidents in Europe are so few.

I've looked at the U.S. data, and the U.S. includes driving accidents in their workplace fatalities data. European data excludes it.

And whether at work or not, male drivers are far more likely to be killed at the wheel. So that isn't to do with danger intrinsic to work, that's to do with gendered behaviour when driving.

almond

Does it mean jobs that involve driving?

almondpudding · 26/10/2016 22:16

No, it is any highway incident, not by occupation.

U.S. work fatality rate is 4 per 100,000, compared to 0.46 in the UK.

But then part of that is due to their homicide in the workplace rate.

scallopsrgreat · 26/10/2016 22:19

That's interesting (in an awful kind of way), almond, about death in pregnancy and interesting about the driving accidents in the US. I wonder why they are included - presumably because they occur on the way to or from work or whilst doing their jobs?

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2016 22:20

Theres probably all sorts of factors. When I lived in the US, it appeared to me that workforce in the road were far less well protected for instance.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 26/10/2016 22:22

Well if they are including road accidents then no wonder its higher

I bet ours would increase

scallopsrgreat · 26/10/2016 22:22

x-post. Very strange.

Homicides are included as accidents or as fatalities? What about deaths of prostitutes? (Sorry don't mean to get you to do any more work. Tell me to piss off if you want!).

almondpudding · 26/10/2016 22:29

Here's the PDF of all vehicle related accidents and homicides. They're actual numbers not rates.

I can't find the rates document, but homicide was about ten percent.

So that means you're as likely to be murdered in the U.S. at work as have a fatal accident in the UK at work.

Maternal mortality rate is 10 in UK and 18.5 in USA per 100,000
