Welcome, everybody.

Happy Friday.

Bumping past the troll.

Merry Christmas, belatedly! Xmas Smile

My poor darling SIL did Christmas lunch for 10, plus supper and breakfast, then again for 14 on Boxing Day. She has unlimited funds and a huge kitchen with a conventional oven plus an aga but even so...

Trouble is, she puts it on herself. My DB cooks all the rest of the time. It's only when entertaining that she insists on cooking. And of course she got lots of offers of help, all rejected, rather tersely. She did let me finish the canapés but only that.

This is a very high flying, hugely successfully woman. I guess she sees Christmas catering as some sort of test or goal. It's a shame because although she's very cordial she never really relaxes. My DB tries to help but she won't let him, though he does all the drinks. The adult DC do the veg and their DD iced the cake.

I just wish she would let us do more. She's a love and I wish she didn't push herself so hard.

This is really good news about the family courts here

DeepAndCrispAndEvenTheWind · 30/12/2016 15:07

Yy Xeno

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 30/12/2016 16:01

Very cheering link. Thanks Xenophile.

DeepAndCrispAndEvenTheWind · 01/01/2017 09:03

Happy New Year, pubsters!

Xenophile · 01/01/2017 09:24

Happy New Year!

2017 will hopefully be the year we smash the patriarchy

DeviTheGaelet · 01/01/2017 22:58

Happy new year everyone!

Xenophile · 04/01/2017 13:31

An interesting article from C C-P about why "cis" might be antithetical to feminism. Here

I did at one point have a thread to post interesting articles etc on, but it's disappeared. So I'll just drop them here. I've almost given up with FWR now, it seems to have been populated by the hairy handed and I have neither the patience nor the strength to be bothered to be polite.

PoochSmooch · 04/01/2017 13:43

Don't give up, xeno!

Come and play bingo with me. I've got a 2, 3, 6 and 9, I'm closing in on this week's jackpot!

I like that article, the last sentence is really good: "My gender identity is fuck this oppressive bullshit, and let me be a human fucking being".

M0stlyHet · 04/01/2017 13:50

Gives Xeno a big hug. I'm hoping if I ignore them they'll go away. Probably not, but you never know your luck.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 04/01/2017 17:05

I just post round GFs, Xenophile. If they're only hear to sidetrack us I tend to ignore them. Don't give up, stay with us! Flowers

M0stlyHet · 04/01/2017 18:35

Likewise, Prawn. I try to scroll back to the last sensible post, name-check the poster and pick up on their argument to try to get things back on track from the attempted derail. Of course, I don't always manage this - sometimes I get sucked in.

DeviTheGaelet · 04/01/2017 20:29

It's fucking diabolical at the moment and 8 don't understand why it's not considered trolling by MNHQ.
I think as soon as we start discussing anything interesting they feel threatened and descend. Weird.

DeviTheGaelet · 04/01/2017 20:31

Great link Xenophile.
I'm having issues at the moment with a crime being reported as being committed by a woman, but no photo of said woman and it seems a very "male" crime that's been committed. Hate it that I can't take the news on face value any more and I'm so suspicious, it really does feel like gaslighting Sad

Xenophile · 04/01/2017 21:18

Like this one? Where the fact that the "woman" is actually a bloke is only mentioned near the end of the piece?

Yeah, it's gripping me too.

DeviTheGaelet · 04/01/2017 21:25

Fucking hell. Angry
I'm so fucking sick of it. Because I know it'll get held up as "women do it too" in future.
Grrrr.

DeviTheGaelet · 04/01/2017 21:27

The one I'm thinking of I've done some digging online and I'm pretty sure it's a trans woman.
Why are these people's gender identities so protected? They are committing horrendous crimes, who cares if they are misgendering when they slit a woman's throat?
Aaaagh

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 04/01/2017 23:02

Kayleigh Wood was "assigned male at birth" which, as sex changes are not possible, means he's still male, not female. I wonder if the media would even have mentioned Wood's sex if it hadn't been necessary? Concealing or minimizing the sex of serious offenders is unhelpful in numerous ways. It will skew statistics on violent crime and cases in which males commit typically male crimes - such as torturing a woman and cutting her throat - will be used to claim women are becoming more violent.

M0stlyHet · 05/01/2017 08:19

Actually, given that the Guardian doesn't normally report people's trans status (see for instance the Lauren Jeska case, where it was the investigation of Jeska's testosterone levels which formed the motive for the crime, and they still didn't report that Jeska was trans), I'm surprised they've even gone so far as to report the phrase "assigned male at birth". Normally they don't, as a matter of editorial policy, even when it's one of the material facts of the case.

Xenophile · 05/01/2017 15:21

The astoundingly brave and wonderful Jill Saward has died.

She has done so much good for women victims of rape and DVA.

A toast to absent friends is in order.

M0stlyHet · 05/01/2017 18:36

A toast indeed. I remember the case - she was roughly the same age as me. She was such a brave woman.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 05/01/2017 19:49

They had to report the defendant's trans status, M0stlyhet, because it was relevant to the trial. Apparently one of the sources of conflict was that Kayleigh Woods and the victim had previously agreed to ttc, which wouldn't have made any sense if Woods was female.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 05/01/2017 19:50

I remember Jill Saward and her awe-inspiring courage. Sad to hear she's gone.

M0stlyHet · 05/01/2017 22:03

Well, yes, Prawn, I see that. I'm just surprised the graun didn't do its usual cover-up job. The Guardian has form for not reporting such things even when relevant to the trial - like I said, their coverage of Lauren Jeska did not mention Jeska's being trans, despite the fact that being trans was in fact extremely relevant to the motive. (In that case, Jeska attempted to murder the Sport England official who was investigating Jeska's testosterone levels).
