Benevolent sexism is an interesting one. I'd like to see it discussed properly.
Because - as that thread showed - men get very defensive about having their 'gentlemanly' behaviour questioned. And I understand that. It must be difficult to face the possibility that something you do because you are a decent human being - and that you have always been praised for - is rooted in an erroneous belief. It's uncomfortable.
But the reactions I have had from the men I have talked to about this in real life have been interesting too.
They almost all seem to think I'm complaining about people being nice and that I should be quiet and be grateful.
It's just a lack of deep thinking.
