Benevolent sexism is an interesting one. I'd like to see it discussed properly.

Because - as that thread showed - men get very defensive about having their 'gentlemanly' behaviour questioned. And I understand that. It must be difficult to face the possibility that something you do because you are a decent human being - and that you have always been praised for - is rooted in an erroneous belief. It's uncomfortable.

But the reactions I have had from the men I have talked to about this in real life have been interesting too.

They almost all seem to think I'm complaining about people being nice and that I should be quiet and be grateful.

It's just a lack of deep thinking.

MostlyHet · 26/10/2016 20:18

That's awful when that happens, Buffy. I always feel so sad, both for the person on the tracks and the poor driver.

lifeissweet · 26/10/2016 20:20

Bake off!
Crap.
I'll have to wait and watch on catchup now.

No spoilers!

Felascloak · 26/10/2016 20:20

Yeah I hate it. Makes me feel guilty for being annoyed that my journey is fucked up, when for some poor family somewhere it's the worst day of their lives Sad
I feel bad for the train drivers too, it must be extremely traumatic

FifaFater · 26/10/2016 20:21

No arguing from me, like I said I merely came to find out why threads got deleted, being called names was dissapointing but hey, noone will call that out these days and it's pretty common all round.

I'll keep the debate for those willing, and on appropriate threads.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2016 20:21

WineBuffy

I've never watched Bake Off. DD and DH were watching some DVD talks about future technologies , I wasn't in the mood for them, will have to ask DD if they were interesting.

Felascloak · 26/10/2016 20:23

sweet I think a lot of men just don't get it. They think we make a big deal about nothing. Because it doesn't affect them.
I went to a work Christmas party once where an older female colleague got pissed and grabbed a few mens arses. Discussing it in a burger bar later (it was one of those nights!!) the men were horrified as it had never happened to them before. I'd had various men grab, attempt to snog and proposition me that night so I gave them short shrift. They just don't get it. Because they don't have to.

Oh no, Buffy.

That is awful. The poor train drivers.

Such a tragic thing.

potoroo · 26/10/2016 20:25

Can I join too? I haven't posted on Mumsnet since Dittany was around but recent threads and a long tiring workshop... I could use a drink....

MostlyHet · 26/10/2016 20:26

I miss Dittany - she was a really, really thought provoking poster.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2016 20:26

Pull up a chair. Or is it nice squashy sofas?

That's awful Buffy.

I've never been held up on a train due to that, but I am fairly regularly delayed due to serious crashes on the road I drive down on my commute. It's always both frustrating and sad. Sad

I'm watching Sherlock again. Mr Cumberbatch is a delight.

scallopsrgreat · 26/10/2016 20:42

Oh Xeno. You are so so wrong Grin

scallopsrgreat · 26/10/2016 20:43

Hi potoroo. Welcome back Smile.

Felascloak · 26/10/2016 20:51

Ooh give us an example scallops.
I'm not a fan of Benedict either though.

SpeakNoWords · 26/10/2016 20:59

I'm oddly pleased that Candice and Jane are planning a baking road trip together.

Xenophile · 26/10/2016 21:02

Ah well scallops, all the more of the delicious Mr C for me then.

Yay!

potoroo · 26/10/2016 21:06

Just when I thought I could settle in for the evening, I am now taking son out for a drive so he can calm down and talk (he is 11). This parenting lark is not quite how I imagined. Thank you for the welcome.

scallopsrgreat · 26/10/2016 21:10

Oh heck. Now you're putting me on the spot, Felas. Philip Glennister? Brian Cox (the non-scientist one)?

I was thinking more about men in my personal life. Generally overweight, not conventionally handsome (diplomatic) but a GSOH and a nice smile wouldn't go amiss Smile.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2016 21:10

Flowers for poteroo if she comes back.

I think I prefer Mr BC on the radio - he does quite a bit. Cabin Pressure!!
