These women have no idea what feminism is really about, do they?

I'm not sure why the Indy felt the need to go down this route for IWD. Some of these women sound like MRAs Angry

Why are you referring to my dd though? What's your actual point?

BertrandRussell · 09/03/2016 20:29

"Actually my posts were solely concerned with the fact Berntrand had suggested itllallbefine was making things up, which itllall wasn't."

Eh?

SuburbanRhonda · 09/03/2016 20:43

And on International Day of Forests we should rise up as one and say 'what about the fields, why is there no day for them? I oppose forests (etc)'

This so reminds me of the "Blessed are the Cheesemakers" sketch in Life of Brian Grin

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/03/2016 21:38

"Actually my posts were solely concerned with the fact Berntrand had suggested itllallbefine was making things up, which itllall wasn't."

Eh?

Short summary -itall said these women were being assumed to not understand what feminism meant.

You then came on and said nobody had said anything of the sort. I think you couldn't "fathom" where itllall got that from.

There were several posts saying exactly what *itlllall had pointed out, including the post about someone's 14 year old daughter having more self-awareness.

I really have no interest in these women but your post about itlall imagining things for "some unfathomable reason" was unfair and inaccurate.

As you appear to have forgotten it , I'll jog your memory

"t seems to me that you're basically saying the reason these women don't get feminism is because they don't understand it

Nope. It might seem that way to you for some unfathomable reason of your own, but nobody said anything of the sort

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/03/2016 21:43

Wouldn't it be nice if feminist chat wasn't concerned with defending feminism?

You do such a good job too.

Wouldn't it be nice if it were possible to have an opinion on issues which affect women without having to preface every statement with "as a feminist"

BertrandRussell · 09/03/2016 22:13

"Wouldn't it be nice if it were possible to have an opinion on issues which affect women without having to preface every statement with "as a feminist""

It's more that you feel the need to preface everything you say with "I'm not a feminist but....."

LilacSpunkMonkey · 09/03/2016 22:34

On the Feminism board I think it would be pretty silly for anyone arguing for feminism to preface with 'as a feminist', which is why I think you're being a tad silly there Lass.

PalmerViolet · 09/03/2016 22:43

Hasn't happened in the last week at least. Doubt it's happened on this board for a while, except as parody.

PosieReturningParker · 09/03/2016 23:16

This is my point, precisely. Belonging to the movement should be a given, debate should be more concerned with a shared broad view. Anything else is a distraction from moving forward.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 10/03/2016 18:22

Aren't most female academics feminist and atheist.... double whammy of intellectual markers

Bit of an aside, I am an atheist. I do not claim special intellectual superiority because of it.

On the Feminism board I think it would be pretty silly for anyone arguing for feminism to preface with 'as a feminist', which is why I think you're being a tad silly there Lass

Oh but many , many threads do refer to opinions being feminist or formed by feminism- as if that gives them greater weight. I don't justify , say my opposition to anything which legitimises prostitution by the need to tie it to being a feminist. Any decent human being should feel the same.

PosieReturningParker · 10/03/2016 18:47

In the feminist chat room one expects to "chat" feminism with feminists.

PosieReturningParker · 10/03/2016 18:56

As an aside the atheist comment is a general thing. But you know anything you can disagree with really is worth it.

PalmerViolet · 10/03/2016 19:12

In the feminist chat room one expects to "chat" feminism with feminists.

Wouldn't that be lovely? Unfortunately MN set this up as a part of the forum to discuss feminism, as opposed to a place for feminists to chat, iyswim? The upshot of that is a kind of endless influx of people telling women that they're wrong. And then, for reasons of their own, mummy issues, a desperate need to diminish other women, deep seated mansplainy issues, misogyny etc etc, some of them stick around. It sometimes makes proper discussion of issues difficult, but it's how it has to be. It's ok to ignore merailing though.

PosieReturningParker · 11/03/2016 09:54

I've just no idea why people come here looking for a fight.

turoide · 11/03/2016 10:57

So (according to that link) statistics about rape are intentionally misrepresented by feminist orgs to try and scaremonger women into thinking we live in a rape culture?

Is that true?

turoide · 11/03/2016 10:59

"The upshot of that is a kind of endless influx of people telling women that they're wrong"

On the other hand, being female doesn't automatically make one right. And thinking you are right about everything because one is female and calls themself a feminist is a very bad attitude to have.

PosieReturningParker · 11/03/2016 11:11

Here's another one then .....

PalmerViolet · 11/03/2016 15:25

At least they admitted they're a troll, eh?

PalmerViolet · 11/03/2016 15:29

I've just no idea why people come here looking for a fight.

There are posters on here who have convinced me that there are some people who could be locked in a room on their own and start a fight. It gets really sad and transparent, but quite funny when they post an opinion, then notice that someone they don't like has posted a similar opinion, so start spouting off about the opposite.

Dervel · 11/03/2016 15:36

Is it possible to be pro-women, but not a feminist?

I get that the dictionary definition of feminist boils down to equal rights, and thus few people can really quarrell with that. However there are often quite large political entities that identify as feminist whose objectives one may object to whilst still being broadly speaking pro-woman.

MephistophelesApprentice · 11/03/2016 15:38

Is it possible to be pro-women, but not a feminist?

I strive to be. I share most feminist objectives, but my motivations are very different.

BertrandRussell · 11/03/2016 15:49

" strive to be. I share most feminist objectives, but my motivations are very different."
Gosh. I can't wait to hear what your motivations are.......

MephistophelesApprentice · 11/03/2016 15:52

Continued cultural supremacy through the pursuit of revolutions in military affairs.

In case your wonder was genuine.

BertrandRussell · 11/03/2016 15:55
MephistophelesApprentice · 11/03/2016 16:06

That was largely the reaction of my military science professors. Smile
