These women have no idea what feminism is really about, do they?

I'm not sure why the Indy felt the need to go down this route for IWD. Some of these women sound like MRAs Angry

Sorry, MREs = men's rights extremists, separates them from the men's rights activists who are actually doing good work on things like male homelessness, suicide, depression. MREs on the other hand tend to just whine like fucking babies.

So, not the puerile joke then.

uglyswan · 08/03/2016 17:50

Palmer thank you, that's a useful distinction. I shall remember that.

quencher · 08/03/2016 18:37

I am more annoyed they used the picture of someone who identifies as a feminist to front this bullshit. This makes me wonder whether it's meant as dig at Beyoncé for calling her self a feminist. Wrong for the independent to do that.

I also think that because they could not use men to front those views they went and found women who hold it. Are they trying to say that feminism is not relevant today? We are not even half way there interns of fairness and people are shunning out this tripe

Massively Ridiculous Assholes

PalmerViolet · 08/03/2016 19:29

Posie Grin

There are some men doing some really good things to help deal with the effects of toxic masculinity.

Then, of course, you have the dudebros who just want to harm women and couldn't actually give a shit about the issues that undoubtedly affect men.

I grant you it's not a rights issue, but there is a definite difference between the two.

One lot is whining today about not knowing what's happening on Nov 19th, the other is planning stuff around suicide prevention. Guess which is which Grin

"MREs = men's rights extremists, separates them from the men's rights activists who are actually doing good work on things like male homelessness, suicide, depression."

I am so pleased to hear this! I've never come across a MRA who did anything but blame women for everything and expect feminists to campaign/set up support networks/refuges etc on men's behalf. Glad to hear they've moved on from that.

StealthPolarBear · 08/03/2016 19:42

Yes when oh when will we have international middle-aged middle-class white men's day? This poor group has literally no one fighting their corner.

BertrandRussell · 08/03/2016 19:46

Two answers- 1) Every day and 2) November 19th. Grin

SenecaFalls · 08/03/2016 19:54

OK, why November 19th?

SpeakNoWords · 08/03/2016 19:56

It's international men's day apparently.

thedancingbear · 08/03/2016 19:59

I don't see any difficulty in principle with a piece examining why some women aren't feminists. It doesn't make them bad or stupid people, and I'd've thought feminists would want to engage with these views and try to change them.

But running the article on International Women's Day stinks of seven different kinds of shit.

MrsJamin · 08/03/2016 20:00

Kirsty major commissioned the article. Time to send her a tweet methinks. Join me! @Kirsty_Maj0r

International Men's Day?

I wonder when International White Folk's Month is. Y'know, just to make sure that Black History Month doesn't get above itself or anything. Or Fine And Dandy-O Mental Health Week? Because we can't let all those with Mental Health Issues feel special, can we?

God forbid women have one day a year to celebrate achievement (unless you're the Independent of course). Of course the men must have one too.

StealthPolarBear · 08/03/2016 20:14

Lol at just dandy o day :)

MorrisZapp · 08/03/2016 20:18

The teenager who thinks feminism should be stopped because of divorce. Wtf?? Surely a religious fundamentalist.

SenecaFalls · 08/03/2016 20:28

In the US, we have the entire month as Women's History Month, just as we have for Black History Month. I don't think there's a push yet for Men's History Month or White Folks History Month. I imagine that will change if Trump becomes president.

WomanWithAltitude · 08/03/2016 20:31

Why on earth did the Indy feel the need to give a mouthpiece to these people? They don't even appear to understand what feminism is about.

PalmerViolet · 08/03/2016 20:36

You'd be astounded Seneca.

If you do twitter, have a look at @herring1967 he's spent the last 13 hours or so telling idiots that International Men's Day is Nov 19th. He does it every year. Every. Year.

SenecaFalls · 08/03/2016 21:18

I guess I need to move out of my feminist bubble, Palmer. Smile

tribpot · 08/03/2016 21:39

There appears to be a desire to show 'balance' on International Women's Day - such BBC York's decision to celebrate men on IWD. I hope that we will see the same during some of the upcoming international days, e.g. International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination - presumably 'for balance' we should talk to some apartheid-apologists so they can explain why institutionalised racism is a good thing? On World Poetry Day we should demand equal attention for prose. And on International Day of Forests we should rise up as one and say 'what about the fields, why is there no day for them? I oppose forests (etc)'.

I'm amazed at how (once again) Richard Herring has managed to plough through so many tweets from people say 'huh, there'd be an OUTCRY if there was an international men's day, what equality' (and essentially 'what about the menz'). He says it's worse than last year, and it was pretty bad then. Some who actually appear to have read his response that 19th November is IMD have now got the hump that it doesn't get as much coverage as IWD. It really is a shame men control so few of the methods of mass communication and are unable to get their message out there.

WomanWithAltitude · 08/03/2016 21:47

I didn't know that about BBC York. It's appalling.

All part of the backlash I guess.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 08/03/2016 21:48

If Richard Herring wasn't already married, I'd marry him myself.

Because him already being married is the only thing keeping us apart, obviously.

Posting this everywhere

tribpot · 08/03/2016 21:55

I'm sure you're number one on his list if he ever is single again, Lilac. Here he is elaborating on the 'why is there no IMD whinging on IWD' issue.

tribpot · 08/03/2016 21:56

WomanWithAltitude, I've asked BBC York if they intend to celebrate women on International Men's Day and suggesting this does seem an over-complicated way of providing 'balance'.
