Can we have a general Trans thread?

Sorry for another trans thread and I feel this is a bit of an imposition given I don't post really.

Anyway reading FWR over the past few months has re-radicalised me. I've been reading lots here and wider.

Anyway just now been watching TV and there's been some stuff that's given me the rage but didn't seem to fit in existing threads or it's own thread.

Anyway thing that gave me the rage.
On BBC3 program on transgemder teen's the doctor just said "creating a vagina". Are doctors redefining vagina as pocket rather than a passage? Makes me want to screem.

Also Sarah Ditum being no platformed.

Arrow is a GF.

ShortcutButton · 05/12/2015 20:40

What is a GF?

CultureSucksDownWords · 05/12/2015 20:43

Goady Fucker

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/12/2015 20:45

Thanks Culture that's exactly it.

ShortcutButton · 05/12/2015 20:47

Haha! Thanks Grin

cigarsofthepharaoh · 05/12/2015 23:13

dragons all the feminist and gay activist groups I'm in are full of trans people now - no criticism of gender allowed in case it upsets one of the trans people. They used to be a good way of meeting women to date, but now I'm constantly worried of being accused of transphobia as I have no interest in dating anyone with a penis whatever gender they say they are.

Is the No Platform thing likely to happen or is it just musings on twitter?

Yep another "no platform" supporter.

HermioneWeasley · 06/12/2015 09:53

Cigars for 0.5% of the population, how does trans people manage to get into every group and make it about them?

I saw a tweet by Bernie Saunders along the lines of "if men got pregnant then there would be more choice" and of course there were some TAs saying "men do get pregnant but trans erasure is cool isn't it" and I just want to scream! How does every fucking discussion become about trans rights and trans experience. So th millions of women who get pregnant and give birth every year vs p, what, a handful of TM, we have to pretend that this is somehow a trans rights issue!?

HULK SMASH!

EmpressOfTheVulvaCupcakes · 06/12/2015 10:03

I'd go to no platform too.

Cigars, that's one of the reasons I haven't bothered to get back on the scene Hmm.

Dragonsdaughter · 06/12/2015 11:01

Thanks C - I was involved in women's aid and feminist groups in the 80s so well out of date - can't say I'll bother to become involved again

BriarRainbowshimmer · 06/12/2015 12:13

I hope the No Platform event becomes a real thing!

TheoriginalLEM · 06/12/2015 12:15

Could it not have its own topic?

HermioneWeasley · 06/12/2015 12:18

LEM having threads highlighting the issues in AIBU and chat has brought a lot more women to the discussion and raised awareness of the issues in a way that its own topic just wouldn't get that traffic.

Every time we have the discussion at least MNetter comments that she wasn't aware and is glad to have been informed of the erasure of women, and I think that's really important. And I suspect more lurk and reflect.

DanaBarrett · 07/12/2015 07:54

I'll hold my hand up to mostly lurking! I've only come here through the topics on places like AIBU and the writing of Miranda.im becoming more and more interested in feminism and the surrounding topics in a way I've never considered before.

Brugmansia · 07/12/2015 08:11

Aoife Hart is another gender critical TW writer who I've been reading who is good.

There's also this blog, which is great. The writer tweets as @TransingTrans.

alltouchedout · 07/12/2015 11:51

I'm glad I dealt with the "how can I be a feminist if the other people who identify this way espouse views I find abhorrent" issue such a long time ago, else the transphobic bile of this board might really have put me off.

It's sad though, because I was delighted to see this board existed when I joined mn and I was so looking forward to taking part. Now I just read you in absolute horror and have to force myself not to post furious responses. I am aghast at the prejudice and cruelty on display here.

abbieanders · 07/12/2015 11:53

Well, I'm sure we're all disappointed that you see it like that, but on the bright side, there are plenty of feminist places that don't prioritise women.

HermioneWeasley · 07/12/2015 12:04

all can you give examples of what you think has been "trans phobic bile" please

ArcheryAnnie · 07/12/2015 12:09

I am aghast at the prejudice and cruelty on display here.

Can you provide examples, all?

dontcallmecis · 07/12/2015 12:17

Empress, I love that blog. It's always heartening to see TG people who, essentially, are saying what is often said here. Be who you want, wear what you want, fuck who you want but let's not deny (and confuse) sex/gender.

It seems some trans people are transphobic. I'm sure alltouchedout is disappointed in them, too.

Room101isWhereIUsedToLive · 07/12/2015 12:21

I would so be up for a No Platform event. Will keep an eye out for if it happens!!

VestalVirgin · 07/12/2015 12:22

Well, I'm sure we're all disappointed that you see it like that, but on the bright side, there are plenty of feminist places that don't prioritise women.

Indeed. Almost all feminist places nowadays, actually.
