Because of the genetic lottery, Jeanne - if I had a kid at forty five, I'd probably be able to walk it to school on the first day of primary, but there's a fifty fifty chance I'd be demented and wheelchair-bound by the start of secondary. Having spent my entire adult life watching my mother disintegrating, there's no way I'm risking putting a child through that.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 24/03/2015 17:26

I'm really sorry to hear that, stormy. Thanks for replying, though.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2015 17:27

'How I live my life is my own business.'
That's probably about all that needs saying on the 'baby cutoff issue' really.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 24/03/2015 17:34

Can I come back in the pub please? I've been away a while. I kind of lost the thread of the conversation and then it dropped off TIO and then...

Anyway, if I'm allowed I'm back for a few days before the end of term.

It was a while back, but my Mummies study astrophysics if I'm meant to be going Chatter Chatter. Women next to me normally snigger. In baby groups they often "say sit back down" or "say don't do that".

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 24/03/2015 17:34

Stormy - Sorry to hear that.

StormyBrid · 24/03/2015 18:19

Eh, it is what it is. At least I don't have to worry about pensions!

UptoapointLordCopper · 24/03/2015 18:30

Am slightly Shock at the make-up thread. Don't know why I should be.

Right. Time to get off my bottom and do something. I'm seeing my piano teacher in a couple of days and I haven't practised anything new ...

UptoapointLordCopper · 24/03/2015 19:13

yonic Obama calls them "guys" in that video!

YonicScrewdriver · 24/03/2015 19:17

Aww, does he? I just read the article (at work) and wanted a Lego page turner!'

drspouse · 24/03/2015 19:53

Obama calls them "guys" in that video!

But all children tend to be called "guys" when spoken about collectively in the US, it doesn't seem to be a gendered word any more.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2015 19:58

dr - there's a thread all about 'guys' at the moment. Yes, it's become an ungendered word in common US usage(and perhaps UK youth-speak).

UptoapointLordCopper · 24/03/2015 20:10

Yes it's about that thread. Should have made that clear - sorry dr!

thatstoast · 24/03/2015 21:30

Not sure how I feel about Guys. I'd rather a group of women be addressed as 'guys' than 'girls' or 'ladies'. It is more difficult when addressing a mixed group.

I've just been catching up on Poldark (PHWOAR etc etc) and feeling a bit old because I've realised that Demelza is the woman (almost wrote girl!) who played Jas in Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging.

kickassangel · 25/03/2015 05:05

Gah! Another sleepless night and just argh! Because of teenage kids.

UptoapointLordCopper · 25/03/2015 07:46

Brew kickass. Do I dare ask?

I'm trying to sift my thoughts as to why I don't watch Poldark. I think ultimately it's because of suspicion of greasy hair. > I'm a bit Shock at how shallow that it.

In my language we just address a mixed group as, well "everyone". (Literal translation: big family, usage: everyone.) I can't bring myself to say "guys" or "chaps". I sometimes say "people" - is that bad? But mostly I say "everybody".

GibberingFlapdoodle · 25/03/2015 08:50

Not got much to do with anything else, but it is so nice to hear a man beginning to get it. Just to remind us, namalt! This is from Jon Ronson's webchat if you didn't see it.

" I think it’s no coincidence that most of the people in my book are women. Women tend to be shamed much worse than men. And it’s a much more violent form of shaming. Rape threats and death threats. Men tend to just get “I’m going to get you fired” threats. I can only speculate as to why there’s so much misogyny out there. Maybe it’s because feminism is doing well and some men feel threatened?"

StormyBrid · 25/03/2015 08:53

Oh, excellent! Always liked Jon Ronson, and it's always a bugger when people you like turn out to be massive twats, nice to see the opposite for once!

magimedi · 25/03/2015 09:02

Does anyone else find the thread about not watching the news incredibly depressing? Especially the remark about voting for the same party as their DH as it would be pointless to vote against each other?

A work friend votes Labour and her DH votes Green (think they are in a marginal Tory constituency where tactical voting would dictate they both vote Labour if they don't want a Tory). We were at a work conference at a previous election time and she was saying she'd arranged a postal vote because she didn't trust him to vote by proxy for her.

I think she was joking...

EBearhug · 25/03/2015 12:35

My parents always voted differently from each other.

UptoapointLordCopper · 25/03/2015 13:25

OMG I've just deleted an email offering to publish something I co-authored BECAUSE THEY ADDRESSED ME AS MRS despite this being found on my official work website. This was to stop me replying FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF.

(I think I need help ...)

I have enough publication thank you very much without resorting to half-literate publishing companies.

ChopperGordino · 25/03/2015 13:39

that is very poor lordc. such an easy thing to avoid
