So - Just Read a book called "Code Name Verity".
Set in WWII.
Two main characters - both female. Both strong, compassionate, brilliant, funny, just about everything you could want. One is a spy and one a pilot. They do come across the sexism of the time (particularly the pilot) and it's part of the plot, but not in any hand-wringing, woe is us, kind of way. It's just part of the plot.
I enjoyed reading it so much that not only did I read it in one evening (OK, I stayed up until 2!) but the whole 'oh, they're pioneering womenz' thought didn't even kick in as it's just a good book to read.
It was recommended by one of the teenagers I teach, and would be great for any reasonably mature, avid reader aged around 12-13 up. They need to be able to deal with a bit of death and torture, but there are no horrific drawn out gruesome bits.
I know it's a small triumph, but so good to see that it IS possible to read that kind of book, and that it engages teenagers. In fact, having chatted about it in school, both boys and girls enjoy reading it, just for the story.
