This is the 17th incarnation of the Feminist Pub!

Here be goats, cannons and chat on feminism and related themes. Also snacks. And booze, copious booze.

Welcome!

I did read the guest post too and like it.

an employer who couldn't handle an employee going on parental leave would have to discriminate against anyone who might be likely to become a parent within the next few years. for a man that could be the whole of his working life!

OublietteBravo · 12/02/2015 20:00

Hoppy - I'd want to know that you were capable of being organised and able to prioritise. In addition, I'd like you to give examples of your ability to learn - I'd want to know that in 6 months time you would have picked up our ways of working and be autonomous for any 'standard' tasks. In addition, I'd want to know that you'd tell me about any difficulties/problems/mistakes ASAP to give me the maximum amount of time to find a solution.

I was a kick-ass secretary. I should have skipped science and stuck with it. I'd probably have been earning an absolute packet by now.

ChunkyPickle · 12/02/2015 21:13

Oh goodness yes - that's the difference between a secretary, and a really good secretary you don't want to lose. Initiative and getting stuff done.

No need to apologise Annie I know we all think it's important, conversations move on Grin

AnnieLobeseder · 12/02/2015 21:18

Well, it was less that the conversation moved on, Chunky, and more that your important feminist point got buried in me whining about moving house. Grin

Not feminist at all, but Steve Strange is dead. He's not much older than I am. Fuck.

And now you're all going to ask who Steve Strange was.

EBearhug · 12/02/2015 23:04

I know who Steve Strange was. I was rather shocked when I heard the news. I feel old now.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 12/02/2015 23:47

He was only young. Bleah.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 13/02/2015 07:51

Thanks very much everyone! I'll come up with examples of when I've shown initiative and prioritised a busy/complex work load previously. Doing some more research in to the organisation this weekend as well. I know they must be pretty desperate for someone in post quickly as the CEO is sending out his own recruitment emails!

VampyreQueen · 13/02/2015 12:51

Good luck Hoppy! Grin

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 13/02/2015 16:14

Unrelated to current conversation, but if anyone attempts the MN jaffa recipe, pay particular attention to the bit where it says to line the jelly dish. Otherwise you will say swears in front of the toddler and he will get to eat a huge bowl of jelly that fell to pieces, while you make more jelly.

Dragonlette · 14/02/2015 12:06

It's quiet in here today. It's half term! Hooray!! I will get a chance to have a rest and relax, see my dcs, do a bit of the housework that never happens during term time.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 14/02/2015 12:09

The day is yet young, Dragon, give it a few hours for the hairy handed to work up enough steam to want to abuse us all Grin

AnnieLobeseder · 14/02/2015 12:18

@ hoppy and her jelly

so, anyone else a wee bit fucked off with all of the gender stereotyping going on today?
I'm not particularly fussed about Valentines anyway but apparently what I really need, as a woman, is some sexy pants, roses and to cook DP a steak. Grin

PetulaGordino · 14/02/2015 18:07

I've had a lovely Valentine's day. The fact that it is Valentine's day is a coincidence tbh, but dp is away for a week and I went to a lecture, had coffee with a friend, did some gardening, made an oak bark dye bath, and now I'm looking forward to an evening on my own with a takeaway and The Good Wife on catch-up

UptoapointLordCopper · 14/02/2015 18:17

We had a valentine's card from DS2. Grin

EBearhug · 14/02/2015 21:03

I'm less bothered about the gender stuff today, than I am about the insistence of the world that being in a couple is the only way to be normal, and anyone else is lesser and unworthy.

What colour does oak bark dye go? I'm imagining a dark grey, but I could be totally wrong.

PetulaGordino · 14/02/2015 21:09

Yes the couply stuff is nonsense

The dye bath is a lovely rich reddish brown, but I suspect the final wool colour will be paler brown

kickassangel · 14/02/2015 22:51

We do nothing for valentines, although one year DH came home with a sledgehammer as B&Q had a special offer on.

It is snowy and very windy and due to be horrifically cold (about -30C) tomorrow. We are staying indoors and allowing DD a day if playing games and no nagging to get out and do things.

We will light the fire and watch a movie together later, but more because of the weather than the date.

I hate all the stuff about how you're supposed to behave for valentines.
