This is the 17th incarnation of the Feminist Pub!

Here be goats, cannons and chat on feminism and related themes. Also snacks. And booze, copious booze.

Welcome!

(also i have fewer other jobs competing for my time)

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/03/2015 15:02

Pesky children. Now DS1's feet are now my size and DH puts his socks in my sock drawer. Harrumph. So I went and bought monochromatic spotty socks for me and multi-clashing-colour socks for DS1 but the legacy socks are still causing trouble.

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/03/2015 15:03

How many posts about laundry now? Shock

Shall think of something else.

Grin

No one has expressed an opinion on whether children can be persuaded to eat squid.

Hmm Grin

battered or breadcrumbed then fried? The little sucker bits can be bit unnerving though for everyone kids.

Been meaning to ask apart from the cannon and booze snacks, how/why did the goat end up here?

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 16/03/2015 15:50

To butt patriarchy in the, err, butt, I think.

Does it work to out-psych the children re the squid? Along the "you'll probably like this, you used to love it when you were a baby"? tbh it's beyond my expertise as DD is only 14 months so either she's hungry and will eat anything, or she's not and she uses the food as paint. Sigh.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 16/03/2015 16:09

Squid + children.... place squid on plate in front of children, tell them it's fish, special magic fish, they eat it, then inform them that it's squid and next time they say they don't like it, they will be telling porky pies. Hand in mother of the year award for lying to poor darling children.

tbf, this only worked with DS2, however, given that, when we tried him on a GF/CF diet because we were that desperate for him not to have ASD he tried to eat the backing foam off the carpets, I'm not convinced it was my sneakiness that got him to eat it. He might well merely be a gannet.

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/03/2015 16:20

I'm not deep-frying anything. > They'll eat deep fry calamari rings, but what to do with ordinary squid? Maybe chicken-nugget it. Breadcrumb and shallow fry or oven cook. Hmm. Maybe try that tomorrow. Today we'll just have to eat tinned fish. Hmm

Puffin Can you imagine the look on a 11yo's face if I told him it's "special magic fish"? Grin

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/03/2015 16:26

Going to try grilling squid.

OK I'll stop obsessing about squid now.

AnnieLobeseder · 16/03/2015 16:47

I can't remember why we have a goat either. Confused

PuffinsAreFictitious · 16/03/2015 16:53

Copper depends how well you carry off deeply patronising. Grin

PuffinsAreFictitious · 16/03/2015 16:53

The goat is like a regimental goat, isn't she?

StormyBrid · 16/03/2015 17:22

Can I recommend not lying about what food is? It can backfire badly - I was so pissed off about being lied to that I refused to eat leeks for twenty five years after the Welsh vegetables incident.

ISaySteadyOn · 16/03/2015 17:33

Late to the party, but yay for Annie!
As to domestic appliances, you can take my washing machine over my dead body. DS has just spent a happy 5 minutes throwing all the dirty clothes on the kitchen floor while singing to himself.

On wildly differing notes, first, I have just begun watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer (only on series 1) on Netflix only what 20 years late? And I love it. My inner teenage girl kind of fancies Xander a bit which makes sense given that my teenage self resembled Willow without the hacking skills.

And second, why does it seem that mothers are pedestalised and reviled at the same time?

SoMuchForSubtlety · 16/03/2015 17:49

Technically squid is fish I think? The magic part might be a teeny lie though.

Although there is no such thing as a fish. Conflating all non-mammal non-amphibian things that live in water into one category is like having one word for all land animals. A form of habitat bias, if you like. Not that the fish particularly care about this erosion of their nominative rights I suspect...

I vaguely recall that the goat was a mascot with defensive abilities but I'm not sure.

SoMuchForSubtlety · 16/03/2015 17:51

I rewatched lots of Buffy while I was stuck on the sofa feeding tiny DD while on maternity leave. It's great.

StillLostAtTheStation · 16/03/2015 17:55

And second, why does it seem that mothers are pedestalised and reviled at the same time?

I think that explains my, my mother's and my mother in laws' antipathy to Mother's Day. Appreciate us every day (or don't ) but a bunch of flowers and a card on one day is either unnecessary or too little.

StillLostAtTheStation · 16/03/2015 17:57

Fish should have rights. I'm serious. Factory farmed salmon conditions are appalling. If you enjoy salmon buy wild salmon.

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/03/2015 17:59

I never lie about food to the kids. I sometimes hide things but then always disclose it during the meal so people have a chance to object. Makes life jolly difficult for me. Hmm

Goat is defensive and doubles as recycling centre.

Can't stand mother's day but do it for MIL.

BrightBlowsTheBroom · 16/03/2015 18:06

I had a misplaced apostrophe ' "my mother in law's antipathy" - which has lessened towards me but remains solid in relation to Mothers' Day.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 16/03/2015 18:24

ISSO, your inner teenager might need to tie your inner feminist down during The Pack...

OP posts:
ISaySteadyOn · 16/03/2015 18:40

Is the pack the one with demonic hyenas? If so, my inner feminist sat on my inner teenager and explained what was wrong to her.

Incidentally, wouldn't Demonic Hyenas be a good band name?
