Unbelievable - apparently they've already lost one sponsor...

Just unfriended a load of people posting on Facebook about how he's served his time, the girl was crying wolf (y'know, because we clearly know better than the court who convicted him), he deserves to be allowed to make a living, he was innocent anyway...

Fucking hell. There's an even mix of men and women posting this. It makes me so sad that some people have such a low idea of how women can expect to be treated in this country. And of course, there's no mention of how this "hard-working, talented footballer" encouraged friends, family and fans to hound his poor victim away from her home and her family.

sashh · 08/01/2015 06:02

To those of you on twitter with names I don't recognise Blef is feeling quite down at the moment in her words "feels like we've lost" so if you could just let her know, as you have me on here, that you have seen what she's doing and noticed it.

sashh · 08/01/2015 06:06

Just a thought, don't the parole people have to give permission for him to work?

BIWI · 08/01/2015 06:10

I'm following both of you now

HouseWhereNobodyLives

Surely his position as a footballer put him in a position where he could rape and shouldn't that mean he shouldn't be allowed to?

Anyone up for some activism?

Assuming he is signed and put on the team, he has to inform his parole officer if he stays anywhere overnight, so I'm thinking at away matches would the team be staying in a hotel? Can we contact hotels and ask them not ot have him stay? After all the last time he rented a room it was to rape someome

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 07:22

Sashh, there is nothing that puts him in a position to rape again during the course of the job (match, training etc) so it is unlikely the parole officer can object on that basis. He might be restricted from going to certain things like schools though.

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 07:23

House, I agree.

House, I agree again!

tribpot · 08/01/2015 07:45

I'm assuming he must be courting controversy. Whether or not he should ever be signed to another club, purely from a PR perspective it would make more sense for him to bugger off to play in another country for a while.

This seems like a particularly cynical piece of 'no such thing as bad publicity' for Oldham - loads of headlines + the promise that any commercial losses will be made good by the girlfriend's father.

Oldham do have a women's team. They must be feeling like shit about now. I could not be associated with that brand in their position.

Have I missed something? What does the father do? (apart from being worth millions) and why does he want a rapist/cheater to be with his daughter.
Surely no father is that blind to his litle girl?

Sassh and Blef - I'm following you on twitter too

hilbobaggins · 08/01/2015 11:23

My DP has just texted me to say that he's seen a sky newsflash update indicating that the deal is off. I really, really hope this is true!

ChoochiWoo · 08/01/2015 11:26

has he done his full sentence?

EveDallasRetd · 08/01/2015 11:26

BREAKING NEWS

Oldham deal is off. Reported by Sky and Channel 4.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 08/01/2015 11:28

Sky is chasing confirmation now

weegiemum · 08/01/2015 11:41

My ds is 12-almost-13. Read the article on the front page of the sport section in yesterday's Guardian.

I now have a boy who understands rape, consent, and the ethics of employment.

He's a gentle boy but last night his comment was "he'd better never go near my sisters!"

It's good to see young men understanding these issues, getting why Oldham are wrong, wrong, wrong. Let's hope the outcome of this is that it never happens again.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 08/01/2015 11:44

Let's hope the ultimate outcome is that the FA grows a spine and states clearly that people who have been convicted of serious/violent crimes have no place in professional football.

OnlyLovers · 08/01/2015 11:45

I'm cautiously optimistic that the Sky reports are true.

weegie, your DS sounds lovely. Smile

weegiemum · 08/01/2015 11:46

Jon Snow has just tweeted the Oldham deal is off.

only thankyou! he is very sweet (until I get him to turn off the playstation!)

sashh · 08/01/2015 12:29

It's on the BBC as well www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30727729

Mengog · 08/01/2015 12:39

Apparently board members received death threats.

sashh · 08/01/2015 12:44

I don't agree with death threats.

But part of is thinking, that's a taste of what his victim has gone through more than once.
