Unbelievable - apparently they've already lost one sponsor...

Sadly BIWI, for some women, reporting their rape creates a whole host of other problems, which is why so few do. Eg not being believed, being blamed, being retraumatised by the criminal justice processes and the very low conviction rate. And although it's a criminal offence to identify a rape victim, the twats that identified CE's victim were fined, what, £620 each. Hardly a deterrent.

OddBoots · 07/01/2015 16:56

Well that's one football club that will always be associated with rape then, nice.

AWholeLottaNosy · 07/01/2015 16:59

Well they did employ someone convicted of death by dangerous driving so I guess they've got form.

BIWI · 07/01/2015 17:01

I do know what you're saying, AWholeLotta.

But surely, a high profile case like this HAS to help women realise that they must report rape?

OddBoots · 07/01/2015 17:02

I wonder how the other players will feel about being tainted by him, I'd imagine quite a few of them will want to get out of their as fast as possible.

Is this better or worse than the BBC employing Leslie Grantham, convicted murderer, on Eastenders. Particularly because we were compelled to fund it?

MarjorieMelon · 07/01/2015 17:13

I don't think so MaryShelley, dh was adamant that it was rape and he should not be allowed to sign for another club. I do think as a society we are conditioned to believe that a drunk woman who doesn't say no is there for the taking.

OddBoots · 07/01/2015 17:16

My dh is absolutely with me on this one.

He's appealing because he doesn't seem to think sex without consent is rape, he won't say sorry he won't even ask his 'fans' to back off from her - all that makes him all the more disgraceful, it doesn't let him off anything.

AWholeLottaNosy · 07/01/2015 17:19

The problem for me is that it is just reinforcing the prevalent rape culture ie that the only 'real rape' is a mentally disordered monster jumping out in the street at night and attacking an innocent woman however these stranger rapes are relatively rare, most 'real rapes' are perpetrated by someone known to the victim or facilitated by alcohol, the most common drug used in sexual assault. And it says to young men, it's ok to 'take advantage' of a young, drunk woman your mate is fucking as, she deserves it anyway as she went back to a footballer's hotel room as she's obviously 'up for it'. Sigh.

grimbletart · 07/01/2015 17:27

I don't think it's a male/female divide Mary. It's a decent men and women versus men and women who think it is OK to rape, serve half your sentence, insist against all the evidence you are not guilty and allow your supporters to harass the victim until her life is made hell, divide.

LeBearPolar · 07/01/2015 17:31

Definitely not a male/female divide. DH and DS both agree that he shouldn't be signed. I think it's as grimbletart says, decent men and women versus those men AND women who believe that white male privilege trumps all.

floatyflo · 07/01/2015 17:35

I am so mad about this. Angry

MaryShelley

Message for your husband, no he isn't appealing, he has been denied leave to appeal twice, the CCRC are looking at his case, they look at every case that is sent to them so eg Ian Huntley could send his case to be reviewed.

Only about 2-3% of cases they review result in a conviction being overturned.

Second message for your husband
If when you go to bed tonight you lock your door does that mean a man who has a key copied, breaks in and penetrates your husband OK?

At least on a par I'd say but Auntie has always known best Hmm

That said I think it would be unlikely for someone with such a serious conviction to last anything like the amount of time in the role these days.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 07/01/2015 18:52

Sashh... Thanks for all your tweets today and everyday.

BathtimeFunkster · 07/01/2015 18:57

No, it's not a men vs women thing.

Decent men know this is not OK.

BathtimeFunkster · 07/01/2015 19:00

Maybe they should have let Ian Huntley go back to being a school caretaker while his conviction was under consideration.

School caretakers don't earn much in their career, so they should be given every chance to work.

Koalafications · 07/01/2015 19:06

Is it a female vs male divide on the evans issue?

Absolutley not.

My DH is as disgusted with this case as I am. He can see it is rape and wouldn't want his DC seeing a rapidly be applauded on screen when they score a goal.
