Feminist Pub 14: The Bluestocking, a place for feminist chat and feminists to chat

Welcome!

This is the 14th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, flop onto the chaise lounges with some Wine

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and a variety of drinks and snacks. And stools/bar counters at female friendly heights. And a crèche in the back somewhere

Will link the last pub in the next post!

Morning all! Large mug of builders tea please.

Buffy hope the coffee is going down well. Sounds like you might need it!

Hi Novida

Oh kickass that sounds like complete shit and so exhausting too. Hope you are OK Flowers.

Love the article on Dorothy L Sayers, Jeanne and gender flipping language. Such a useful tool.

V funny link Annie (although a working knowledge of Princess Bride might have made it even funnier Grin)

AWholeLottaNosy it is so depressing at the moment with the rape culture we live in. Was it Greer who said women don't know how much men hate them? It seems to be true at the moment. I keep telling myself it's Backlash because we are making in roads. But sometimes it just highlights how far we've got to go Sad.

And what a great illustration that is, Penguins, of the massively different standards men & women are held to. Women really are required to be adornments.

scallopsrgreat · 16/11/2014 09:13

The Gordon Ramsay/Women's Aid thing is surprising (in a good way). I'd written him off as an arse (and tbh he probably still is!) but it shows people are complex.

Guesswho, be gentle on yourself. You sound like you are splitting yourself into so many pieces already. It's sounds like you are doing quite a lot for your friend already (even if she isn't appreciating it at the moment and is still in the FOG).

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/11/2014 10:53

Buffy Well done for surviving. Grin

Penguins That's quite sad, isn't it? (The one about wearing clothes, I mean.)

Would not have thought that of GR. But good for him. >

Read Flipped through the new Neil Gaiman book The sleeper and the spindle at the bookshop. V. good.

Random musing: do people who know only me and people who know DH and me think of me differently? Some of them do - they don't seem to distinguish between us and assume that we must like the same thing, ie, things DH likes. Maybe it's just that some people are not very clever.

Now off to read the princess bride thing.

YonicScrewdriver · 16/11/2014 10:57

Are we ready for themed hot drinks yet ?

OP posts:
PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 16/11/2014 11:08

Ooh no. I don't do themed coffee. Ever. I am a straight up kind of girl: strong, black, no sugar. No messing, as the man at the coffee cart on town said approvingly this week. Grin

On couples, I think you do get treated as interchangeable/one person. But my experience is that DH gets it as much as I do. Don't know if that is representative.

Back on here for a bit then more assignment work.

Strangely I'm enjoying it Confused

AnnieLobeseder · 16/11/2014 12:00

Morning all. Mine's a tea of considerable enthusiasm and a slice of chocolate cake. Literally, tea's brewing as I type this. T'was my birthday yesterday (hence the cake) and the end of last week was a bit mad, so I haven't been keeping up with the musings of the pub. Still got family here today but I will catch up tomorrow.

FrauHelgaMissMarpleandaChuckle · 16/11/2014 12:02

Happy Birthday Annie !

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 16/11/2014 12:52

Happy Birthday Annie CakeBrew

AnnieLobeseder · 16/11/2014 15:36

Thank you!

FibonacciSeries · 16/11/2014 16:27

I'm cranky because I'm hungry because I've succumbed to peer pressure and am trying to lose weight. Approach with caution.

StormyBrid · 16/11/2014 16:49

I'm cranky because I thought my facebook feed was safe, but someone's just posted in praise of Julien Blanc. Now to figure out how to block people via the app.

trevortrevorslattery · 16/11/2014 17:26

Hello all. Just marking place, but I'll take one of those peppermint things if there are any left, please

kickassangel · 16/11/2014 17:52

I keep coming up with the idea that Gordon Ramsey is actually massively mis-represented. If you actually hear him talk in an interview, he's really quite intelligent and thoughtful. He also comes across as being pretty respectful of his wife, and hands on with the kids. Of course, even interviews are just media representations, not real life. He does swear a lot, and appears not to take idiots kindly, but otherwise I think I might quite like him in RL. I do think he was totally happy with the whole sweary shouty bully-type representation btw, but that he knows it's all just an act for TV.

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/11/2014 18:23

I have no problem with GR swearing. But he was pretty bloody awful to the people when I saw a bit of his India travels. Swearing at children. Angry Pick people your own size.

CrimboHornedSnowflake · 16/11/2014 19:05

Hello, Kim! If I remember correctly, you were instrumental in starting the pub. Great to see you again.

ballsballsballs · 16/11/2014 19:40

Welcome back kim. Flowers

The misogyny is depressing, isn't it? Flowers all round.

Sounds like you explained well kim.

I have a soft spot for PI and the introductory voiceover. 'This is Dave, he likes pepperoni pizza and blow jobs'
