Feminist Pub 14: The Bluestocking, a place for feminist chat and feminists to chat

Welcome!

This is the 14th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, flop onto the chaise lounges with some Wine

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and a variety of drinks and snacks. And stools/bar counters at female friendly heights. And a crèche in the back somewhere

Will link the last pub in the next post!

I'm sorry so many of you are having a shit time. Cake all round.

I shall endeavour to bring some good news. The man who messed up the life of a young teenager I know has been convicted this week. He's still completely fucked up a young person, but at least he's being put in prison for a while so he won't have the opportunity to do it again for a while.

In other news, I've had a performance management observation at work and it was rated outstanding Grin Grin I'm usually rated good with outstanding features, so I'm really pleased that I've finally upgraded myself. Grin

Agreed OB. That's the downside of our system but then I do get cross with folk who don't vote as well!

grimbletart · 21/11/2014 19:39

May I share my feminist moment of the week? Standing at market stall, woman next to me said to smallholder that she had trouble finding the market as her satnav had sent her the wrong way. "Must have been programmed by a woman" said burly male stallholder. Woman says nothing. So quick as a flash I chipped in "No, must have been programmed by a man who wouldn't stop and ask directions". Woman laughed. Stallholder looked daggers at me. I blew him a kiss. T'was good.

mimithemindfull · 21/11/2014 19:45

Grin grimbletart. Good for you dragonlette Cake or Wine to celebrate how great you are ? !

mimithemindfull · 21/11/2014 19:45

PetulaGordino · 21/11/2014 19:45

here is an example of the "some of my best friends are " defence

Bloody hockey. There's a thread somewhere about a poster's DS who got injured in hockey today and I got a black eye once when my friend decided it would be fun to knock the top off some molehills but didn't follow the teacher's advice about not following through like you do with golf!

Hurrah Dragon :)

I had an interesting discussion in the end with DH off the back of the (boring, now, TBH) shirt thing. Disappointingly he's in the camp of "people are trying to change small things because they can't change the big things, but it's pointless and won't work". But interesting too, because I had been worried that he was in the "Everything is equal, I treat women equally therefore all men do and you're imagining things" camp. So will be good I reckon to follow that thread, well, why do you think women get lower pay, etc. Because at the moment he reckons if we fix that (ooh yes please, magic wand anyone?!) then the small issues will come good and in the meantime it's not fair to pull up individuals who don't realise they'e doing anything wrong. As you all probably get, I think it's totally the other way around.

It was soooo nervewracking to put something up on facebook though. I normally stick to my nice safe closed/feminist-heavy groups. I didn't get a massive response (and all female which is slightly disappointing) but ended up having a conversation with a friend who I didn't know was interested in feminism, about how for her her DH is only really starting to get it now they have a daughter.

PetulaGordino · 21/11/2014 19:47

down with disappointments, hockey injuries, unsupportive "friends", and voting in MPs who belong to dodgy parties!

up with successful convictions, outstanding performance reviews, and saying no to casual sexism!

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 21/11/2014 20:06

Random non feminist questions allowed since it's Friday night and a pub?

Do any of you know about scooters and which ones might be good for a child who has outgrown the mini micro one (She's nearly 6, fairly tall). Needs to fold or come apart to stuff under the buggy.

Thanks awfully in advance.

FrauHelgaMissMarpleandaChuckle · 21/11/2014 20:12

I vote for Petula Grin

mimithemindfull · 21/11/2014 20:14

Yy petula I think that all deserves a canon boom !!

PetulaGordino · 21/11/2014 20:25

the cannon boom always makes me think of mary poppins and this

Zazzles007 · 21/11/2014 20:27

"No, must have been programmed by a man who wouldn't stop and ask directions".

Well done grimbletart Grin. There are loads of ways women can assert ourselves which are socially acceptable, especially in real-life where you won't get a rape or death threat. Good for you for saying that - one small, successful action leads to more and more and more, until you have a much bigger thing. I love that his reaction to you says it all Grin

mimithemindfull · 21/11/2014 20:32

Grin thanks petula . I'd forgotten how hilar that is. I think it's better seeing it now than when I was a wee girl!

KateeGee · 21/11/2014 21:26

Mary Poppins was my first feminist idol. Shout out to Winnifred Banks as well.

FibonacciSeries · 21/11/2014 21:46
