Minor male entitlements

It's not just the big things, it's the little things that are in some way more irritating to me.

Just got out of the dentist. It's a small practise and I guess the receptionist is off sick as the reception desk still had shutters down, so they were a little bit late opening up. One woman was sitting in waiting room when I arrived. A man came in a little after me.

The dentist came out and opened up the desk.

Guess who quickly jumped up and got there to be dealt with first?

Gosh the men are a bit whiny today.

Imagine my surprise. Larry on yet another thread about men encroaching on women's boundaries.

"Buggies are used as convenient placed for uninterested mothers to park babies while they compare trendy accessories." Grin Grin Grin. Yep. No male privilege, class privilege, able-bodied privilege there at all. I see you still think that you know better than women.

GarlicSeptimus · 20/09/2014 13:43

I agree about women driving 4X4s. Particularly when they have children in the car - and this is "entitlement", as evidenced by the ferocious yells about Obstructing My Family, if the window happens to be open. Ditto insane mummy drivers on the school run. I'm big enough & ugly enough to know unfairly entitled behaviour when I see it.

Larry's all wrong about the buggies, though. Larry doesn't seem to notice or care that the buggy's actually the child's vehicle, and it's wise to allow space for it - just as you would, say, for a wheelchair. Accidental bumps aren't 'entitled' behaviour, they're accidents ime. Larry seems strangely proud of his buggy-less parenting, which only says to me that Larry didn't have to do any shopping when he took the DC out.

It is not racist to comment on culturally enshrined sexism.

When it comes to road rage and senses of entitlement when driving, men still win that one too.

PuffinsAreFicticious · 20/09/2014 13:48

Lewis's law in action still, I see

I have plenty of grips thanks Pan, but I believe there is a box in the site shop with your name on. Big one. Lots of different sizes and shapes depending on your mood. Glad you're busy though, there might be some sensible posts in your absence.

Sorry posted too soon!

Just because they have this entitlement that the world flows around them, it doesn't change the basic engineering principles of vehicles.

They finally walk around me usually giving me death stares, as not only did I 'challenge' their innate superiority but I also publicly succeeded - due to you know, physics stopping me...

I hate it as all I want to do is get from A to B without anyone even noticing me as I feel vulnerable enough on my scooter.

Yeah. My private theory is that the Insane Mummy Drivers, having stored up every battle they ever lost with a Man In A Van, are enacting role reversal on hapless women in small cars & cyclists Wink

Grin Yes you are probably right Garlic

In larry's world Miscellaneous you have motorised scooter privilege. Tis true.

In fact larry's pram thing is also about women and children not taking up any more than their allotted space (whatever that may be - less than a man obviously) no matter if they need it. I wonder at what stage women are allowed to use prams. Perhaps 3 toddlers like this amazing woman who lived near me. She had one child on her back, one walking and one in the pram. Are they taking up too much room larry if she perhaps bumps into you coz you know controlling three children and a pram isn't distracting at all? Is she being lazy and not interacting with her children?

What about twins? Or triplets? Can a woman have a pram in those circumstances? Pretty please? Cherry on top?

Or may be if they have back or hip problems? Or may be if they just promise not to look at trendy accessories?

A while back I was halted in a cycle lane, by a mobility scooter, doing 5mph. Occupied by a bloke. I remonstrated with him as to why he shouldn't be there. He told me to 'f' off. Nice.
[shakes fist but not sure exactly why, it seems popular atm Grin)

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 20/09/2014 16:39

Was it a cycle only lane?

Rules are here, pop em in your saddlebag:

www.gov.uk/mobility-scooters-and-powered-wheelchairs-rules/overview

PansOtherPeople · 20/09/2014 16:45

yes, it's a 'protected' cycle only lane, passing in front of Man City's Etihad stadium. With a nice wide pavement running along side. Didn;t mind being told to f-off really.

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 20/09/2014 16:47

At 5mph, it sounds like a class 3 scooter that can be on the road.

Just catching up..Buffy, something I missed previously.. please don't label me as a " nice right on" chap? It's like me labeling you as a 'well-mannered lady' ifswim?Smile

and following the 'gregarious' use - ease up! It's beginning to feel like being stalked by a Catholic priest.

I used to use my pram as a weapon so no man dared not give way to me in a narrow space.

Buffy - you've taken time out to expand on what little you know of me. I don;t wish to 'derail' here (though I haven't 'digged' at you, whatever that means.) and fwiw my 'voice' here is no 'louder' than yours, and always much worse received. So I don't take well to your hectoring and attempts at 'bullying'. I know lots about male entitlement, being a male. So from the other side.
And yes it does appear as stalkerish stuff, tbh. I post, you follow up with some wildly inaccurate comment. Seems to be your pattern. So best wishes with that.

PansOtherPeople · 20/09/2014 17:22

Buffy - all of those things you list are accurate. You were being 'cheap' re rape victims and RS, you were being 'boring' ( in 'having a go' - it's like clockwork), and yes, it reads like a little diatribe.
