The old pub now has less than 10 posts to go, so I thought I'd start a new one. The old one can be found here

This is a place for feminist pom pom waving and talking about stuff which might not need a thread for itself.

Fill your boots.

Is that unfair? After all being someone's mother or someone's wife should not disqualify you from being a powerful figure? Are male powerful figure not someone's husband and someone's father? Confused

UptoapointLordCopper · 04/09/2014 09:24

I am going to stick to having a bowl of cereal.

StormyBrid · 04/09/2014 09:31

I'm going to have to go and see that film, aren't I? I remember getting very irritated by the first one, because it's an excellent film, but Hiccup seems determined to view the girl (whose name escapes me) as a prize to be won.

AnnieLobeseder · 04/09/2014 09:42

Valid point, LordCopper. After all, Stoic is defined firstly in his role as Hiccup's father.

I love those films, really. But I'm baffled as to why they made them so vastly different to the books. I think the books are way more awesome. And the women represented far better.

UptoapointLordCopper · 04/09/2014 09:45

The films and the books are brilliant but they do not challenge gender roles.

All the books the DSs read that I really like - the Percy Jackson books, the Artemis Fowl books, Warrior Cats (yes there are series and series of books about cats who are warriors Hmm), Harry Potter - are good, and they all have strong female characters, but they are sidekicks. They exist to help the Hero. They may be more skilful and braver and more clever (and they mostly are), but the Hero is the mover of events and things depend on the decisions of the Hero ... I shall have to persuade them to read the Philip Pullman books. And Anne of Green Gables.

AnnieLobeseder · 04/09/2014 09:47

I think the books challenge them more than the films do. After all, in the film Astrid is the only female warrior. The the books all the women are warriors and compete on an equal footing to the men in battle and as chieftains.

UptoapointLordCopper · 04/09/2014 09:47

Annie I love the books too. Can't wait for the next one. DS1 and I have to fight over that one. (But sometimes I have to read them first to screen for anything scary. Grin Funny old DS1.)

UptoapointLordCopper · 04/09/2014 09:48

Yes - there's a tribe with Big Booby Bertha as chief. Hmm

And Hiccup's mother is a scary warrior.

And we are all terrified of the Witch.

AnnieLobeseder · 04/09/2014 09:48

But yes, the main protagonist is male.

And the books the written by a woman.

Sadly, I think authors, who are just trying to make a living at the end of the day, know that both boys and girls will read books with a male protagonist while, boys may be more reluctant to read a book "about a girl".

AnnieLobeseder · 04/09/2014 09:49

We like to listen to the audiobooks on long car trips. Read by David Tennant - brilliant!

AnnieLobeseder · 04/09/2014 09:51

I seem to be randomly substituting words with inappropriately placed "the" today. Sorry!

WhatWitchcraftIsThis · 04/09/2014 09:53

Is it just me, or is reddit just a haven for twats. Posted an article on fb about the recent photo stealing news and the husband of a friend just went off on one about how all celeb photos are up for grabs and they have no right to privacy, and how reddit users should have every right to violate people's privacy but their own privacy should be protected because those are the rules. And that Anita Sarkeesian is a bitch who deserved all those threats because she stole people's money and is trying to ruin gaming. I was out while it all kicked off, thankfully my husband called him out.

I had a quick glance through reddit, and I don't know if maybe I'm too technalogically inept but a) I don't get how you're meant to use it and b) it's full of giant thundercunts.

this looks like it could be interesting - "No More Heroes" this saturday at 8pm on R4

"The concept of the hero is an incredibly powerful one. But what are heroes, and why are we so drawn to them? Angie Hobbs examines the hero, and asks if we are in danger of devaluing the term.

Stories of heroes resound through the ages, from Achilles in The Iliad, to Lawrence of Arabia. Tales of heroic exploits can be inspiring, but the reality of being a hero can be a lonely one, and many find it difficult to adjust to normal life. Is a hero someone who displays physical or moral courage? What is the relationship between heroism and recklessness? Have we confused heroism and celebrity? And how is the term used and misused by politicians, charities and the media?

To find out what the hero means to us today, Angie speaks to Germaine Greer, Sir Max Hastings, Canon Vernon White, Rory Stewart MP, Colonel Tim Collins and Dame Ellen MacArthur"

You've done a crap job of hiding thread buffy Grin

I have hidden it now as there is only much stupid I can take on as little sleep as I have this week.

PetulaGordino · 04/09/2014 11:08

Some seem quite desperate to ignore any sense so I wouldn't worry about not wasting your time. At the end of a 1000 posts they will still back slap and think they won.

PetulaGordino · 04/09/2014 11:20

buffy, this may not help because i'm a coward and haven't jumped into that thread, but you should know i have so much admiration for your posts on there. and whatwitch too, and any others who have stuck it out through the attempted derail

if you've had enough you shouldn't feel bad about that

TeWiSavesTheDay · 04/09/2014 11:50

I confess I only read the first page, was totally shocked and decided not to post I know I should call them out, but it's hard to do if you aren't feeling sturdy.
