The old pub now has less than 10 posts to go, so I thought I'd start a new one. The old one can be found here

This is a place for feminist pom pom waving and talking about stuff which might not need a thread for itself.

Fill your boots.

Yes, but she rejected traditional role models of nurturing, went off to discover herself, refused the kill-or-be-killed phallo-centric pseudo-theocracy which blinded and threatened the destruction of her society. But yea, she was very Dragonist.

UptoapointLordCopper · 03/09/2014 21:58

Yes she did go against the grain - but it seemed that Stoick himself didn't set that much stock on the traditional role of cooking and running the house either. Do we know that gender roles are like our world in the world of HTTYD? >

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 03/09/2014 22:04

Ah, Comment Is Free. A place I try and avoid. Smile

Downamongtherednecks · 03/09/2014 22:12

Uptoapoint also debate though whether HTTYD2 fails Bechdel Test.

UptoapointLordCopper · 03/09/2014 22:19

Ha! Yes. Very short on female interaction. I enjoyed both the HTTYD films very much. I also enjoy the books. But v. short on female interaction. Author herself said she wrote for her son Hmm but her daughter pointed out that there was no female character so she added Camicazi. But there weren't that many female characters to interact with her... Hmm

Buffy, you are setting your pearls before swine again. Have a calming Wine

On another note, Women's Aid are running a petition about refuges closing, can I be annoying and ask you to sign it? It's here if you would like to, thanks Thanks

I'm currently reading 'Delusions of Gender' by Cordelia Fine - I think I might donate it to DH once I've finished it (his PhD is in neuroscience, and I do occasionally get the whole 'male brain' vs 'female brain' arguments from him).

Shock at no sex discrimination at work - would be awesome if this were the case, but I fear we are still some way off.

Downamongtherednecks · 03/09/2014 22:39

captchaos I have signed it. Anyone noticed how the pub is very like RL tonight with people talking across each other, and generally good humoured.

OublietteBravo · 03/09/2014 22:40

Oh - and petition signed Smile

Argh - Buffy, that thread!?! Of all the @?£#! ??? How can anyone think it's not offensive? I'm going to have to hide it too. It's worse than the golliwog thread.

Signed, Capt.

CaptChaos · 03/09/2014 23:23

Thanks for signing.

Buffy I caught up with the rest of that shite thread, what a pair of absolute cockwombles! Well, a trio of them in the end but....

I tried to sign, but as I suspected, it would not take my US postcode.

Downamongtherednecks · 04/09/2014 00:14

scone I'm US too! just choose a postcode and put it in.

WhatWitchcraftIsThis · 04/09/2014 00:14

Can you just make one up? Random London post code EC1A 1BB

SconeRhymesWithGone · 04/09/2014 00:32

OK, I'll do that! It's a cause close to my heart. It's particularly disheartening to see this happening in the country that gave birth to the domestic violence refuge/shelter movement.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 04/09/2014 00:41

Signed.

Nothing to add other than I've signed the petition too.

BertieBotts · 04/09/2014 07:34

I haven't seen the film, but from the synopsis of the plot it doesn't sound particularly problematic in isolation/context - bearing in mind the first film focused on the son it makes sense that she exsts by having a connection to him, and she does have a defined and independent role with the dragon storyline. But as a pattern of female roles in films it does contribute to the pattern - women exist in relation to men. Mothers, daughters, love interests. Not often sisters, which is another point - a sister could be an equal. Secondly "strong female characters" getting rescued by male characters.

I will sign the WA petition too.

UptoapointLordCopper · 04/09/2014 09:22

I agree Bertie. For a moment Valka existed as a mysterious powerful figure, but then phew, she's someone's mother, someone's wife, after all. Now we know how to place her.
