The old pub now has less than 10 posts to go, so I thought I'd start a new one. The old one can be found here

This is a place for feminist pom pom waving and talking about stuff which might not need a thread for itself.

Fill your boots.

Hello wishes! Smile

I'm donning my bilingual parent hat today and thinking about what to do this term to make life in another language more difficult interesting. Hmm

@ Amazon PIV, how apt, they do like fucking over government's tax laws.

State Sen. Wendy Davis, the one who very nearly succeeded in pulling off a fillibuster over abortion rights is now running for Texas Governor. My Texan sisters are something to do with her campaign. How brilliant would it be if she won?

I love Wendy Davis. I have a huge girl-crush on her.

Flicking through tv last night it appears New Tricks (aka retired male coppers work on historic unsolved cases with help of female cop boss) has replaced 57yo Amanda Redman with 43yo Tamsin Outhwaite.

Okay for all the male cast to be older but not the one female cast member apparently Hmm

Agreed TeWi. Although last night they actually mentioned Radical Feminism. As a thing. Without portraying the character as mad. She did have a sculpture of her vulva on her desk which shut Dennis Waterman's character up (always a good thing). It was about the Greenham Common protests and they were very very careful to emphasise that these were peaceful protests. No violence. No terrorism.

Worth an iPlayer? I'm not keen on Nicholas thingumy so didn't watch.

I do like new tricks but rather miss Amanda Redman and Alun Armstrong. And Ester.

Esther was great Grin. And I miss Amanda Redman.

I was pleasantly surprised TeWi. Feminism was treated as fairly as I've seen it by mainstream TV. But I know what you mean about Nicholas Lyndhurst.

I was just coming on to post that Petula.

He thought it was funny? How fucked up do you have to be to think that rape threats and drowning witches is funny?

Apparently it's all radical feminists fault though, because we make the internet not a nice place for people who post rape threats to be. And Twitter, which took away his right to make rape threats on his several accounts, which made him sad.

Poor sad man.

About halfway down this article are some of the HILARIOUS things he retweeted, as compliments, and jokes.

CCP's Twitter account is gone. Sad

In court, Mr Nunn accused Twitter users who spoke out against his messages of being radical feminists who "hate people", and he also said Twitter bosses had undermined his free speech by shutting down his accounts.

Becaue Twitter owes you an account Hmm

dear god, that article

she is so right - "freedom of speech" is actually freedom of men's speech

I love how they framed his offence as "supplying a woman with ecstasy". Implying she asked him for a pill and he handed it over. Not that he drugged her with it without her knowledge and then raped her. Hmm

The world is so very fucked up.

Yes, I thought was pretty strange. I wasn't sure if that a spectacular fuck up on their part or some kind of legal wording since the rape charge didn't stick and he didn't plead guilty?

Report
PetulaGordino · 02/09/2014 18:50

is that one of those plea-bargain things that you see on us tv shows? (sorry, my knowledge of the us legal system is mostly gleaned from the good wife)

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 02/09/2014 19:01

No, I suspect the evidence was insufficient as to the deliberate spiking (as it was wrt the rape, though the post-court tweet is hopefully in a file somewhere...) and supply was a cast iron charge.

Report
ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 02/09/2014 19:05

I'm guessing the legal definition of supply is something like, "procuring a drug with intent to give, sell or otherwise convey to another party rather than retain for personal use"

The no contest plea is defined as It is also referred to as a plea of no contest. In criminal trials in certain U.S. jurisdictions, it is a plea where the defendant neither admits nor disputes a charge, serving as an alternative to a pleading of guilty or not guilty

Probation and community service and some NA meetings.... that'll teach him not to drug and rape a woman, won't it.... Hmm

Bleugh, one of the deleted tweets was a mansplain about how real rape victims feel.

My dad saw my FB rant on the Rotherham thing and sent me the first email I have ever received from him to say I agree with you but... NAMALT.

Ha ha! I'm actually chalking that up as a success because he's never agreed with me in my life about anything remotely feminist, he just thinks I'm deranged but recognises that others see this as intelligence so it can't all be bad. NAMALT is tacit acceptance of the point of view.

Obviously I'm having to overlook the fact that the point of my rant was that men are fucking freakishly silent on this stuff except to say NAMALT. It's like a little, non-threatening version of the Lewis Law in my email box right now.

I have been deleted from Facebook by one of my BiL. I am, apparently too strident in my views. He's a sexist prick anyway.

Am I allowed a small gloat about having been retweeted by a FAMOUS AUTHOR? Well, Joanne Harris anyway.

Well done Capt.

Met a potential new client yesterday. Their team is all male, their board is all male, their advisors are all male.

Sigh.

For the last few months I've worked with a client that is just over 50% women. That is the first time since I finished school that I've consistently been in a working/studying environment with more women than men in it.

That's one thing I'm possibly going to miss when I Get A Real Job. Our lab, and indeed our whole Institute is pretty much 50/50 men to women (though women are depressingly absent at The Top), and our lab is 80/20 women to men. Life science is wonderfully women-heavy though, but still not considered Women's Work (well except perhaps by Sheldon Cooper). I hope my new job has lots of women too, though I'm planning to branch into publishing so we shall see.
